Bellator 96Press Release – Newport Beach, CA. (May 1st, 2013) – After delivering a dramatic and dominating submission victory in his first title defense, top ranked Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler will once again put his title on the line as Bellator MMA returns to WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma Wednesday, June 19th for the start of the Bellator MMA Summer Series live on Spike TV.

The event will broadcast LIVE starting at 6 p.m. CST on Spike. The preliminary card will be streamed LIVE and FREE on Spike.com starting at 5:30 p.m. EST. Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or by visiting the WinStar World Casino Box Office, with tickets starting at just $45 dollars.

Only 27, Chandler holds impressive victories over Eddie Alvarez, Rick Hawn, Akihiro Gono and Patricky Pitbull while sporting a spotless 11-0 record that has catapulted the Alliance MMA product into Top 3 rankings across the MMA landscape.

“I’m excited to get back in the cage and defend the belt against a tough guy like Jansen,” Chandler said. “He’s proven to be a very tough and durable competitor. My plan is the same as every fight, which is to show up new and improved and collect another dominant finish for the fans.”

Jansen enters the fight riding a six fight win streak that includes a dominating Bellator Lightweight Tournament run with victories over Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ricardo Tirloni, as well as a Finals win over Polish phenom Marcin Held. With the Oregon native owning an established submission pedigree and the resilience to have never been finished inside the cage, Jansen presents a unique set of challenges for Chandler on June 19th.

“I really want this fight to be an absolute grind and make Mike as uncomfortable as possible inside that cage,” Jansen said. “I’ve been known in my career to really be able to weather the storm and I really feel like I get stronger inside the cage as the fight goes on, and I’m really looking forward to having that full 25 minutes to work with and take this fight in deep waters. This is just an incredible opportunity for me and would a huge validation on my career to become a Bellator World Champion.”

Know across MMA as one of the top light heavyweights in the world, King Mo returns and will begin his quest to claim the Bellator Light Heavyweight Title. No stranger to WinStar, Mo had the crowd on its feet last January as he delivered a vicious knockout in opening round action, and will be looking for a similar performance against Seth “The Silverback” Petruzelli.

“Seth has been in this game for a long time and has beaten guys like Kimbo, Ricco Rodriguez and Dan Severn so this fight is going to be tough, but I’ve been working my ass off in the gym with Jeff Mayweather and my team and I’m ready to get another win under my belt,” Mo said. “Point blank, I’m looking to deliver a straight Mortal Kombat style fatality to Seth.”

Decorated MMA legend Renato “Babalu” Sobral will also make his return to the Bellator cage as the imposing Brazilian looks to punch his ticket to the Bellator Light Heavyweight Finals with a victory over Tennessee’s own Jacob Noe. After both men had their first taste of Bellator Tournament action last season, expectations have risen for both competitors.

“God has blessed me with the opportunity to fight again and consequently has cursed my opponents,” Babalu stated.

After nearly two years away from the cage, the always exciting and controversial War Machine will be back in action in front of a raucous WinStar crowd. Injuries and legal troubles have delayed the Bellator debut for War Machine but the highly skilled welterweight has finally put the past behind him and is ready to show the MMA world what it has been missing.

“It’s like I hit the rewind button,” War Machine said. “I pressed rewind and now I have a chance to get my life back on track. It feels great. Right now I’m just out to show the world that I do belong here fighting the best with Bellator.”

“This event is insanely stacked,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “With a Lightweight Title fight, Mo, Babalu, and War Machine, this is going to be an amazing show start to finish on Spike.”

Bellator MMA Main Card:

Bellator Lightweight Title Fight: Michael Chandler (11-0) vs. Dave Jansen (19-2)

Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament: King Mo Lawal (9-2) vs. Seth Petruzelli (14-7)

Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament: Renato “Babalu” Sobral (37-10) vs. Jacob Noe (11-2)

Welterweight Feature Fight: War Machine (12-4) vs. Blas Avena (8-6)

Press Release – KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 1, 2013) – On the heels of her second-career Invicta Fighting Championships “Fight of the Night” performance, crowd-pleasing, prolific striker Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (5-3-1) of Pleasanton, Calif. has signed a new, multi-fight agreement with the women’s world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion and will drop from bantamweight (135 pounds) to flyweight (125 pounds) and challenge Jennifer Maia (7-2) of Curitiba, Brazil. at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City on Saturday, July 13.

The winner of the Invicta FC 6 matchup between Smith and Maia will be awarded a title shot against newly crowned Invicta FC World Flyweight Champion Barb Honchak (8-2) of Bettendorf, Iowa.

