Paige VanZant wants to get paid her worth — which is why she plans on testing free agency after this weekend.

VanZant has one fight left on her deal and has been planning to test free agency for a while only to suffer a string of broken arms and undergo multiple surgeries which have prevented her from completing the final fight of her contract. For now, things seem to be alright as she gets set to face Amanda Ribas in the UFC 251 main card opener on Saturday.

But the plan remains the same — test the market and listen to offers before she competes again. Especially as she claims she could have made the same money she has done with the UFC with a regular job over the past six years.

“I’ve added up all the money I’ve made in the UFC over six years, and I could have just had a regular job with the same pay,” VanZant told MMA Fighting. “I’m so thankful for everything the UFC has done for me, the platform they’ve given me. This is nothing against the UFC. But the contract I signed is what I signed and I know I need to honor it. That’s why I’m fighting this last fight out and I was never trying to break it early.

“It’s important to fight this fight out, honor my contract and then say listen this is my value and this is what I need to be paid to make it worth it.”

VanZant Wants To Prove Point To UFC

VanZant’s plans come in the midst of a fighter pay dispute many, such as Jon Jones and Jorge Masvidal, are having with the UFC. Like many, the women’s flyweight believes everyone should be paid more, especially given the nature of the sport.

And she is hoping that a win over a tough opponent in Ribas will give her the edge in future negotiations with the promotion.

“I wanted to fight somebody who was really good,” VanZant said. “Somebody who was ranked. Someone who it really mattered when I beat them.

“This is the last fight on my UFC contract and I want to be able to go to the UFC and be like ‘listen, this is how good I am. Yeah you haven’t seen me fight in a while and I break my arm a lot and I’ve always done always done other things but ultimately I’m a good fighter.’ I think this is a fight if I beat Amanda, it will prove that.”

VanZant and Ribas were previously scheduled to fight in March at UFC Brasilia in a Strawweight bout, however, VanZant had to pull out due to an undisclosed injury that required surgery, presumably an arm/shoulder issue that came up again. VanZant had dealt with a variety of injuries in the last few years that have kept her out of the octagon. She last fought over a year ago in January 2019 defeating Rachael Ostovich by submission in a very impressive victory.

When VanZant steps into the octagon in July, it will be the final fight on her contract. She has noted in the past she wants to consider free agency, so this very well might be the last time we get to see VanZant compete for the UFC for some time. At 8-4 in her career and 5-3 in the UFC, this will be a crucial fight to determine where VanZant might be headed to in the future.

Amanda Ribas on the other hand, is a name to behold here. The Brazilian is an impressive 9-1 and 3-0 in the UFC. Ribas sits at #15 in the strawweight division rankings, and while this bout will take a place at flyweight, a win over a huge name like Paige VanZant could skyrocket Ribas up the rankings. A lot will be on the line when these two women fight in July at UFC 251.

Who will come out on top at UFC 251? Paige VanZant or Amanda Ribas?

MMA fighters Paige VanZant and Austin Vanderford have explained why they have been posting naked pictures online during the lockdown.

Speaking to MMA Fighting VanZant said she came up with the idea after taking a picture of her husband Vanderford in some very short, shorts.

“Austin and I had taken a video of himself, or a picture in the gym, and I had glanced over and I was like, ‘Were you naked out there?’ And he was just wearing really short shorts. Cause he works out in really tiny shorts.

“And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have the best idea ever,’ and so we just kind of staged it where I was on the medicine ball and he had our double-edged bag covering his butt. Then it just kind of sparked from there because people liked them so much.”

While VanZant is no stranger to posing for pictures in next to nothing this is all new for Vanderford. The 30-year-old Bellator prospect explained why he wasn’t shy about stripping down for the whole world to see, he said.

“For one, I started wrestling since I was five, so I’ve been wearing one of those singlets my entire life so there isn’t a whole lot that it doesn’t show. That’s one. Two, before I left Alaska to move here to the states to go to school and all that, my mom gave me one word of advice before I left. She said ‘Austin, the rest of the world isn’t like Alaska. You can’t just go outside and go pee wherever you want. You can’t show yourself off, so be careful.’ Fast forward like a year later, and I actually got a ticket for ‘scattering rubbish’ cause I had peed in a park or something. There might have been a few beers involved.

“I’ve just never been shy about that. I have fun. My wife sees me naked all day everyday anyway, so I thought the rest of the world deserves it, too.”

UFC flyweight VanZant was keen to stress the whole thing is not a social media stunt to garner attention, it’s more about just having fun together as husband and wife.

“It’s not really a social media stunt – it’s not to get attention,” VanZant said. “I just think I want to spread the idea, we’ve been married for over a year and a half, and just to love your significant other, and have fun with them, and [show] how important it is to just make the most of the relationships that you have.

“We’re really just having a really good time and trying to spread love. We’re married, so I’m not embarrassed, I’m not shy about the way we live our life at all.”
