ONE Championship touches down in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam this week for the promotions inaugural event in the South East Asian country.

ONE: Immortal Triumph will take place on Friday, 6 September inside the Phú Th? Indoor Stadium. It will be an all Super Series event due to MMA being outlawed in Vietnam.

The main card starts at 9:30 am EST/6:30 am PST. The prelims will begin at 6:00 am EST/3:00 am PST.

The 14-bout card will be made up of ten Muay Thai and four kickboxing bouts. Headlining the evening will be a title clash for the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship. Reigning champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao will square off against Algeria’s Brice Delval, who will be making his promotional debut.

In the co-main event, Thailand’s Saemapetch Fairtex will take on French-Algerian Adam Noi.

Nong-O Looks To Continue His ONE Winning Streak

Thailand’s Nong-O Gaiyanghadao is a Muay Thai legend. In the course of his career, the 32 year old has captured four Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Championships across multiple weight classes. He has over 300 professional bouts to his name and holds a winning record of 258-54-1.

After taking a break from the sport in 2015 to become a trainer at Evolve MMA in Singapore, Nong-O returned to the competitive arena in 2018. An elite striker Nong-O has steamed rolled over recent opposition. It is hard picturing how Delval, a relative novice compared to the champion, will be able to find a pathway to victory.

The 20-year old Delval trains out the highly respected Mahmoudi Gym in Paris. He is likely to come to ring prepared and with a do-die attitude. However, it is unlikely to be enough against an opponent as experienced as Nong-O.

Bi Nguyen Returns Home

America’s Bi Nguyen will compete in the country of her birth for the first time at ONE: Immortal Triumph. The ONE atomweight is set to take on India’s Puja Tomar in her first Muay Thai bout under the ONE banner. Nguyen is coming off a disappointing split decision loss to Myanmar’s Bozhena Antoniyar at ONE: Masters Of Destiny, and will want to make a quick return to the winner’s circle.

The 29 year old comes from a Muay Thai background, so the switch to stand-up will not overly concern her. In Tomar, she will be facing a fighter bursting with confidence after her recent MMA victory over Indonesia’s Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol.

A national Wushu champion Tomar may not have the same Muay Thai credentials as Nguyen, but she is still a decorated stand-up fighter. The Indian athlete has also made it known that she feels Nguyen lacks heart and will aim to capitalize on this perceived weakness.

However, the emotional impact of being back in Vietnam should inspire Nguyen, but it could also place extra pressure on her shoulders. We will find out on Friday how she copes with the extra spotlight.

A Heavy-Hitting Russian Arrives

WMC World Champion Beybulat Isaev will make his ONE debut this week against Brazil’s Anderson Silva. The pair will lock horns in a light heavyweight kickboxing bout that should end with someone hitting the floor, especially since they will be wearing 4-ounce MMA gloves.

Isaev is an exciting fighter to watch and one who moves well for a big man and at 25 years of age he is still coming into his athletic prime. A clash with the veteran Silva should provide him with the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents.

Main Card

  • Nong-O Gaiyanghadao (C) vs Brice Delval ( ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship)
  • Saemapetch Fairtex vs Adam Noi (ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai)
  • Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat vs Azwan Che (ONE Flyweight Muay Thai)
  • Beybulat Isaev vs Anderson Silva (ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing)

When Brice “The Truck” Delval enters the ring on Friday, 6 September for his ONE Championship debut he is hoping to leave with more than just memories The Algerian is set to challenge Nong-O Gaiyanghadao for the Thai’s ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title, and would love nothing more than to exit the ring with gold strapped around his waist.

The pair’s clash will be the main event of ONE: Immortal Triumph  taking place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It will be the first ONE event held in the Southeast Asian country.

For me, it’s an honor and a privilege to be able to compete for a ONE Championship title,” Delval said.

“I will give everything I have to please those who have put their trust in me.”

The  S1 Muay Thai World Champion was born on the island of Réunion, an overseas department and region of France, and became hooked on the “ “Art of 8 limbs” as a child.

“At a young age, my parents introduced me to martial arts. They did so because they were looking for a way to channel my energy because I was hyperactive. I decided to become a professional athlete during my first bout in Thailand at the age of 12. It was a dream I have now realized,” Delval commented.

