UFC lightweight contender Paul Felder wants Conor McGregor out of the division’s title picture.

After a 15-month absence, McGregor will be returning to the Octagon on January 18 when he faces Donald Cerrone in a welterweight matchup. It will interestingly be at 170 pounds instead of McGregor’s usual weight class in 155.

Some believe it’s because he wants to face Jorge Masvidal next. UFC president Dana White, meanwhile, claims it’s because he didn’t want to deal with the weight cut as he plans on facing Khabib Nurmagomedov right after.

Felder is hoping it’s the former, especially ahead of his pivotal lightweight fight against Dan Hooker in the UFC Auckland headliner on February 23:

“That’s what I’m hoping, because he wants to fight at 170 and he’s hunting that Jorge Masvidal fight, then let him do that,” Felder told MMA Junkie. “Take him lower down the rankings so that guys like me and Dan Hooker, who are putting in work at 155 pounds, guys like Justin Gaethje, get him out of our way and let us fight for the belt in those big fights.

“If he’s still in the rankings in the top three, top five, guys are going to want to fight him, guys are going to want to call out. They’re going to wait to try to fight him and it just mixes things up. It muddies stuff up for us.”

Felder certainly has a point. But even with a win against Hooker, he would likely need one or more two wins at the least before thinking of getting a title shot.

Paul Felder has ill intentions for his matchup with Dan Hooker at UFC Auckland in February.

The No. 6-ranked Felder takes on No. 7-ranked Hooker inside the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on February 23. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Felder previewed his upcoming bout with Felder, touching on the fact that he’s stepping into enemy territory. Felder revealed he plans on knocking out Hooker in front of his friends and family before pursuing a title opportunity.

“As far as intensity, that was real,” Felder said. “I went down to New Zealand expecting a little bit of that from Dan because of how we interacted on social media. We kind of went back-to-forth a little bit. But that’s what it’s all about. We’re two guys that are trying to rally for a title shot after this one.

“We’re in each other’s way. That’s how it should be, that’s how it’s supposed to be when you’ve got a five-round main event with a guy. I’m invading into his country. My whole plan is to knock his ass out in front of all his friends and family and take that money and get out of there and go on to a title shot.”

Felder enters the bout on a two-fight win streak over James Vick and Edson Barboza. He’ll take on Hooker, who is on a two-fight win streak of his own after besting Vick and Al Iaquinta. Now, Hooker has a shot to get into the title picture with a big win over Felder.

UFC lightweight competitor Paul Felder has signed a new multi-fight deal with the UFC. MMA Fighting confirmed the news with Felder’s manager Brian Butler of Suckerpunch Entertainment.

Details surrounding the new deal were not made public. Butler noted the new deal came along with Felder’s bout agreement to fight Dan Hooker at UFC Auckland on February 23. Felder is said to be “very happy” with the new terms. Since joining the UFC in 2014, Felder has quickly risen to the top ranks of the 155-pound division.

During that time, Felder has proven to be one of the more entertaining combatants to grace the UFC’s Octagon as well. Felder is currently on a two-fight win streak, last defeating Edson Barboza at UFC 242 in September. Currently the No. 6-ranked lightweight in the UFC, Felder has the opportunity to make quite a statement in enemy territory against Hooker in New Zealand.

Aside from his work inside the Octagon, Felder has also been part of the UFC’s broadcast team as a color commentator. The 35-year-old has managed to keep very busy during his time with the UFC, and it looks like he continues to be a part of the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion’s plans moving forward.