“We are excited to bring Leslie under the Invicta Fighting Championships umbrella for the long-term and to watch her compete in a new weight class that is becoming super competitive in our promotion,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp. “Since we launched our live event series last year, Leslie has demonstrated incredible tenacity and athleticism by putting on some of the most memorable fights in our cage. She is a true warrior as is her opponent Jennifer Maia, so we are looking forward to an explosive matchup between two of the sport’s stars on what will be Invicta FC’s biggest fight card to date.”

The 30-year-old Smith engaged in an all-out war with former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman at Invicta FC 5 at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City on April 5. Following the conclusion of the three-round contest that many believe Smith won, however, Kaufman was awarded a controversial, split decision, prompting widespread boos from the displeased, capacity crowd.

Smith also won “Fight of the Night” honors at the inaugural Invicta FC event on April 28, 2012, after slugging it out relentlessly with fellow striker Kaitlin Young for the duration of their three-round bantamweight bout. The fight was declared a majority draw, setting up a much-anticipated rematch at Invicta FC 3 on Oct. 6 that saw Smith take charge and finish Young with an onslaught of punches from mount position in the second round (2:19) of the matchup.

Maia, a 24-year-old submission specialist, notched her first victory in the Invicta FC cage with a stunning upset, unanimous decision win over superstar Zoila Frausto Gurgel on April 5. Recognized as one of Brazil’s quickest rising stars, Maia made quick work of each of her first four professional career opponents, scoring a first round TKO (punches) in her pro debut on Suelen Pinheiro Ribeiro in 2009, and submitting each of her next three opponents inside the first round.

Tickets for Invicta FC 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen 2, go on sale soon.

In the main event of the stacked 13-bout card, ferocious KO artist and pound-for-pound sensation Cris Cyborg (11-1, 1 NC) of Curitiba, Brazil will face off with fellow superstar and submission ace Marloes Coenen (21-5) of The Netherlands in the first-ever Invicta FC world featherweight (145 pounds) championship bout.

The showdown between rivals Cyborg and Coenen marks a highly-anticipated rematch to their explosive, barnburner first fight in Sunrise, Fla. on Jan 30, 2010 in which Cyborg emerged victorious by way of TKO (punches) in the third and final scheduled round (3:40) of action.

In the co-main event, reigning Invicta FC world strawweight (115 pounds) champion Carla “Cookie Monster” Esparza (9-2) of Redondo Beach, Calif. will put her title on the line against undefeated JEWELS champion Ayaka Hamasaki (9-0) of Tokyo, Japan.

Press Release – London, England (April 30, 2013) – CAGE Warriors Fighting Championship has today made one of its most significant acquisitions to date by securing the signature of unbeaten English welterweight Tom Breese.

One of the UK’s top prospects having finished all six of his opponents since making his professional debut in September 2010, Breese (6-0) has inked a five-fight deal that will see him compete exclusively for Cage Warriors.

The Birmingham native, who was British Junior Wrestling Champion in 2011, picked up the biggest win of his young career back in December when he submitted Warren Kee to win the BAMMA British welterweight title.

“I’m very pleased and excited to be joining Cage Warriors and making my stamp on their welterweight division,” said Breese, who turns 22 in September.

“I look forward to fighting internationally too against world-class opponents. The past and present fighters and belt holders passing through Cage Warriors speaks for itself. Make no mistake: I’m here for gold and gold is what I’ll get.”

Following his most recent outing in December, Breese spent time at Tristar Gym in Montreal after being asked to come in as a sparring partner for UFC welterweight champion Georges St Pierre ahead of his recent successful title defence against Nick Diaz.

“Tom Breese is one of the most exciting young fighters this sport has to offer right now and I’m absolutely delighted that he has decided to take the next step in his career by signing with us” said Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan.

“A fighter of his enormous ability needs to be fighting regularly and not lying idle. We’ll give him the kind of big fights that he deserves here at Cage Warriors. This kid is going right to the top and Cage Warriors will help him to get there.”

Keep track of Cage Warriors on Facebook and Twitter for news of Tom Breese’s imminent CWFC debut.

Press Release – The Maximum Fighting Championship is pleased to announce the official press conference for the introduction of several main-card fighters who will be competing at MFC 37: True Grit.

The press conference will take place on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at the Baccarat Casino (10128-104 Ave, Downtown Edmonton). Fighters will be available for one-on-one interviews as well as for video and still photographs.

MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich will be on hand to meet with the media and discuss MFC 37: True Grit which will go off on Friday, May 10 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. MFC 37: True Grit will air live on AXS TV (formerly HDNet) throughout the United States beginning at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).

A battle for MFC world heavyweight title tops the lineup for MFC 37, as American star Chris “Beast Boy” Barnett takes on undefeated Canadian sensation Smealinho “The Prince” Rama.

Barnett (7-1), who fights out of Atlanta, Georgia, makes his debut in the Maximum Fighting Championship riding a two-fight winning streak and boasting five career victories by way of knockout. Barnett, a former football player at the University of South Florida, is also a talented grappler having successfully competed in numerous elite-level tournaments.

Rama (6-0) comes into the title fight on a tremendous high and having already dominated all his previous opponents under the MFC banner. A native of Albania who now fights out of Calgary, Alberta, Rama has won all six of his career bouts inside the opening round with three each coming by knockout and submission including his first-round destruction of Mike Hackert by TKO at MFC 36. Rama’s previous successes have earned him the MFC’s 2012 Submission of the Year and he was named 2012 Male Rookie of the Year by Fight Matrix.

Leading up to the title fight is a stacked MFC 37 main card featuring the inaugural fight in the MFC’s new bantamweight division. Kicking off the spirited 135-pound ranks is a showdown between young standouts Ryan “Baby Face” Benoit and Anthony Birchak. The two have already engaged in a boisterous war of words on Twitter and the rivalry is sure to explode once they enter the MFC ring.

Benoit (6-1), who fights out of Dallas, Texas, has won four straight fights, the last two being first-round knockouts coming in less than two minutes. Birchak (9-1), who hails from Tucson, Arizona, will bring a three-fight winning streak into the bout, all three of them finished by way of knockout.

Two middleweight bouts take center stage on the MFC 37 main card. Former MFC middleweight title challenger “Smilen” Sam Alvey will meet Jay “Da Spyda Killa” Silva in one clash, while Jason “The Savage” Zentgraf takes on Luke “Hayabusa” Harris in the other.

Alvey (19-5) lost a narrow decision in his last outing – a five-round war for the title back at MFC 36. The Temecula, California, product boasts 11 career knockouts, and will be once again cornered by his wife – “America’s Next Top Model” winner McKey Sullivan. Silva (8-7), who fights out of Huntington Beach, California, is one of the most dangerous strikers in the division with five career knockouts plus a pair of noteworthy submission victories.

Zentgraf (7-1) is on the verge of becoming a key figure in the MFC middleweight ranks as the Missoula, Montana, product has won four straight fights, all four coming by submission including three inside the first round. He’ll face the toughest test of his career in taking on judo/jiu-jitsu black belt and hometown favorite Harris (9-2). Harris, who trains in St. Albert, Alberta, won nine straight bouts – all by first-round submission – before suffering a first-round TKO loss to Joseph Henle at MFC 34.

A pair of lightweight matchups round out the MFC 37 main card. In one clash, Kurt “The Hurt” Southern and “The Afrikan Assassin” Mukai Maromo will lock horns as both fighters attempt to rebound from heartbreaking losses.

Southern (11-4) was in the midst of an impressive outing at MFC 36 when he was surprisingly submitted by Jonatas Novaes in the third round – a loss which snapped a three-fight winning streak for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, fighter. Maromo (8-3) will also be out for redemption after suffering a third-round submission loss to Graham Spencer in the MFC lightweight title fight at MFC 36. Maromo, a native of Harare, Zimbabwe who now fights out of Edmonton, Alberta, will also be out to avenge a first-round submission loss to Southern from back in October 2010.

The other lightweight battle will launch the AXS TV Fights card as fan favorite Garrett “Nasty” Nybakken (5-5), an Edmonton, Alberta, product, meets Peter Neufeld (6-3), who hails from Lethbridge, Alberta.

The MFC 37: True Grit undercard will feature four fights, and for the first time in organizational history, the preliminary bouts will be airing live on the MFC Facebook page. The MFC 37 undercard is highlighted by the first “Brother vs. Brother” bout in any major organization as Edmonton natives Mike and Thomas Treadwell will go toe-to-toe. The Treadwells, who are not only siblings but also live together, will be making their pro debuts in the heavyweight ranks.

UFC on FUEL TVPress Release – LOS ANGELES, CA – The following quotes are from tonight’s UFC 159 POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV. The show was hosted by Jay Glazer, with former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and middleweight Brian Stann offering analysis. Ariel Helwani conducted fighter interviews on-site.