After moving to Paris, France, Delval began training at the respected Mahmoudi Gym in the Parisian suburb of Bonneuil-sur-Marne. The gym is home to several world-class athletes including former ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Title challenger Elias Mahmoudi.

Since turning professional , the 20-year-old has traveled the world competing against the best competition he could find. Deval has proved he can compete at an elite level. However, as skillful as his previous opponents were Nong-O, with over 300 professional bouts to his name, falls into a class  all of his own.

The formidable Thai is one of the most decorated Muay Thai athletes currently competing. The 32-year-old has a host of achievements to his name including four Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Championships across multiple weight classes. Since making his promotional debut at ONE: Heroes Of Honor in April 2018, Nong-O has looked almost unbeatable. The Evolve MMA trained athlete is not simply a striking powerhouse,he is also a highly- technical athlete and finding holes in his game has been a challenge that has confounded his recent opposition.

Nevertheless, Delval refuses to be intimidated by Nong-O’s impressive resume and believes that the tactics he and his team have devised will be enough to overcome one of the sports most fearsome competitors.

“I never study my opponents it’s the work of my coaches,” Delval explained.

“He [Nong-O] is a very good athlete,  in the ONE Super Series, he has beaten the likes Fabio Pinca and Mehdi Zatout who are also top athletes. We have put a strategy in place that will surprise him on 6 September.

“I implement the game plan that my coaches put in place. Generally, it is different with each bout that I compete in because my opponents all have different strong and weak points,” Delval added.

Delval may still be in the early stages of his career, but the maturity and focus he is exhibiting in the leadup to his bout with Nong-O indicate he is ready for the challenge awaiting him.

ONE Championship is going all-in for its upcoming 100th show. ONE: Century is set to take place on Sunday, October 13 in Tokyo, Japan. The Singapore-based promotion announced this week that it will hold two separate cards to celebrate their milestone.

The first card takes place in the morning and will be broadcast live in the US on TNT at 11 pm ET. The second card, taking place in the evening will be broadcast globally.

The anticipated rematch between ONE Atomweight Champion Angela Lee and ONE Strawweight Champion Xiong Jing Nan will headline the morning card. Lee failed to dethrone Xiong when she challenged the Chinese fighter for her strawweight crown back in March. This time around it will be Xiong who will have to adjust to a new weight class as she attempts to capture Lee’s atomweight title.

Eddie Alvarez and Demetrious Johnson will also be in action. The pair will compete in the finals of the ONE Lightweight and Flyweight Grand Prix tournaments, respectively.

The main event of the evening card sees ONE Light Heavyweight Champion defending his belt against Brandon Vera. Vera, the ONE Heavyweight Champion, will be dropping down a weight class for the first time since signing with ONE.

In the first of the evening’s two co-main events, ONE Bantamweight Champion Bibiano Fernandes takes on Team Lakay’s Kevin Belingon for the third time in a row. Belingon defeated Fernandes last November to claim the bantamweight crown. However, he then lost it to the Brazilian after being disqualified when the pair meet in a rematch in March. This fight should put their rivalry to bed. It is also likely to be one of the most anticipated bouts of the day.

The second co-main event sees Rodtang Jitmuangnon mounting the first defense of his ONE Flyweight Muay Thai crown. The Thai recently claimed the title at ONE: Dawn Of Heroes and will face Brazil’s Walter Goncalves.

Fans of Japanese MMA are also in for a treat with the respective Shooto and Pancrase strawweight, bantamweight, lightweight and welterweight champions meeting each other in the cage for the first time in history.

Here Are Some of the Most Unique Monikers in the MMA World

Like a picture-perfect knockout or a super-slick submission, a cool moniker is as much a part of the game as any of the other many elements that mixed martial arts has to offer.

Throughout the years, countless mixed martial arts stars and champions have made a name for themselves and a lot of them have reached a certain level of stardom wherein they can easily be identified just by their nicknames, so to speak.

When you hear “The Natural”, that’s Randy Couture. “Iceman”? Definitely Chuck Liddell. “The Spider”? Nobody but Anderson Silva.

Others have even adopted their monikers as their primary names like “Rampage” Jackson or “Shogun” Rua.

