Ahead of his Octagon return at UFC 294 in October, one-time middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has promised a “savage” win over arch-rival, Khamzat Chimaev in their upcoming showdown – once more predicting a stoppage over the undefeated finisher.

Costa, the current number seven ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined from active competition since he took main card status at UFC 278 back in August, landing a close, unanimous decision win over former middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold.

As for Chimaev, the Chechen-born contender improved to 12-0 as a professional back in September of last year at UFC 279, landing a first round D’Arce choke submission win over Kevin Holland.

Predicting various routes to victory over undefeated challenger, Chimaev in the Middle East, Costa has vowed to land a “savage” triumph over the former, insisting there is no way in which the AllStars MMA mainstay can win on ‘Fight Island’.

“I don’t see any chance of him (Khamzat Chimaev) winning the fight,” Paulo Costa told MMA Junkie. “Honestly, I’m being very honest. This will be savage. This will be fireworks. This will be wild. I bring my best, I will be there.”

“I think the winner of this fight is going to be the first for the title shot,” Paulo Costa explained. “I think the winner between me and Khamzat will be next in the line for the title shot.”

Prior to his win over former middleweight champion, Rockhold, Costa had suffered a pair of losses consecutively to Italian contender, Marvin Vettori, which followed a first professional loss in the form of a second round TKO loss to two-time division champion, Israel Adesanya back in 2020 – in the Brazilian’s first title challenge under the banner of the Dana White-led promotion.

Slated to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October, undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev is sure to earn a shot at middleweight gold with a win over Paulo Costa, per UFC color-commentator, Daniel Cormier.

Chimaev, the current number four ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since he took co-main event honors at UFC 279 back in September of last year against Kevin Holland, stopping the Californian with a first round D’Arce choke submission victory.

As for Costa, the Belo Horizonte native himself has yet to return since he featured on the main card of UFC 278 back in August, returning to the winner’s enclosure with a unanimous decision win over former undisputed champion, Luke Rockhold, with the Brazilian snapping a two-fight losing skid.

Khamzat Chimaev set to compete for a title with a win over Paulo Costa at UFC 294

According to former duel-weight champion, Cormier to boot, Chimaev would be undeniable for a shot at middleweight gold, should he dispatch Costa at UFC 294 in October.

“If he (Khamzat Chimaev) beats Paulo Costa, Khamzat Chimaev will have earned himself a title fight at 185 pounds,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “And I don’t think anyone can disagree with that. I don’t believe that beating Gilbert Burns, going up, and now beating Paulo Costa doesn’t get you a championship opportunity. It makes you the number one contender between Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis.”

As for the aforenoted current champion, Adesanya, the Nigerian-Kiwi is expected to feature in the main event of UFC 293 in September in a return to Sydney, Australia – taking on either du Plessis, or the surging recent winner, Sean Strickland in a championship defense.

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev plans on turning his attention toward UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya once he takes care of some business with Paulo Costa at UFC 294.

Borz’ will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon as the UFC heads back to Abu Dhabi on October 21. Khamzat Chimaev is expected to step into the co-main event spotlight for a high-profile middleweight clash with one-time title challenger Paulo Costa in the UAE capital. During an appearance at UFC London on Saturday, Chimaev spoke with TNT Sports’ Caroline Pearce and offered a prediction for his clash with Costa.

“I’ll make that guy cry in the cage like I always do,” Chimaev said of his upcoming fight. “Smash. Smash somebody, make money. Make that guy cry, go home and be in Brazil. Nobody likes him, all Brazilians write to me and support me. That guy’s not Brazilian, so I’m going to go and smash this guy and make him cry.”

By the time he steps back into the Octagon in October, it will have been well over a year since his last appearance at UFC 279 where he ragdolled Kevin Holland on his way to a first-round finish. Asked why the lengthy layoff, Khamzat Chimaev said:

“I don’t know, I make everyone scared. I don’t know, I fight with everybody,” he insisted. “Ask Dana White. I never said no. I’m ready always, I’ve been out a long time out. I’ve been training all the time. When big money comes, it’s hard to make a fight for me.”

Khamzat Chimaev Was Willing to Take a Fight at Light Heavyweight

‘Borz’ revealed that he had even asked for a fight at light heavyweight with the division suffering a slew of injuries near the top of the rankings.

“I fight in all divisions. For me, it doesn’t matter,” he said. “I asked Dana White when somebody dropped out, I asked to fight with Glover for the title [at light heavyweight]. I asked if somebody gets injured if I can fight for the title this way. It will come, all my titles will come soon. I’m ready for all divisions, it doesn’t matter for me. I can go down, I just need the time. Not like last time giving me four weeks.”

For now, Khamzat Chimaev will keep his sights on the middleweight division, where one big win over Paulo Costa this fall could put him in line for a title opportunity. Asked if the reigning middleweight champ, Israel Adesanya, was already on his radar, ‘Borz’ answered in the affirmative.

“Of course, if he’s the champ, of course, I’ve got my eye [on him],” he said. “I’ve got all champs on my eye. I want my belts, at least three belts.”
