Singapore’s Angela “Unstoppable” Lee (9-0) is looking to claim another piece of mixed martial art’s history on Friday, 9 November at ONE: HEART OF THE LION, inside Singapore’s Indoor Stadium.

Lee, who is the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion will take on China’s “ The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan (13-1) for Xiong‘s ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title. If the undefeated Lee can defeat the heavy hitting Xiong, she will become the first woman competing for a major mixed martial arts promotion to earn the label of two-division champ.

Lee’s legion of fans has grown accustomed to seeing her defy the odds and rewrite the record books. In 2016, at ONE: ASCENT TO POWER the then 19-year-old Lee defeated Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi to become the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion.

Lee’s victory over Yamaguchi made her the youngest athlete from a global mixed martial arts promotion to be crowned a World Champion. After three successful defenses of her ONE Atomweight World Title, Lee, who is always on the lookout for her next challenge, indicated that she was eyeing up a potential matchup with the ONE Strawweight World Champion.

“Since she became World Champion, I’ve been keeping an eye on her and watching her closely during her matches and seeing how things play out,” Lee said in the lead up to Xiong’s successful title defense against Brazilian Samara Santos at September’s ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON.

Soon after Xiong’s defeat of Santos the bout between her and Lee was made official, sending fans and media into a frenzy at the thought of two of ONE’s most dominant athletes sharing the cage. However, Lee will go into this bout fully aware that she will face the most difficult assignment of her professional career to-date.

The scale of the task ahead of her is not lost on Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, in a recent media conference call, Sityodtong was open about what lies ahead of Lee.

“I put Angela as a heavy underdog in this fight because she’s moving up a weight against a very, very dangerous KO striker with a 13-1 record, ”Sityodtong said, not mincing words.

“She’s [Xiong] finished almost everybody she’s faced. That being said, I also know Angela, and she’s always about making history.”

Since arriving at ONE at the end of 2017, “The Panda” has put on one impressive showing after another and has made the strawweight division her own.

When Xiong, who was formerly a boxer began her transition into mixed martial arts she relied heavily on her powerful stand-up game however over the years she has worked hard on developing her skills and has transformed into a complete martial artist. Xiong’s dedication to her training has not gone unnoticed.

“She has shown vast improvement in every single element of her game,” said Mitch Chilson, a member of the ONE commentary team.

“She’s got really strong boxing, and that’s her main weapon. But now we’re seeing her evolve into a ground specialist.”

Xiong’s ground game was on recent display in June against rugged Argentinian Laura Balin at ONE: PINNACLE OF POWER.

Xiong dominated Balin in the standup but was as equally at home on the ground as she was on her feet. Xiong’s constant grappling pressure allowed her to showcase her ground and pound expertise.

The 30-year-old who trains out of Bali MMA, one of Southeast Asia’s premier mixed martial art gyms only seems to be getting better each time she makes that walk to the cage.

“This title around my waist represents all the hard work I have put into my craft since the very beginning of my career. I have been practicing martial arts since I was a child. It is my passion, my livelihood, and my life,” said Xiong during the recent media conference call.

“Angela [Lee] is a tremendous fighter and champion, and I respect her as a martial artist. But this is my division and my belt, I will never give it up without a fight. On 9 November, the world will witness history, but I will leave the arena still champion.”

The challenge that Xiong represents will ensure that when the bout begins, fans will see the best version of Angela Lee there is.

“I live for challenges, this is why I do what I do, to test myself against the very best in the world. Now I am ready for a new challenge, and entering the strawweight division has lit a fire underneath me. On 9 November, prepare to see a more focused, faster, and stronger Angela Lee,” Lee said during the call.

“I believe in my team and my coaches, my Dad. I know what’s at stake here and I will do everything that I can to come out the winner. It’s time to make history.”

For fans and the athletes themselves, the opportunity to witness and participate in bouts of this magnitude do not come along every day. So everybody involved can expect the hype, anticipation, and tension to continue to increase as November 9 draws ever closer.

The UFC and ONE Championship could be on the verge of making mixed martial arts (MMA) history.

