Currently embroiled in a contract dispute with the UFC, one-time middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has questioned if the organization purposely field low financial pursues and offers to fighters from Brazil, following the cancellation of his planned February fight with Robert Whittaker.

Costa, a native of Belo Horizonte, was expected to make his Octagon return at UFC 284 in February of next year in Perth, Australia – with a matchup against former undisputed champion, Whittaker previously announced by the promotion.

However, in recent weeks, Costa, who retains just a single fight on his current, has insisted he would not be fighting Whittaker next year, claiming he had not signed a bout agreement to face the former titleholder, as he argues with the UFC regarding the notorious issue of fighter pay.

Reports earlier this week confirmed how Costa and Whittaker would not be fighting at UFC 284 in February, with the former currently embroiled in a contract dispute with the Dana White-led promotion.

Sharing his thoughts on the failed fight with Whittaker, Costa revealed the promotion offered him a new six-fight deal when he requested more money to fight the former, before questioning if the UFC purposely offer lower financial compensation to fighters from Brazil.

“I think they (the UFC) actually offer very low numbers for Brazilians,” Paulo Costa told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “Maybe they think, ‘Ah, there mf’ers live in Brazil in the jungle, they don’t need real money because the currency is like 5 times less than dollars, so let’s pay bullsh*t.’”

“The mentality of Brazilians is, ‘OK, I agree, let’s do [it],’” Paulo Costa explained. “I did that. And I know the Brazilians do that a lot. … But this is horrible for the business.”

Furthermore, Costa admitted that he was still open to fighting Whittaker in the new year, however, urged UFC Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell to make him a better offer to secure a March matchup.

“[There’s] an easy way to make this fight happen,” Paulo Costa said. “I can fight in March. Hey, Hunter [Campbell], if you want that fight, if you want me to fight Whittaker, just send a contract with fair numbers.” (Transcribed by Shaheen Al-Shatti

With the Brazilian’s most recent purse disclosed, Costa secured a $65,000 show purse, and a further $65,000 win bonus for his UFC 278 unanimous decision win over former champion, Luke Rockhold in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Following multiple claims from UFC middleweight contender, Paulo Costa that he had, in fact, not officially signed to fight former undisputed division champion, Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 on February 12. in Perth, Australia – reports have confirmed the matchup has now officially been removed from the RAC Arena event.

Costa, the current #6 ranked middleweight contender – as recently as earlier this Monday evening, denied claims from Whittaker that he was “trolling” with suggestions that he was not fighting him in Australia – confirming he had not penned a bout agreement.

“Guys sending me this, I feel sad for Robert (Whittaker) because the UFC didn’t tell him the truth lol, you don’t deserve this,” Paulo Costa tweeted. “Bro, sorry I won’t fight you in Perth. UFC posting this (Robert vs. Costa) just to sell tickets, you need to realize that. They (the UFC) didn’t pay me, I’m out! I’m not joking.”

Following Costa’s tweet, ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto reported how the Brazilian would, in fact, not be fighting Whittaker at UFC 284 next February.

“No troll job,” Okamoto tweeted. “Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker will NOT fight at UFC 274 in February, per sources. More info coming to ESPN.”

A further report from Okamoto confirmed how the UFC were in discussions with Paulo Costa in an attempt to trash out the Brazilian’s contract – with the latter repeatedly stating how his next Octagon walk would come as the final on his current contract with the Dana White-led organization.

As per the report, Whittaker is also expected to be removed from the Australia card on February 12. – in favor of booking the former undisputed champion at a later date instead.

One-time UFC middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has claimed he has yet to put pen to paper on a deal to fight former undisputed division champion, Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 on February 11. next in Perth, Australia – calling the promotion’s promotion of the bout as “fake news”.

Costa, the current #6 ranked middleweight contender, most recently featured on the main card of UFC 278 back in August of this year against former undisputed champion, Luke Rockhold – snapping a two-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision victory.

As for former champion, Whittaker, the #2 ranked contender managed to secure a unanimous decision win over common-foe, Marvin Vettori in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Paris back in July of this year.

In the time since his unanimous judging win over Rockhold earlier this summer, reports suggested Paulo Costa was booked to fight against Robert Whittaker in February of next year on the main card of UFC 284.

However, Costa, who retains just a single fight on his current contract with the organization, insists he has not signed to fight the Australian next year – as he attempts to secure his final contracted fight and then depart the organization.

Paulo Costa insists he has not signed to fight Robert Whittaker at UFC 284

This Tuesday evening, however, Costa has labelled reports of a fight with Whittaker as “fake news”, blasting the UFC for promoting the bout as if both sides had officially agreed to fight on February 11.

“I’m asking UFC to show my signs (sic) (signature) in this non-existent contract lol,” Paulo Costa tweeted in response to a Twitter user who questioned who would win between the two at UFC 284. “That’s pure fake news.”

Challenging former champion, Israel Adesanya for undisputed gold at UFC 253 back in 2020, Costa dropped his first professional loss in the form of a second round knockout loss in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

In August of the following year, the Belo Horizonte native forced an impromptu light heavyweight headliner with the aforenoted, Vettori, where he ultimately suffered a unanimous decision defeat.