The nickname is often an extension of a fighter’s personality or characteristics inside the field of combat, and while there are a lot of quite common nicknames, others are undoubtedly very unique.

Here are some of the most uncommon monikers in the world of mixed martial arts.

Rich “Ace” Franklin

No, former Middleweight World Champion and Hall of Famer Rich Franklin wasn’t a card aficionado before becoming a mixed martial arts icon. In fact, Franklin was a school teacher who eventually self-trained himself to become one of the best middleweight competitors ever. As for the nickname “Ace”, well it comes from his uncanny resemblance to comedian Jim Carrey, whose most iconic role is that of wacky animal detective Ace Ventura. You can also say that since he was a former school teacher, he “aced” becoming a champion, but, yeah, the Jim Carrey one sounds like a better story. Franklin is now a Vice President for Asian martial arts powerhouse ONE Championship.

Paul “Semtex” Daley

English welterweight Paul Daley is known for his explosive knockout power, which has earned him the nickname of “Semtex.” For those that don’t know, Semtex is a plastic explosive that is said to be more powerful than C4. With 30 of his 41 career victories coming via knockout, it can be said that Daley has “Semtex” in his fists…get it?

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang

The usual nickname is that of a deadly weapon or a ferocious animal or the odd job kind. Then, there are those who go the “natural disaster” route, and arguably the most unique one of that bunch is the one that belongs to Filipino lightweight and two-time ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang. The Philippine hero goes by the nickname “Landslide” which is an homage to his hometown of Baguio City, a mountainous area in the Philippines where landslides are a common occurrence. Folayang also said that the nickname is partly thanks to how he ran through the competition early in his career…much like a landslide.

Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson

Thai-American women’s mixed martial arts star Michelle Waterson is the owner of one of the most unique monikers in the game today with “The Karate Hottie.” Beginning her martial arts journey at the age of 10 when she began to take up Karate, the very beautiful Waterson became a black belt in American Freestyle Karate and eventually made her way into the mixed martial arts industry, first as a ring girl, and then transitioned into becoming a professional mixed martial artist without any amateur experience. Fun fact: Waterson’s daughter Araya goes by the nickname “The Karate Cutie”.

Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko

Retired Belarusian Vladimir Matyushenko was given the nickname “the Janitor” by American wrestling legend Dave Schulz because he looked like he had been cleaning the mats. Matyushenko also went on to defeat members of the American National Wrestling Team in a meet in Siberia. He would go on to have a decent mixed martial arts career which included a run as the IFL Light Heavyweight World Champion.

Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen

Vietnamese-Australian star Martin Nguyen may have the most unique custom nickname in mixed martial arts history. It doesn’t get any more uncommon than “The Situ-Asian”, now does it? According to the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion and the promotion’s first-ever champ-champ, the nickname came from when he finally developed abs, and his teammates started calling him “The Situation” in reference to the popular reality TV star with the same nickname on the show “Jersey Shore”. Because he didn’t want that as a nickname, it was tweaked a bit to honor his Asian heritage, and the rest was history.

Miesha “Cupcake” Tate

MMA nicknames are usually ones that invoke intimidation or fear, but Miesha Tate’s is the exact opposite unless of course, you’re someone who’s watching your weight. Formerly known as “Takedown”, Tate adopted the nickname “Cupcake” during the latter part of her career because of her love for baking. “Cupcake” would go on to become a multiple-time world champion in her career, before calling it quits. Now she works as a Vice President for ONE Championship.

Stamp Fairtex showed that she has a legitimate shot at becoming a three-sport champion.

Taking on undefeated Indian fighter Asha Roka at ONE: Dreams of Gold on Friday night, the former Muay Thai and kickboxing champion displayed her striking skills as many expected.

However, Fairtex also displayed her skills on the ground and didn’t seem uncomfortable at all. In the end, she was able to get the rear-naked choke submission locked in to get a third-round victory. She now moves to 2-0.

You can watch the finish below:

Fairtex notably made her mixed martial arts (MMA) debut in July last year when she defeated Rashi Shinde via head kick KO. It will be interesting to see who she is paired up with next as she has been impressive so far into her MMA career.

What did you think about Fairtex’s dominant victory over Roka?
