With ONE Fighting Championship holding it’s first ever event this past Saturday in Singapore, the upstart promotion will look to put on an even better show the second time around.

Their first event, “Champion vs. Champion” consisted of a ten-bout card showcasing several exciting matchups. There were, however a few bouts that featured mismatched opponents but that was to be expected for any new promotion with a shallow talent pool.

ONE FC CEO Victor Cui is certainly looking to increase the depth of those waters by adding fighters like UFC veteran Akihiro Gono (32-16-7), and undefeated Indonesian fighter Fransino Tirta (10-0-1) to the roster.

According to MMAWeekly.com, both fighters were in attendance at this past weekends Singapore event, also indicating from sources that both fighters had been in talks with Cui.

Although, the ONE FC show did not deliver on the promise that it would be the “UFC of Asia” it was certainly an entertaining event, which saw a packed Singapore Indoor Stadium. Cui noted to the website that his promotion has plans in the works for another eight events, so it appears that ONE FC won’t be going anywhere for the near future except up.

One Fighting Championship held their inaugural event on Saturday, September 3, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Fans who got up early enough were able to watch the entire “Champion vs. Champion” ten bout card for free via a live stream at Sherdog.com which began at 8AM EST (5AM PST).

The event featured a main event battle between Filipino Wushu champ Eduard Folayang battle it out for three rounds with South Korean A Sol Kwon. Folayang was the aggressor throughout most of the fight, scoring with a few great throws, but it was Kwon who would do most of the damage cutting his opponent in several places.

Folayang would fight through all of the injuries, as well as an ugly looking broken nose to earn a unanimous decision from the judges in Singapore.

The co-main event saw UFC vets Yoshiyuki Yoshida and Phil Baroni scrap for three rounds, with Yoshida using strong takedowns to control ‘The New York Bad Ass’ from the top. Baroni was clearly frustrated by his opponents top control and would end up losing by unanimous decision to his Japanese opponent.

CEO and Owner Victor Cui offered bonuses of $5,000 US dollars for “Fight of the Night” to Eduard Folayang and A Sol Kwon, while awarding a “Submission of the Night” bonus to Eric Kelly for his rear-naked choke win over Mitch Chilson, and a “Knockout of the Night” bonus went to (sorry missed it, update once I have it).

Some are already calling the One Fighting Championship promotion the “UFC of Asia” and that is even before they’ve held their first event. For the promotions boss, Victor Cui, that’s something that sits well with him.

The OneFC boss has run events before, under the Martial Combat banner in conjunction with ESPN StarSports. Now Cui is set to move into a bigger market with his new promotions inaugural event, OneFC: Champion vs. Champion, which is scheduled to take place next month on September 3 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

In a recent interview with MMA-Japan.com, Cui provided some background as to his involvement in the sport as well as his hopes for just how big he hopes OneFC might become.

What was the reason to start the OneFC banner when the Martial Combat banner was already going?
… The media has rightly called ONE Fighting Championship the UFC of Asia. The major difference in the approach is the capital (investment) and network. Again, throughout my 15 years in the sports media industry, I’ve been fortunate to have made a lot of friends around the world. For ONE Fighting Championship, I have invested my personal capital and also raised a significant pool of capital from a group of foreign investors with deep pockets. If everything goes according to plan, ONE Fighting Championship will be in 1 billion homes in Asia by the end of this year.

What made you decide to bring on PrideFC rules as well as Unified Rules?
It’s simple. I want to put on exciting fights that the fans want to see. Who doesn’t want to see the best of Pride FC and the Unified Rules of Martial Arts? Honestly, the best of the best MMA organizations in the history of the sport are the UFC and Pride FC. You cannot argue with that. So for ONE FC, I thought combining the best of both worlds; the best of the East and the best of the West. I recruited almost every top Asian fighter and world champion and because of such, you are going to see some of the most incredible and exciting fights ever!