UFC 159 POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV Analyst Brian Stann on Jones vs. Sonnen: “It was a very surprising game plan: Jon Jones executing his own takedowns and put the wrestler Chael Sonnen on his back. As Jon Jones said, he wanted to ‘Chael Sonnen’ Chael Sonnen.”

UFC 159 POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV Analyst Rashad Evans on Jon Jones’ victory: “I hate to admit it, he’s good. He’s really good. He went to work right away taking Chael down, and worked the ground and pound. His ground and pound is second to none. When he gets you down, it’s relentless pressure. It’s very hard to get up. He’s so long, inside closed guard, he’s really dangerous. Those elbows are long, pointy and dangerous.”

Stann on if he thought the stoppage was early: “I felt the stoppage was early. They tell you the fight will continue if you intelligently defend yourself.”

Evans on if the stoppage was early: “I don’t think it was too early. When a fighter covers up, you know what is going to happen. They’ll stop it.”

Jon Jones on how he injured his toe: “I don’t know. Late in the round, I was springing forward. I thought my foot got caught in a hole in the mat. When the fight was over, I looked down and I saw the blood. It’s all good. The big toe isn’t going to slow me down.”

Jones on if he would have continued to fight with the injured toe: “With my coaching staff, they wouldn’t allow me to dwell on it. They would have twisted it and sent me back out to fight. I just want to be a warrior.”

Jones on his relationship with Chael Sonnen after the fight: “I wish Chael Sonnen the best. I respect Chael and his team. Hopefully those guys have buried the hatchet. Chael’s a good guy at the end of the day. We’re going to have a lot of respect for each other.”

Chael Sonnen on comparing Jon Jones and Anderson Silva: “Jon is a lot better than I thought he was. To beat a guy is one thing. To beat a guy at his game is another. He’s the best fighter I’ve ever fought. He was stronger than Silva. The last thing I want to do is disparage Anderson Silva. It’s tough. I whipped him for 30 minutes. He whipped me for 30 seconds. I whipped Jon for zero seconds. He whipped me the entire fight. If you’re asking me for my opinion, Jon’s better.”

Evans on who Jones should fight next: “I would like to see him fight Daniel Cormier. I think he has what it takes to bring Jon Jones into deep waters. He has the ability to take him down, he has the ability to strike, and his stand up and transitions can definitely cause problems.”

Stann on who Jones should fight next: “I’d also like to see Alexander Gustafsson fight Jon Jones just for the striking aspect. I think it’d be an interesting fight being a guy with similar creativity and reach to Jon.”

UFC President Dana White on a possible Anderson Silva – Jon Jones fight: “Anderson called me tonight and wants a fight. I’m not going to tell you which fight he wants, but I’m going to get to work on it as soon as possible.”

Stann on Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher: “There was absolutely no groundwork on this fight. We expected them to be mostly on their feet, but we thought they would hit the mat at some point. It was Michael Bisping’s boxing that was the big difference in this fight. He just out-landed Alan. Belcher started to fade in rounds two and three.”

Michael Bisping on if he was expecting the win: “Without sounding arrogant, that was what I was planning for. Of course I believed I had the speed advantage. He’s a big-sized middleweight, but I thought I had the speed advantage going in and I think that was obvious tonight.”

Bisping on how he felt during the fight: “I have stenosis, which is a trapped nerve that causes atrophy and numbness in my right arm. It’s progressively getting worse and worse. I saw a surgeon about six weeks before this fight and they told me I needed surgery. There was no way I was going to pull out of this fight.”

Bisping on Alan Belcher: “It was a shame I caught him with my thumb there at the end. I apologize for that – it was a complete accident. Alan’s one hell of a performer and a good opponent. I have nothing but respect for Alan and I’m sure he’ll continue to have a great career.”

Evans on Roy Nelson’s knockout of Cheick Kongo: “Don’t you know if you’re fighting Roy Nelson? If you are, you know one thing. He’s got the right hand. Please tell me why he was circling to the right when you know that?”

Roy Nelson on if he knew he had knocked out Kongo: “I pretty much knew. When he dropped, I knew he recovers quickly, so I hit him again and then checked with the ref and knew he was out.”

Nelson on if he’s improved his conditioning training: “I don’t need conditioning when I only go one round.”

Evans on Phil Davis’ victory over Vinny Magalhaes: “This fight was all about Phil Davis’ improved striking. Vinny had to take him down, but he didn’t. Davis was just chipping away with his striking.”

Phil Davis on if his victory was more important after all the trash talking before the fight: “It’s as sweet as any victory. I’m glad he said what he said. It proved I’m in the top 10.”
