ONE Championship returns to Singapore this week for their penultimate event of 2020. ONE: Edge Of Greatness will take place this Friday, 22 November, inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The ten-bout card will be headlined by a Muay Thai bantamweight world title bout between reigning champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao and challenger Saemapetch Fairtex.

A title bout between two Thai athletes is an uncommon occurrence in the ONE Super Series, and striking fans should be in for a treat. Outside of the main event card ONE: Edge Of Greatness contains plenty of matchups worth paying attention to.

The prelims for ONE: Edge Of Greatness will begin at 5:30 am (EST) on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the ONE Super App. Starting at 7:30 am (EST) the main card will be streamed on B/R Live.

Here is our pick of the key bouts.

Can Saemapetch Stop The Unstoppable?

Since arriving at ONE Championship in 2018, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao has been a one-man wrecking ball carving his way through the ONE Muay Thai bantamweight division. Powerful, quick and with a master’s eye when it comes to working out his opponent’s strategy, the 33 year-old Nong-O is a formidable fighter.

However, as skilled as he is, in his last bout, the four-time Lumpinee Stadium champion found himself tested by a relative novice in the form of young Frenchman Brice Delval. While Nong-O retained his title with a split decision victory over Delva, the manner of his win would have given hope to future challengers that father time may be catching up with the champion.

Saemapetch Fairtex may be the right athlete  to capitalize on this possible newfound gap in Nong-O’s armor. The 25 year-old comes from the much-vaunted Fairtex Gym and captured multiple titles while rising through the ranks of the highly-competitive Thai scene.

Saemapetch has the right physical and technical attributes to defeat Nong-O, but his best chance may be to come on strong in the final frames where his conditioning may prove superior. The bout should prove to be a fantastic matchup, regardless of the outcome.

A Pivotal Lightweight Clash

After a run of two first-round defeats, Mayalasian born Kiwi Ev Ting bounced back with a stunning victory over Japan’s Daichi Abe at ONE: Masters Of Destiny. The 30 year-old now gets a chance to insert himself back into the ONE lightweight title picture if he can claim victory over Singapore’s Amir Khan. The pair will face off in the co-main event of ONE: Edge Of Greatness.

Khan comes into this contest on the back of three straight losses after falling to Eduard Folayang, Ariel Sexton and Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev. The 25 year-old who trains out of Evolve MMA in Singapore has been touted as a possible future champion, and there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on him this week to halt his losing skid.

Khan is an impressive striker when he finds his rhythm, but Ting, who is a well-rounded athlete, has the tools needed to make life very tough for the hometown hero. Whoever wins this bout will find themselves back in the title hunt, so expect to see two athletes putting it all on the line when the doors close this Friday.

A Pair Of US Prospects

US fans will want to keep an eye out for the return of bantamweight Troy Worthen as well as the debut of Sage Northcutt’s sister Colby Northcutt.

Worthen, who is based in Singapore and is Amir Khan’s stablemate at Evolve MMA, made his ONE debut in July at ONE: Masters Of Destiny, where the former college wrestler defeated Rui Chen via second-round TKO. The 26 year-old will now take on the hard-hitting Chinese athlete Chen Lei.The American will need to watch for his opponent’s fast starts, but if he can survive the initial onslaught, he should be good for the win.

Northcutt will step in the ONE circle this Friday as the overwhelming favorite when she takes on Indonesia’s Putri Padm in their flyweight clash. The 26 year-old Northcutt may be an MMA novice,  but she is likely to prove to be too much for Padmi to overcome. The Indonesian has only one bout to her name, a unanimous decision loss back in November of 2018.

The women’s flyweight division is in its infancy in ONE Championship, and it is not hard picturing Northcutt being involved in an inaugural women’s flyweight title bout if she picks up victory this week.

Main Card:

  • Nong-O Gaiyanghadao (C) vs Saemapetch Fairtex (ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship
  • Amir Khan vs Ev Ting (MMA – Lightweight)
  • Troy Worthen vs Chen Lei (MMA – Bantamweight)
  • Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke vs Muhammad Imran ( MMA-Strawweight)
  • Colbey Northcutt vs Putri Padmi (MMA – Flyweight)

  • Alex Silva vs Peng Xue Wen (MMA- Strawweight)
  • Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy vs Charlie Peters ( Muay Thai – Featherweight)
  • Yuta Watanabe vs Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat ( Muay Thai – Flyweight)

  • Brown Pinas vs Liam Nolan ( Muay Thai – Featherweight)

Thailand’s Saemapetch Fairtex is gearing up for the biggest bout of his life this week. The 25 year-old Muay Thai athlete is set to challenge for the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship. Saemapetch’s title shot takes place this Friday in Singapore, at ONE: Edge Of Greatness.

