Oumar 'Reug Reug' Kane Stuns Anatoly Malykhin, Takes Heavyweight Title via Split Decision - ONE 169 Highlights

Senegalese sensation Oumar ‘Reug Reug’ Kane shocked the world at ONE 169 in Bangkok, scoring a split decision victory over Anatoly Malykhin to claim the ONE heavyweight title.

Things got off to a smashing start for Kane in the opening round as he quickly took Malykhin to the mat — becoming the first fighter to ever do so inside the Circle — and promptly ragdolling him. However, Malykhin made a habit out of putting his arm over the ring ropes to stay upright which is akin to grabbing the cage in a more traditional MMA setting.

That prompted referee Herb Dean to issue a strong warning that eventually resulted in a yellow card when Malykhin did it a second time.

Despite the early setback, Malykhin appeared to be in control for much of the last three rounds, continuously cornering ‘Reug Reug’ and landing a few big blows before fishing for a takedown he’d never quite land. Dean stayed busy by breaking the fighters up every couple of minutes, but before long, they’d end up back in the same position. Things went that way for much of the final 10 minutes, leading many to believe that Malykhin’s aggression and control time would ultimately win him the fight after going the distance for the first time in his career.

Instead, the judges in Bangkok threw fight fans for a loop, crowning Kane the new ONE heavyweight king via a somewhat controversial split decision.

Official Result: Oumar ‘Reug Reug’ Kane def. Anatoly Malykhin via split decision to win the ONE heavyweight world championship.

With the win, Kane becomes ONE Championship’s first African-born titleholder.

Meanwhile, Anatoly Malykhin suffered the first loss of his career, falling to 14-1 and seeing his coveted status as MMA’s first and only simultaneous three-division champion disappear. Still, ‘Sladkiy’ has both the ONE light heavyweight and middleweight world titles — two belts with plenty of challengers chomping at the bit to challenge the Russian juggernaut.

Months before he’s scheduled to square off with three-division ONE world champion Anatoly Malykhin, top-ranked heavyweight contender Oumar ‘Reug Reug’ Kane stepped inside the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium for a kickboxing clash with countryman Boucher Ketchup.

Kane is best known for his work in ONE’s heavyweight MMA division, earning a noteworthy win over 17-time BJJ world champion Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida in his last outing.

Reug Reug

Still, that didn’t stop him from putting his impressive knockout power on display as part of ONE Fight Night 23 in Bangkok. Meeting ‘Reug Reug’ inside the Circle was Ketchup, a Senegalese standout known for his fan-friendly fighting style.

As soon as the bell rang, it was off to the races with Ketchup rushing in and attempting to land a flying hammer fist. Throughout the fight, the hammer fist appeared to be the only strike Ketchup was interested in—or possibly the only one he knew how to throw. As Kane kept his composure and mixed up his strikes, Ketchup continued to rush in, throwing combinations like a drunk guy in a toughman contest.

Eventually, Ketchup’s unorthodox striking came back to bite him as ‘Reug Reug’ knocked him down twice in the opening round, with the second knockdown keeping him down for the count.

Oumar Kane, or as he is more commonly referred to in MMA, Reug Reug, is set to compete in his third professional MMA on April 7th. He is set to face off against Iranian power puncher, Mehdi Barghi, at ONE on TNT I.

Reug Reug recently sat down with LowKick MMA’s Frank Bonada to discuss his MMA career as well as his future plans in the sport.

Before MMA, Oumar Kane was a Senegalese wrestling champion. Like many other practitioners of a single martial art, he made the choice to transition over the MMA. He currently holds two (T)KO finishes in two fights. He had the following to say about the move to mixed martial arts:

“I’m a young man. I know I’m from a Senegalese wrestling background. But for the kickboxing and the muay thai, I have my coach who is always with me. Trying to push me, trying to give me advice. That’s why I don’t think I’ll have problems, even in the future.”

“I’m somebody who likes combat sports. It was very important for me to practise MMA, to practise a lot of sports. If there was no MMA, maybe I would try to find another combat sports to do.”

To say Reug Reug has high aspirations for his future career would be somewhat of an understatement. The Senegalese heavyweight wishes to pick up the belt in every organisation, regardless of who the champions are. He stated the following:

“Like I used to say, I don’t have any problem fighting anyone. So all the fighters, the MMA fighters around the world, I’m ready to fight them. My goal, my main target is to get the world belt. Where ever it is, I will take it from there. From Ngannou, that champion at ONE, anywhere else. Where ever there is a world belt, I will take it. And at any time, because I am ready.

How do you think Reug Reug would fair against the HW elite around the world? Let us know in the comments.
