Yasuhiro Urushitani is one of the most respected mixed martial artists in the Flyweight division. He has fought all over the world and is a former Shooto Bantamweight Champion who is renowned for his accurate counter strikes and slick submissions. Since his debut in 2001, he has racked up a record of 20 wins, six losses, and six draws. He earned his ONE FC title shot by defeating Filipino standout Rey Docyogen in Manila on 31 May. He is set to face another former Shooto Bantamweight Champion in Shinichi Kojima to determine the king of the Asian Flyweight division.

Urushitani and Kojima have already fought each other twice, with both fights ending in a draw. This rubber match will crown a new world champion and determine the winner of their trilogy. Kojima is one of the best Flyweights in the world. He had a three-year undefeated streak while he was Shooto Bantamweight Champion and has been ranked as the best in the world in his weight class. He submitted Rey Docyogen in Kuala Lumpur on 2 February and has been eagerly awaiting his shot at the coveted ONE FC World Championship title.

Vincent Majid is a national Judo champion, a four-time submission grappling champion and is ranked top 10 in his weight class at combat sambo. Known as “Jack Hammer” because of the power with which he hits, Majid is tipped to score some spectacular stoppages in the ONE FC cage and this Indonesian giant will be looking to get his professional career off to the best possible start on 13 September to prove that he is a serious contender for the first ever ONE FC Light Heavyweight World Championship title.

Eugenio Tan was born and raised in Malaysia but is of mixed parentage with his father hailing from the mountains of Baguio in the Philippines. He has a strong base in boxing and has also developed his skills in Muay Thai. He has never been stopped or submitted and with three fights under his belt already, he is gaining a reputation as one of the best light heavyweights in Malaysia.

Stefer Rahardian is a BJJ phenomenon who has won numerous medals at submission grappling competitions and is already a familiar face on the podium having frequently claimed gold medals in grappling tournaments competing at well above his natural weight. He trains under Indonesia’s legendary grappling coach Niko Han, Indonesia’s first ever BJJ black belt at the vaunted Synergy gym in Jakarta.

Raymond Tan is a founding member of Penang Top Team and ranked as one of the best Bantamweights in Malaysia. He initially began training in Taekwondo before he moved into mixed martial arts as he grew older. He will be looking to use his long reach to devastating effect with crisp striking and signature kicks when he faces Stefer Rahardian on 13 September in Jakarta.

UFC on FUEL TV 10: Post-Fight Show Quotes From Chael Sonnen & Brian Stann

Press Release – LOS ANGELES, CA – The following quotes are from tonight’s UFC POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV for UFC ON FUEL TV 10: NOGUEIRA VS. WERDUM. UFC on FUEL TV 10 iiPress Release – LOS ANGELES, CA – The following quotes are from tonight’s UFC POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV for UFC ON FUEL TV 10: NOGUEIRA VS. WERDUM. The show was hosted by Jay Glazer, with UFC light heavyweight Chael Sonnen and UFC middleweight Brian Stann offering analysis. Karyn Bryant conducted fighter interviews on-site.

UFC POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV Analyst Chael Sonnen on Fabricio Werdum versus Minotauro Nogueira: “Big Nog was constantly moving forward in the first round. Werdum got him down. Then he saw the way that Big Nog protected himself on the ground and Werdum just moved faster.”

UFC POSTFIGHT SHOW ON FUEL TV Analyst Brian Stann on Werdum’s key to victory: “The key was Werdum was more mobile on the top when they were on the ground. He submitted the guy with the most submissions in history in the UFC. I thought Big Nog turned the fight at the end of the first round, but Werdum realized he had a better chance on the ground and took the fight back down. Big Nog’s mobility on the ground wasn’t the same as Werdum’s. Going into the second round, his corner told him to keep moving and said he had an advantage on the ground and take it back down.”

Stann on Werdum’s recent rise in the heavyweight division: “He has caught his groove and has the right people around him. He’s enjoying his time and that’s when a fighter is dangerous. He’s going out to put on a performance and that’s when he’ll do his best.”