Earlier today (Wed. October 24, 2018) it was reported that the two promotions are discussing the first major blockbuster ‘trade’ within the sport. The UFC is willing to release Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson from his contract, and allow him to sign with ONE Championship. In turn, ONE would release Ben Askren in order for him to sign with the UFC.

This would be a major move for both parties, who would each be benefiting greatly from the deal. Bellator MMA President Scott Coker recently took to Twitter to react to the reports. Here’s what he had to say:

Johnson was recently defeated for the first time in his MMA career at 125 pounds. He dropped the UFC flyweight title to Henry Cejudo via split decision this past summer. Johnson was never really much of a draw as champion, and the same can be said about the flyweight division as a whole. Potentially trading away Johnson could mark the end of the UFC’s 125-pound division.

As for Askren, he hasn’t fought since November of last year, successfully defending the ONE welterweight title via first-round TKO. After the fight, Askren planned on retiring from MMA competition. However, these recent developments indicate Askren wants a few superfights before he walks away from fighting once and for all.

ONE Championship and the UFC are close to trading superstar fighters in an unprecedented blockbuster deal.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani tweeted just minutes ago that both promotions are on the verge of finalizing a potential mega-trade involving Demetrious Johnson and retired ONE champion Ben Askren:

The proposed deal would require the UFC to release former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson from his contract in order to allow him to sign with ONE. In return, ONE will release former welterweight champion Ben Askren from his contract so he could finally join the UFC. Sources have stated that the ‘trade’ isn’t finalized as of yet. However, all parties involved are hopeful the deal gets done soon.

Johnson just lost the flyweight title to Henry Cejudo after a record 13 straight title defenses. Matt Hume, Johnson’s head coach at AMC Pankration also serves as ONE’s vice president of operations.

Askren announced his retirement following his first-round victory over Shinya Aoki in November 2017. He is unbeaten in 18 professional fights. Askren also captured gold in Bellator MMA when he beat Douglas Lima to obtain the welterweight title.

On Monday, Askren tweeted that there was a 98 percent chance of him joining the UFC.

One can only wonder if this trade will be the proverbial death nail for the UFC’s flyweight division.

Malaysian standout Keanu Subba is looking to shake up the featherweight rankings as he is set to face Myanmar’s up-and-coming star Phoe “Bushido” Thaw.

Both men are slated to lock horns on the undercard of ONE: PURSUIT OF GREATNESS, which takes place at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar on Friday, 26 October.

Subba and Phoe Thaw is coming off impressive victories in their previous bouts and are looking to make a statement when they meet each other inside the ONE Championship cage.

However, for the 24-year-old native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he believes that having his hand raised against Phoe Thaw will catapult him to the upper echelon of ONE Championship’s deep featherweight division, making one of the possible options to vie for Martin Nguyen’s gold-plated strap.

“This is an exciting match that I’m looking forward to. Phoe Thaw is a big name, not just in his country, but also in the featherweight division. A win will definitely keep my momentum going until the time comes that I’ll be called for a title shot,” Subba said.

The 33-year-old Myanmar athlete is impressively carving his niche in the 70.3-kilogram weight class, owning a spotless record of 6-0 with five wins coming by way of finish.

In his match at ONE: QUEST FOR GOLD last February, Phoe Thaw pulled off a scintillating stoppage victory, thwarting Cambodian stalwart Sor Sey with a thunderous front kick in the opening round of their match.

Subba is completely aware of the task that he will be facing in Yangon, but he remains optimistic that he will be able to topple Phoe Thaw and hand him the first loss in his professional career.

“I know I have a big challenge ahead of me by facing Phoe Thaw. He is a complete mixed martial arts competitor, and he got the crowd every time he competes, which gives him an extra motivation. I’m definitely prepared for him. We worked very hard at the gym for this important match,” he stated.

“My goal is to keep on winning. If the assignment is to stop the ‘Bushido’ hype train, then I will do it. I am up for it,” Subba added.

Fresh from a first-round submission victory over Xie Chao of China, Subba believes that a convincing victory over an unbeaten foe such as Phoe Thaw will elevate his status in the featherweight bracket.