Standing in Saemapetch’s way is reigning champion and fellow Thai Nong-O Gaiyanghadao. The 33-year-old Nong-O is a Muay Thai legend with not one but four Lumpinee Stadium championships to his name.

Nong-O became the division’s inaugural champion after comprehensively defeating China’s Han Zihao in February at ONE: Clash Of Legends. A powerful striker with superb timing, Nong-O has looked seemingly a step ahead of his competition since he arrived at ONE in 2018. However, in his most recent outing against France’s Brice Delval, the Thai showed signs that age might finally be catching up to him as he retained his title only by the slimmest of margins, when he won via split decision.

Saemapetch is aware of Nong-O’s in-ring ability. But after watching Nong-O’s bout with Delval, Saempetch feels confident that he will be leaving Singapore with the belt.

“I now know more of his fighting style and know how to beat him. This is my first ONE Championship Thai vs. Thai bout, and I’m against someone who happens to be my idol. I feel glad and excited at the same time,” Saemapetch said to LowKickMMA.

It was apparent from the very beginning of his ONE career that Saemapetch would eventually be competing for a title. In his debut bout, he defeated the highly-rated Serbian Ognjen Topic, confirming his status as one to watch.

Training out of Thailand’s world-famous Fairtex Gym, Saemapetch is surrounded daily by some of the planet’s most gifted strikers.

“I’m glad to be in Fairtex, it’s also like a family, they treat me very well, I feel I’m so lucky to be here and to get a chance to compete in Muay Thai and represent Fairtex,” Saemapetch said.

Saemapetch, along with stablemate Stamp Fairtex and fellow athletes such as Rodtang Jitmuangnon, represents a generation of Muay Thai fighters who are arriving at ONE when they are nearing or are at, the peak of their powers. The Singapore-based promotion’s ONE Super Series is shaping up as a viable option for Muay Thai fighters looking to earn a living from craft.

“I think there are huge numbers of Muay Thai athletes who want to sign to ONE Championship,” Saemapetch said.

If Saemapetch is right, then ONE Championship fanbase can  look forward to more exciting chases.

ONE Championship returns to China this week with ONE: Age Of Dragons set to place on Friday, 16 November, inside Beijing’s Cadillac Arena. The 11-bout card is made up of six MMA bouts and five ONE Super Series contests.

The card will be headlined by a pair of kickboxing title bouts, throw in the return of Muay Thai legend Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex, and you have a card that should get the tick of approval from fans of world class striking.

The prelims for ONE: Age Of Dragons will begin at 4:00 am (EST) on on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the ONE Super App. Starting at 5:30 am (EST) the main card will be streamed on B/R Live.

Here is a selection of some of the key bouts worth checking out.

Ennahachi Defends His Flyweight Kickboxing Crown

The main event will see Dutch-Moroccan Ilias Ennahachi making the first defense of his ONE Flyweight Kickboxing Championship. Ennahachi captured the strap from Thailand’s Petchdam Petchyindee Academy back in August at ONE: Dreams Of Gold. Ennahachi knocked out the Thai in the third round with a beautifully timed left hook.

Ennahachi is known for his defensive acumen and his ability to fire off his shots as soon as the moment presents itself. The 23 year-old will square off against China’s Wang Wenfeng, who comes into this bout on the back of a seven-fight winning streak.

The 26 year-old has been racked up multiple titles over the past few years after competing in a range of promotions, including the well known Chinese based Kunlun Fight. This will be Wenfeng’s ONE debut, and he will no doubt be looking to send the home crowd happy this Friday.

To make matters even more interesting this will be the third meeting between these two fighters. Ennahachi claimed the honors in their first encounter back in 2014, while Wang won the rematch in 2017. A lot can happen over two years and it will be interesting to see who has developed more a fighter since their last meeting.

The Inaugural Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Champion Will Be Crowned

The co-main event will feature two fighters vying to be crowned the inaugural ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Champion. Morocco’s Tarik Khbabez and Ukraine’s Roman Kryklia will be the two men throwing down for the strap.

Kryklia is regarded as one of the world’s top heavyweight kickboxers, and in February, the 28 year-old claimed the Kunlun Heavyweight Tournament title. Kryklia has 44 wins to his name, with over half of those coming by KO. The Ukrainian has unfinished business with Khbabez after losing to the Moroccan back in 2015.

Khbabez made his ONE debut in 2018 with a TKO victory over fan-favorite Alain Ngalani. Since then, the 27 year-old has been on a tear recording three straight wins in the ONE light heavyweight kickboxing division. The clash between Khbabez and Kryklia looks set to be an explosive one with both men capable of putting the other to sleep in the blink of an eye.