Fabricio Werdum on how he feels after his win: “I feel great. Nogueira is a legend in the sport. He’s my good friend. I’m very happy with the win but he punches very hard. When I saw the opportunity to go on the ground, I got the armbar.”

Werdum on his submission: “My strategy was to fight with force. I got him on the ground because I had more possibilities on the ground. When I punched him, he went on his back and I got the armbar.”

Werdum on how close he thinks he is to a title shot: “I think if the UFC gave me the opportunity, for sure I’d bring a lot now. I think I’d wait and see who won the fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.”

Sonnen on who Werdum should fight next: “I want to see him take on the winner of Frank Mir and Josh Barnett.”

Stann on who Werdum should fight next: “I’d like to see the winner of Travis Browne versus Alistair Overeem. That’s an exciting matchup.”

Brian Stann on William Patolino vs. Leonardo Santos: “Patolino was showcasing his well-rounded skillset with takedowns and great stand up. He hammered Santos in the first round with some huge punches. In round two, Santos lands a takedown, moves to mount, and starts to hammer away. Patolino starts to get desperate and gets caught in an arm choke. When you get a seven-time world jiu-jitsu champion on top with that technique, there’s only one result.”

Sonnen on Santos’ age not being a factor: “We had a 33 year old take out a 21 year old. That’s inspiring, guys. It doesn’t usually go that way in combat sports. Age doesn’t matter. There’s no such thing as an advantage – it’s who wants it more. I thought Santos wore the younger opponent down and got the tap out.”

Leonardo Santos on how he feels after his win: “I am extremely happy. I don’t even know what to say. I feel like I’m hallucinating. I don’t even know what to do right now with what happened tonight.”

Stann breaks down Thiago Silva’s technique to get the victory: “Silva defended himself by keeping his chin down and hands up and absorbed what Feijao threw at him. Then Thiago backed him up and stood him up against the cage. Thiago threw two big punches and hit him on the back of the head behind the ear, and then connected up the middle to the chin and knocked him out.”

Silva on what he did to get the win: “I just followed my instructions from my coaches. They said, be patient and wait for the right moment. I was confident and listened to my coaches. I had a good opportunity to fight a good guy and I think everything is going well and I’m so happy.”

Sonnen on who Silva should fight next: “Silva isn’t in top ten, but he should be. Glover Teixeira is in top 10, but he hasn’t fought someone in the top ten. I’d like to see these two fight each other.”

Sonnen on Erick Silva defeating Jason High: “The last time an American wrestler came to Brazil against Silva, it was an upset. But Silva was ready for it this time and when this fight went to the ground, he submitted him. It’s a huge sign of character and a huge quality of a champion when they overcome what happened last time with this victory.”

Silva on what he learned after losing to Jon Fitch in his last fight: “I had to train for each area. I searched for good teachers good Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai and trained in every area.”

Evans on what he’s been working on for Dan Henderson at UFC 161: “The one thing I’ve been working on more than anything is becoming more confident and implementing what I’m good at. I seem to have a tendency to overthink what I’m doing when I’m out there competing. When you’re out there, the last thing you should be doing is thinking. You should just be reacting.”

Evans on staying away from Henderson’s big right punch: “I watch it over and over again. But I can’t be afraid to get hit by it. If you’re afraid of it, you’ll probably get hit by it harder than you think. I’ve fought a lot of guys with big right hands – Rampage, Chuck Liddell, so I know that I can get caught by a big right hand and keep fighting. I’m not going to make his big right hand a big deal. With that being said, I’m not going to circle to the wrong side. I’m going to avoid it as much as possible.”

‘Doomsday’ Howard Scores Another KO Win At CES MMA: New Blood

Press Release – LINCOLN, R.I. (June 7th, 2013) – After doing his best to avoid the constant questions for the past few months, John “Doomsday” Howard made his intentions clear after yet another dominant win Friday night at Twin River Casino. “I might piss some people off, but I want to fight for the [Ultimate […]

John Howard CES New Blood

Press Release – LINCOLN, R.I. (June 7th, 2013) – After doing his best to avoid the constant questions for the past few months, John “Doomsday” Howard made his intentions clear after yet another dominant win Friday night at Twin River Casino.

