M-1 Global

M-1 Global’s Vadim Finkelstein is pulling no punches in telling both Strikeforce and the MMA world that his number one fighter, Fedor Emelianenko is ready and will fight in either October or November, regardless of what Scott Coker(CEO of Strikeforce) wants. Finkelstein certainly took a very direct approach when talking to LowKick about a potential Fedor Vs. Werdum fight as opposed to Fedor Vs. Overeem:

“We are ready to fight against anyone, but everyone agrees that the most interesting fight right now is the rematch against Fabricio Werdum. We have one fight left on our contract, so if Strikeforce want to extend it – they should listen to our opinion. Fedor will fight again sometime between October and November. I’ll repeat that again: the only thing fans want to see is Fedor vs Werdum II. Fabricio himself said that he would like to rematch Fedor in Russia. It’s great, but this fight will not happen in Russia…. I can really feel that the rating makers on the US websites really wanted Fedor Emelianenko to suffer from his first “real” defeat. They now have Fedor on the Third Place, and the first is Brock Lesnar. Question: Who’s Brock Lesnar? He has only five professional fights, and one defeat. He is a marketable fighter because of his WWE past. They sell-out 60,000 stadiums for that crap, which no one would even consider watching in Russia. That’s why Brock Lesnar is popular. As for Fedor, he is not a marketable fighter – he’s just the best. He destroyed everyone during 10 years. He has 31 victories.”

Very direct words indeed, and you gotta love the he’s just the best line. Seems like M-1 is turning up the heat for a rematch and an attempt to clear the blemish from Fedor’s record.

Georges St. Pierre Thinks That Koscheck Is Going To Be The Toughest Challenge.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has looked unstopable in his last 7 fights but he faces, what is in his mind, the toughest challenge of his fight career when he rematches with Josh Koscheck after their stint on TUF. GSP was very complimentary when speaking of his opponent, something you can’t really expect to be reciprocated by a usually trash talking Kos, when he spoke to Tapology:

It’s going to be the toughest challenge. He’s very skilled and he’s the kind of fighter that is very well rounded. A lot of the guys that I have fought are good on the ground or on the feet, but they have holes in their game. Koscheck is like me; he’s not the best striker, not the best wrestler, not the best Jiu-Jitsu guy, but he can do it all so it’s going to be interesting. You’re going to see a mix of different things; it’s going to be good.

The interview is quite interest and a great read on a variety of topics related to GSP and his view on how traditional martial arts play into MMA today. Click here to check it out.

With UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen up next on the schedule, it’s interesting to get a point of view from UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre on how UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva performed in his last fight against Demian Maia. Pierre, as is usual for him, chooses not to talk to negatively about Silva, as he answered the questions for Tapology:

You know, it’s a question of style, you know what I mean? I think it was up to the other guy to put on more pressure than Anderson Silva. For sure Silva was tired—he did a lot of fakes and stuff like that—but I don’t know what happened. For the first two rounds I think it was a great display of Muay Thai and Capoeira, but I heard he said some bad things in the fourth round and that was not nice. I don’t know what happened between these two guys before, but for me it’s not my style to talk like this.

GSP will be out of the Octagon until the end of the upcoming season of TUF, and then he will face opposing coach and number one contender Josh Koscheck. UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen will take place August 7 and most MMA fans are hopeful for a good showing from The Spider.

Alistair Overeem has issued a statement to MMA Fighting, letting his fans know that he will not be fighting on the DREAM.15 card, contrary to reports.

“I have heard numerous rumors about me fighting at Dream on July 10. I want to give my side of the story before speculation arises…After my Brett Rogers fight on May 15, I decided to take time off and do media appearances — MMA expo in Canada, E3 expo, Strikeforce events — and enjoy some time off with my family. I knew Dream wanted me on the show, but I didn’t want to go back in training preparation. Then, they offered me a fight against Andrei Arlovski for the Dream heavyweight title. As I have said on occasions, fighting for a belt means something more, and I wanted that Dream title so much that So as a result, I agreed to lay off my media and holiday plans, and went back to training.

“During my training I found out that Andrei Arlovski was not going to be my opponent, and they changed opponents numerous times. I’ve heard names like Tim Sylvia and Minowa. At one point, I received notice that they had found a opponent but that the Dream heavyweight title was not on the line anymore. With all the changes and the title fight no longer a possibility, I simply had to turn down the opportunity. “

There’s plenty more of what Overeem said, just check it out on MMAFighting.com. It’s very interesting to see how things have fallen out and that Overeem actually takes responsibility for verbally agreeing but not signing any contracts. Wonder how Rodriguez feels about the whole thing?

Despite his recent loss to Fabricio Werdum, heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko is still considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. It makes it hard for casual MMA fans to understand why he isn’t in the UFC, considered to be the highest level of the sport we love. There’s been talk from both UFC president Dana White and Fedor’s management M-1 Global as to why the two sides have not met but Fedor addressed the situation directly in a recent spread with Tatame:

If Dana White really wanted me in UFC, I would have been in UFC by now. Dana is the guy who speaks more than he actually does

There’s an entire interview in July’s issue of Tatame, and it sounds like an interesting piece as Fedor discusses Junior Dos Santos, Shogun, and the UFC.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that UFC middleweight Michael Bisping will eiher fight Yoshihiro Akiyama or Vitor Belfort at UFC 120 in October. Also on the card is fellow Brit Dan Hardy who is set to face Carlos Condit, the first time Hardy will fight after his loss to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

With Sexyama taking the loss to Chris Leben, there’s a great chance that it will be Vitor Belfort who will take on the up and down Bisping, and look for Vegas line’s to reflect that Bisping would enter the fight as a serious underdog. However Belfort is looking to have a good outing after returning from elbow surgery, and has long been thought of as a legitimate threat to middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.
