During this morning’s (Fri. January 10, 2020) ONE Championship: A New Tomorrow event, a very interesting situation took place during a featherweight bout on the preliminary card.

Ma Jia Wen took on Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg in a bout that saw Zoltsetseg drop Wen with a big right hand for a knockout. Referee Olivier Coste stepped in to wave the action off after just 55 seconds, but when Wen came back to, he immediately put Olivier in a heel hook. Check it out here:

Coste was able to get out of the hold and medical officials quickly entered the cage to tend to Wen. The referee didn’t seem to suffer any sort of injury from the heel hook hold as he returned to referee the next fight.

What do you think about Wen attempting to heel hook the referee?

ONE Champion returns this week with their first show of 2020, ONE: A New Tomorrow. The 12-bout card is set to take place on Fri. 10 January, inside the Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand.

The main card will be broadcast on B/R Live starting at 8:30 am EST/5:30 am PST. The prelims begin on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the ONE Super App at 6:30 am (EST)/3:30 am (PST).

Headling the event is a bantamweight Muay Thai title clash between reigning champ Rodtang Jitmuangnon and the man he took the belt from Jonathan Haggerty.

This is a match-up which should get the blood flowing. Rodtang rarely disappoints when he steps inside the ONE cage, and Haggerty is desperate to square the ledger after being outpointed by the Thai last August.

The 22-year-old Englishman has the size and the skill to reclaim his title, but to do so on Rodtang’s home turf will require him to stick to his game-plan and avoid getting suckered into a straight shoot out with the “Iron Man.”

In the co-main event, Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex continues on her quest for a third ONE title when she faces off against India’s Puja Tomar in an atomweight MMA contest. Stamp is 3-0 as an MMA fighter and defeated both Asha Roka and Bi Nguyen in 2019.

The 22-year-old has made it clear that she is targeting Angela Lee’s atomweight strap. While Tomar may not be one of the elite fighters in the division, she is experienced and will be no walk-over for the hometown hero.

Former LFA Interim Lightweight Champion Thanh Le will also be back in action with the Vietnamese-American facing off against Japan’s Ryogo Takahashi. The New Orleans native seems destined for a shot at Marting Nguyen’s ONE featherweight title, and if he can get past Takahashi, the calls for that shot will only grow louder.

Here is the full line up for ONE: A New Tomorrow

The sport of Muay Thai could be in for a banner year in 2020, after ONE Championship announced that they will partner up with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), to help develop the ‘Art of Eight Limbs’ on a global scale.

Founded in 1985, the SAT is a sate enterprise that exists to regulate all sporting associations in Thailand. It is an impressive achievement for ONE to get the tick of approval from the Thai government. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand, and it shows the high degree of trust that the Thai government has in ONE, that it would formally go into partnership with the Singapore-based promotion.

At a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand, the two organizations stated that they would be jointly working together to launch ONE Hero Series, which according to ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, will be “Thailand’s largest professional Muay Thai league.”

The series will be designed as a means to showcase up and coming talent from the local Muay Thai scene. A US $100 000 dollar ONE Super Series contract will be on offer each season for the shows Grand Prix champions.

“We are excited to announce this partnership with ONE Championship, with our goal of raising the profile of the sport of Muay Thai. Muay Thai is steeped in Thai martial arts history,” said Tanukiat Janchum, Director of Professional Sports Development and Boxing Department.

“It is a representation of our people and our culture. The sport deserves to be showcased on a global scale, to millions of people around the world. Through this partnership with ONE, we can leverage both of our resources to bring the action and excitement of authentic Muay Thai to fans across the globe.”

While Muay Thai has strong fanbase around the globe it has never had the same international push or media coverage that sports like boxing and MMA have had. ONE Hero Series, coupled with the ONE Super Series, could be the start of a bright new era for the sort.

ONE is in Thailand this week for the promotion’s first show of the calendar year. ONE: A New Tomorrow is scheduled to take place Fri. 10 January, inside Bangkok’s Impact Arena.

ONE Championship is planning on having a big year in 2020.

The Asian promotion ended 2019 with 42 total events with their last event being the ONE Hero Series in Beijing last month.

And they plan on ramping it up this year as CEO Chatri Sityodtong revealed the promotion’s plans of producing 50 events in 2020:

“BREAKING NEWS: It is FIGHT WEEK in Bangkok for our 1st event of the year! I am thrilled to announce that ONE Championship will produce a record high 50 events in 2020 (vs. our prior record of 42 events in 2019). Stay tuned for some big announcements! LET’S GOOOOO!!! #WeAreONE

ONE’s next event is A New Tomorrow which takes place in Bangkok on January 10. It will be headlined by a flyweight muay thai championship bout between Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Jonathan Haggerty.

Also on the card is an atomweight bout between Stamp Fairtex and Puja Tomar.

As of now, ONE has events scheduled until June. And given Sityodtong’s announcement, we can expect even more announcements to come in the latter half of the year.

What do you think of ONE’s plans on having 50 events in 2020?

Jonathan Haggerty Holds No Fear Of Thailand’s Rodtang Ahead Of Rematch

It was back in August, inside a packed out Mall Of Asia Arena, in Manila Philippines, where the 22-year-old Jonathan Haggerty lost his ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Championship to Thailand’s Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

After dominating the early rounds, the Englishman found himself on the wrong side of the judge’s scorecards as Rodtang came roaring back in the final frames to win via majority decision.

It was a disappointing loss for a fighter mounting his first title defense. Now, after a four-month break from action, Haggerty will look to avenge that defeat when he and Rodtang square off in the main event of ONE: A New Tomorrow.

The bout will take place Friday, 10 January, in Bangkok, Thailand, and after their last tangle, Haggerty is confident he will be the man to hand Rodtang his first loss under the ONE banner.

I don’t think he’s anything special. Yeah, he hit me with some good shots — three good shots that I felt. But technically, I’ve been in there with better people than him. It’s just tweaking things that he won’t expect this time and sharpening things,” Haggerty said in a recent interview with ONE Championship staff writer Jay Furness.

Since arriving at ONE in 2018, Rodtang has racked up six consecutive victories and is regarded as one of the promotions rising stars. The Thai’s ferocious intensity, alongside his willingness to stand and trade, have become his trademark features. However, according to Haggerty, this time around, it will be him not the Thai dictating how the fight unfolds.

I will come less emotional because, in the fight with Rodtang, he wants you to get emotional. He wants you to fight him. He wants you to bring out your war instincts where you’re not comfortable.

I’m going to stick off my jab and stick off my teep. I’m going to frustrate him. Let him come to fight — which he normally does — and hope we catch him with what we’ve been working on.

If Haggerty can recapture the flyweight title on his opponent’s home turf, he will need to play a perfect hand against one of the best Muay Thai fighters in the world, a task easier said than done. Nevertheless the Englishman feels he is up to the challenge and fans will find out if he is as good as his word on 10 January.