Bouts To Watch Out For

Scattered throughout the rest of the card are several matchups that fans will want to pay attention to. Muay Thai legend Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex will face off against Ukraine’s Sasha Moisa in a catchweight bout. Yodsanklai’s last outing saw him bundled out in the first round of the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix, and the Thai will no doubt relish the opportunity to return to his preferred sport.

Another bout that fans of the atomweight divison will want to follow closely is the debut of  Indian Commonwealth Games Wrestling Gold Medalist Ritu Phogat. She is set to take South Korea’s Nam Hee Kim. Phogat trains out of Evolve MMA in Singapore and is being touted as a future title contender. This week’s bout should show fans how far along she is in her development as a mixed martial artist.

Main Card:

  • Ilias Ennahachi (C) vs Wang Wenfeng (ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship)
  • Tarik Khbabez vs Roman Kryklia (ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Championship)

The Ben Askren-Demetrious Johnson was still worth the investment for both sides according to ONE Championship vice president Rich Franklin.

The pair were traded in MMA’s first-ever trade last year with Askren going to the UFC while Johnson went to ONE Championship. “Mighty Mouse” has so far registered three wins and recently became the ONE flyweight grand prix champion.

Askren, on the other hand, is 1-2 with the promotion and most recently was submitted by Demian Maia at UFC Singapore last month. It led many to question why the UFC even trade a pound-for-pound great in Johnson for Askren.

UFC president Dana White, however, would later defend the trade and Franklin is the latest to do so:

“It was a pretty straight forward trade from the business side,” Franklin told MMA Junkie. “Just kind of flip-flopped from one organization to the next, and so nothing tricky about it. And I’ll say this: Askren goes to the UFC, he’s competing against some of the top level guys obviously with Masvidal and what not, and then DJ comes over to ONE Championship and is competing against some of the top guys.

“People will make a comment like that based on athlete’s performance, but the reality, what you have to ask yourself: What kind of return on investment did the organization get on the trade?”

Of course, Johnson never resonated with the American audience and struggled to sell pay-per-views. Askren, meanwhile, has been a very popular fighter since his arrival due to his trash talking which has stirred up interests in his fight.

Those factors lead Franklin to believe both promotions got their worth:

“DJ, for us, who maybe didn’t get the respect that he deserved in another organization, is going to do really well over here in ONE Championship,” Franklin explained. “There are many fans on this side of the planet that gravitate towards the smaller athletes, and he puts on exciting matches. There’s no doubt about that, so for us, regardless if he’s winning or losing, that’s not as important as he’s a big draw.

“And likewise for Ben Askren moving to the UFC. Regardless of whether he’s winning or losing, he’s a big draw because people are going to be curious. Even though he lost his last match to Demian Maia, when they find him for another match, people are still going to be interested in seeing how he performs. To see if, ‘Oh, maybe he had a rough start out of the gates or whatever,’ so they’re still getting a return on investment in that respect, and I think it was probably smart for both organizations because the UFC wasn’t getting a return on investment in Demetrious.”

Do you agree with Franklin?

Former UFC star Sage Northcutt’s ONE Championship debut this past May didn’t go according to plan. Northcutt was knocked out in the first round of his fight with Cosmo Alexandre in devastating fashion. He only lasted 29 seconds before being finished.

In the process, Northcutt suffered eight fractures in his face that required a lengthy surgery to repair. Shortly after the loss, his former boss, UFC president Dana White, suggested that Northcutt retire from MMA.

“I would really like to see Sage Northcutt retire,” White said. “I hope he does. Good looking, charismatic kid, smart. He was an engineer, taking college to be an engineer. He’s got a lot going on in his life.

“This isn’t the sport for him. I don’t want to sound like I’m sh*tting all over the guy because I really like the kid a lot, but this isn’t the sport for him. I would love to see him retire before he seriously gets hurt.”

Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, Northcutt offered his response to White’s comments, saying he doesn’t understand the logic behind them.

“For him to say something like that, after that injury, I don’t understand the exact logic of why he would say something like that,” Northcutt said. “Before, he was wishing me to do great in everything I happened to do in the future, and (to) say something like that is totally different.

“I’m sure he’s had a few fighters from the UFC go to ONE Championship and I’m sure he—I’m not sure what exactly he wants to see from those fighters, but I’m sure he would like them to be fighting for his league. Me fighting for ONE Championship is great, and I think I’m gonna accomplish great things.”

What do you think about Northcutt’s reaction to White suggesting he retire?
