Paul Heyman has always had his finger on the pulse of the MMA world. He remembers watching UFC 1, had a good working relationship with Semaphore Entertainment Group, the original owners of the UFC, and he even created characters (see: Tazz) in his wrestling universe based on fighters.
After leaving World Wrestling Entertainment in 2006, he got together with a group of investors and former K-1/PRIDE producers in attempt to purchase Strikeforce. That deal never materialized because, as Heyman said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, he felt Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker wasn’t getting a fair deal.
“At the end of the day, one of our financial guys, who was the key to the deal, wanted to change the deal, and I wasn’t comfortable with it. One of the producers who I was very close with said, ‘This deal is going to go south and Coker is going to get burned,’ and I wasn’t going to do it, especially coming out of the wrestling world and my first entry into MMA is going to be that I’m a rip-off artist? No thanks. I don’t want to live the rest of my life with that reputation. I already have enough of that as it is. This ain’t a carny play. This is a legitimate business offer and I wasn’t trying to rip anyone off.”
Heyman, the mastermind between the pro wrestling industry-changing ECW promotion in the 90s, revealed Monday that the WWE had the option to not allow The Ultimate Fighter 1 to follow Raw and didn’t take it.
“I was there in the room when we decided whether to let The Ultimate Fighter come on after Monday Night Raw,” Heyman told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “They had the right to approve or decline any programming that followed them.”

LAS VEGAS — Moments after Brock Lesnar‘s dramatic submission win over Shane Carwin at UFC 116, MMA Fighting caught up with four of the biggest names in wrestling history, who just so happen to be good friends of Lesnar’s: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Bill Goldberg, Jim Ross and Paul Heyman.
All four men described their take on Lesnar’s win, his road back to the UFC and his place in the heavyweight division.

LAS VEGAS — Would you believe it if I told you that Paul Heyman, the former owner of Extreme Championship Wrestling and Brock Lesnar‘s first manager in WWE, is now one of Lesnar’s closest friends? Well, it’s true, and it’s amazing when you think about the fact that friendships don’t last very long in the world of pro wrestling.
Lesnar and Heyman are so close that when they first saw each other this week, prior to Lesnar’s title fight at UFC 116 versus Shane Carwin, Lesnar handed Heyman a photo of his daughter, Mya, and Heyman’s daughter, Azalea, holding hands in their strollers taken at WrestleMania in 2003. Heyman pointed to that photo and gesture as an example of how strong their eight-year bond is.
MMA Fighting spoke to Heyman following Thursday’s press conference about his relationship with Lesnar, how close he came to buying Strikeforce, his new project, The Heyman Hustle, and his future in MMA and pro wrestling.