“I might piss some people off, but I want to fight for the [Ultimate Fighting Championship],” said the former UFC veteran from Boston. “I’ll fight for free on the Boston card [in August].”

Howard (20-7, 9 KOs) might get his chance after another knockout win in the main event of Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “New Blood” show Friday night. Howard made quick work of veteran Georgia middleweight Chris Woodall (12-4), scoring the knockout win with a series of unanswered strikes at the 2-minute, 14-second mark of the opening round. The win was the sixth in a row for Howard and fifth consecutive win by knockout since the UFC released him two years ago.

“John is the man in this weight class,” Woodall said. “When he gets back to the UFC, he’s going to dominate.”

The co-main event featured what might’ve been the final fight for Providence light heavyweight Greg “Ribz” Rebello (15-5), who suffered a tough, split-decision loss to Williamsport, Pa., native Lewis Rumsey (9-8), 27-30, 29-28, 28-29, and announced it would be his final fight after a stellar career in which he won 11 consecutive fights between 2011 and 2012.

“This is a young’s man game,” Rebello said. “I’ve got a baby daughter and a family at home. This is my last fight.”

Neither Rumsey or Rebello did much in terms of striking, but Rumsey earned the win by stuffing most of Rebello’s takedown attempts and preventing Rebello from establishing his presence. Fatigue was also a factor.

“I just hit a wall,” Rebello said. “I felt a little over-trained. At some point in the first round, I felt that adrenaline dump.”

On the undercard, Woonsocket, R.I., bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath improved to 5-1 and won his fifth consecutive fight in his toughest test to date, defeating Branford, Conn., veteran Blair Tugman (5-5) by unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-27, 29-28. Tugman tweaked Soukhamthath leading up to the fight by calling his opponent a “big fish in a small pond,” but Soukhamthath kept Tugman from taking the fight to the ground and dominated with his hands to win the fight easily despite a late surge by Tugman.

East Providence, R.I., lightweight Nate “The Snake” Andrews (5-0) also stepped up the level of competition, facing the tough veteran Jeff Anderson (11-8) of Lincoln, and won convincingly, choking out Anderson via rear-naked choke at 1:41 opening round while former UFC vet Chuck O’Neil (11-5) shook off an early scare from last-minute replacement Ralph Johnson (5-6) of Worcester, Mass., absorbing a big right hand to the start the fight, and eventually finished Johnson at the 1:30 mark of the opening round with a rear-naked choke. The Bridgewater, Mass., welterweight has now won back-to-back fights at Twin River after beating Keith Jeffrey in December.

Trained by veteran Scott Rehm, amateur welterweight standout Brian Sparrow (1-0) of Sandwich, Mass., put on an impressive performance in his professional debut, submitting fellow newcomer Ruben Ortiz (0-1) of Providence fifty-nine seconds into the third round via rear-naked choke. Ortiz, who trains out of former boxer Gary Balletto’s gym in Providence, hung in through two rounds with Sparrow, but Sparrow’s dominant reach – he entered the fight with a six-inch reach advantage – proved to be the difference, keeping Ortiz from using his boxing background to his advantage. Sparrow sunk in the choke early in the third and applied the pressure before Ortiz tapped.

Entering Friday having lost six consecutive fights, Williamsport, Pa., bantamweight Joshua Aarons (2-6) earned a huge win against hometown favorite Joe Reverdes (1-3) of Providence, submitting Reverdes via the guillotine at the 1:39 mark of the third round following two back-and-forth rounds. Aarons had youth on his side (27 years old, compared to Reverdes, who entered the cage at 39), but had a tough time dealing with Reverdes’ stand-up game until he took the fight to the canvas in the third round.

