HOUSTON — On Saturday night, Muhammed Lawal will look to successfully defend his Strikeforce light heavyweight title for the very first time against Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante. This will mark just the eighth pro fight in Lawal’s career, and while the sky appears to be the limit for the former Oklahoma State University wrestling star, one wonders how will he preform with the bulls-eye on his back for the first time.

In our Strikeforce: Houston preview, Ben Fowlkes and I answer that question and look at the rest of the storylines heading into Saturday night’s card.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal claims that he should be the underdog against Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante in his first Strikeforce light-heavyweight championship defense. It is one of the oldest self-motivational ploys in the book; convince yourself you’re underrated with the intention of proving otherwise.

But few are buying what Lawal’s selling. The undefeated 7-0 champ is a massive favorite across the oddsmakers’s universe, and most expect him to walk away with the belt.

Still, it’s a match filled with potential pitfalls for the champ, so what’s his likely path to victory during Saturday’s Strikeforce: Houston show, and what’s Cavalcante’s best chance at the upset?

HOUSTON – If today’s Strikeforce: Houston pre-fight press conference had a theme, that theme was ‘respect.’ It made for a calm, congenial, and somewhat boring atmosphere, but perhaps that’s just what happens when all eight fighters on the televised portion of the card like one another too much.

Even defending Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal, who usually likes some trash talk to go along with his pre-fight press obligations, explained that he just couldn’t work up the same animosity toward new challenger Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante that he had for Gegard Mousasi in his last fight.

“I respect Feijao,” said Lawal. “We’ve trained with some of the same people. He’s never questioned my character like Mousasi did. Mousasi was quick to go on record saying that I’m full of myself and I’m this and I’m that. Me and Feijao, we don’t need to do that. We’ll do that Saturday. We’ll fight Saturday and have fun.”

Muhammed Lawal will walk into the Strikeforce cage on Aug. 21 as the promotion’s light-heavyweight champion, and with the odds strongly suggesting a successful title defense. But the man they call “King Mo” disagrees with the handicappers that have made him as much as a 5-to-1 favorite over Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

“If anyone should be a favorite, it should be ‘Feijao,'” he said on a Monday conference call. “He has a name, he’s been fighting longer than me. I remember watching him on Showtime, in Elite XC and in the IFL. He should be the favorite. Due to marketing, people see me as the favorite. He’s the favorite, I’m the underdog even though I’m the champ.”