“I’m an optimistic person, I keep on learning and improving. I’m confident in my mixed martial arts skills, and I know it will lead me to another victory on Friday,” he concluded.

Multiple-time Lightweight World Champion Eddie Alvarez shook the world of mixed martial arts after it was officially announced that he signed an exclusive deal with ONE Championship a week ago.

Hours after ONE Championship publicly confirmed the acquisition of Alvarez, fans are already abuzz about his possible opponents in the world’s largest martial arts organization.

The 34-year-old native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has not even settled comfortably in his new home yet, but with the organization housing top-tier competitors in the lightweight division, five mainstays in the company’s 77.1-kilogram weight class appear as strong candidates to face him in his first bout on the ONE Championship stage.

Eduard Folayang

Arguably the biggest athlete acquisition in the seven-year history of ONE Championship, Alvarez provides a plethora of intriguing matchups, including a bout with former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang.

Regarded as the face of Philippine mixed martial arts, Folayang has captivated fans around the globe with his warm personality, humble demeanor, and epic battles in ONE Championship.

Over the course of his promotional run, Folayang has enjoyed a long list of unforgettable moments, including his shocking victory over Aoki to capture the lightweight crown in November 2016.

The 34-year-old resident of Baguio City, Philippines would be the perfect foil for the American newcomer, who loves nothing more than to stand up and trade.

In addition, Folayang has fortified his skill set with an ever-improving grappling game, which he showed in his most recent victories when he authored the first defeats in the careers of Russian standouts Kharun Atlangeriev and Aziz Pahrudinov.

Amir Khan

Singaporean sensation Amir Khan could secure a date with Alvarez if he pulls off an upset victory over Folayang in the main event of ONE: CONQUEST OF CHAMPIONS on 23 November as both men are slated to duke it out for the vacant ONE Lightweight World Championship.

The 23-year-old Singaporean phenom holds the exceptional record for the most wins and finishes in ONE Championship, scoring impressive victories over the likes of Bashir Ahmad, Jimmy Yabo, Jaroslav Jartim and Adrian Pang.

Khan is coming off the biggest win of his ONE Championship stint, submitting ex-ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario with a first-round rear-naked choke this past September.

Now, with Evolve’s new head coach Eduardo Pamplona mentoring him to new heights, Khan could provide a stern challenge to Alvarez.

Shinya Aoki

Aside from the potential encounter with Folayang or Khan, there is a very realistic chance the long-awaited trilogy bout between Alvarez and Aoki could finally happen in ONE Championship.

The two men split their previous encounters, with Aoki winning via first-round submission in their first meeting in December 2008 before Alvarez got even with a second-round stoppage triumph in their April 2012 rematch.

Riding high on a three-bout winning streak, Aoki is currently the top contender for the ONE Lightweight World Championship, awaiting the winner of the title tiff between Folayang and Khan on 23 November.

Should Aoki go on to successfully challenge the new champion, it would set the stage perfectly for a legendary rubber match between the two accomplished superstars.

Ev Ting

Hard-hitting, durable and relentless are just a few words to describe Malaysia’s Ev “E.T.” Ting as a martial artist, gaining the reputation as one of the most dynamic stand-up specialists in the ONE Championship lightweight division.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Ting is a well-rounded competitor who prefers to use his versatile striking repertoire to defeat his opponents.

More than half of his career victories have come by way of finish, including his surprising first-round stoppage triumph over former ONE Welterweight World Champion Nobutatsu Suzuki.

Although he fell short in his most recent outing against Shinya Aoki, Ting remains as one of the top combatants in the division and would be an acid test to Alvarez.

Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev

A hard-hitting wrestler from Istanbul, Turkey, Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev is truly a force to be reckoned with in ONE Championship’s talent-rich lightweight bracket as he possesses both knockout power and smothering grappling.

In his most recent bout under the ONE Championship banner, Arslanaliev proved that he is more than capable of overcoming adversity, notching a first-round knockout victory over Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin.

A martial artist that could very well be the dark horse of the lightweight ranks, Arslanaliev would be an excellent-but-formidable foe for Alvarez in his ONE Championship debut.