Making his highly-anticipated debut after a celebrated amateur career, bantamweight Sophanarith Am (1-0) of Braintree, Mass., rallied brilliantly against the gritty Carlos Hernandez (1-1) of Lynn, Mass., finishing Hernandez via rear-naked choke at the 2:25 mark of the third round. Hernandez looked strong in the first two rounds, but Am rebounded to earn the finish with his back against the wall in the third. Bombsquad veteran Ahsan Abdullah (4-3, 1 KO) of Cortland, N.Y., stopped Coventry, R.I., featherweight Shaun Marmas (5-5) at the 4:01 mark of the second round and Providence welterweight Eric Spicely (2-0) remained unbeaten after submitting newcomer Tundee Odumosu (0-1) of Johnston, R.I., via rear-naked choke at 1:41 of Round 1.

Ronnie MannPress Release – London, England (June 6, 2013) – Cage Warriors Fighting Championship is pleased to confirm that it has signed top English bantamweight Ronnie Mann.

The five-fight deal will see the 26-year-old compete exclusively for Cage Warriors over a minimum of 18 months, after CWFC paid a fee of $5,000 to Bellator to have Mann released from his contract with the promotion.

Cage Warriors 57 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on July 20 has been pencilled in for Mann’s CWFC debut, with the Cheltenham native keen to make his mark on Europe’s most competitive bantamweight division.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed with Cage Warriors,” said Mann. “It’s very flattering that they were willing to buy my contract from Bellator.

“Graham Boylan and all the guys at CWFC are great, and I’m very thankful for what they’ve done. In my opinion it’s the best promotion in Europe and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Currently ranked fourth in the UK, Mann accumulated a 3-3 record in Bellator after debuting for the promotion in April 2011. In his 28 professional bouts, Mann has been stopped just twice.

He added: “Bellator are a good promotion but I needed to be active again because I wasn’t fighting as regularly as I would have liked.

“I’m looking forward to having regular fights again, especially on the UK scene and in front the great fans we have here. I want to get my name out there again in Europe and hopefully work my way to a title shot. But for me, it’s one step at a time.”

Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan said: “I’d like to thank Bellator for their co-operation in this deal. I don’t like to see fighters not active in the prime of their careers and Bellator understood that, at his age, Ronnie needed to be busy.

“Like all of our fighters, Ronnie will have plenty of opportunities here at Cage Warriors. Our bantamweight division is extremely strong and Ronnie has got the ability to make a big impact.”

Canada_UFCPress Release – Ottawa, Ontario – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® today applauded the House of Commons for passing Bill S-209, an Act that removes the Criminal Code prohibition on professional mixed martial arts (MMA) in Canada. The bill, which passed the third and final reading today, will be enacted after receiving Royal Assent.

“This is a major development for the sport of mixed martial arts as we now have a consistent legislative framework for Canada and its provinces,” said UFC® Director of Canadian Operations Tom Wright. “The UFC thanks Senator Bob Runciman for spearheading this initiative and MP Massimo Pacetti for piloting this through the House of Commons. We’re also appreciative of MP Ryan Leef’s support throughout this entire process.”

Bill S-209 is an amendment to Section 83(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada, regulating prize fighting. The amendment clarifies the propriety of promoting mixed martial events throughout Canada. The current section 83 of the Criminal Code had not been updated since 1934.

To date, provincial governments have worked around the law to allow UFC events to take place. Since 2008, the UFC® has hosted a total of 12 Canadian events between four cities: Montreal (six), Toronto (three), Vancouver (two) and Calgary (one). Winnipeg will soon become the UFC’s fifth Canadian city as the MTS Centre hosts the sold out UFC® 161: EVANS VS. HENDERSON on June 15 while Toronto receives its fourth event with UFC® 165 at Air Canada Centre on September 21.

Currently, MMA is sanctioned at a provincial level in British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, while it has been sanctioned on a municipal level within Alberta, New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories. The UFC’s goal is to have the sport sanctioned and regulated in all 10 provinces and three territories.
