Rampage Jackson Won’t Be Surprised

Wanderlei Silva recently shared his thoughts on his legendary knockout victory over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at Pride 28. In a new podcast documentary on Silva by MMA TRUFAN, he recalled how he felt when he first saw Jackson unconscious on the ropes.

“When I have this movement, it’s like a martial art, art. Like you paint something or make a sculpture,” Silva said. “Somebody can watch this, like a 1000 years (from now) in Pride from right now and say, ‘Hey this is good, this is a martial art.’”

Silva shared the significance of this fight in regards to his legacy.

“When I hit him in the face, I feel something on the knee. When I look at him on the ropes and all the blood go out and the people scream very loud. That moment for me be one of the best (moments) of my career. Because this (is) a blast kick and I think it’s one of my greatest knockouts ever.”

Former Pride Vice President Jerry Millen was in attendance for the fight and shared his thoughts.

“I was sitting ringside for the Quinton Jackson fight when Wanderlei hit him with those knees and sent Quinton through the ropes and blood just blew out of Quinton’s face.”

Silva and Jackson’s Rivalry

The rivalry between Silva and Jackson began at Pride 25 in 2003. After Jackson’s knockout win over Kevin Randleman, he challenged Silva who was sitting ringside. Silva climbed into the ring to accept the challenge and shoved Rampage, which led to a melee in the ring.

Later that year, Silva and Jackson faced each other in the finals of the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix 2003. Silva went on to stop Jackson via technical knockout. Their rematch would be a year later at Pride 28.

Sports Illustrated called Wanderlei’s second knockout over Rampage the 2004 Knockout of the Decade. Wanderlei finished his career with twenty-seven knockouts including brutal finishes over Kazushi Sakuraba, Keith Jardine and Brian Stann. However, he considers his second knockout over Rampage one of the greatest of his career.

There was a lot of talk coming out of Bellator 237 in Japan this past weekend suggesting that the fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was fixed.

Many watching didn’t believe that the punch Emelianenko landed on Jackson, that subsequently ended the fight, landed cleanly, and therefore, believed Jackson simply took a dive. Of course, there are also those who argue that the finish was a legitimate one, and even the slightest of touches, especially at heavyweight, can be deadly.

Jackson has now offered his take on the situation. Taking to his Instagram page, Jackson responded to those who believe he took a dive against the Russian legend, saying he’d never take part in a fixed fight.

“When that bag secured and the ladies waiting back in the room ??????? @MKingRingo
@EntangledEntertainment (I’ll never do a fixed fight Fador won fair,i have to get my weight down, that loss was on me.. non fighters need to ?) much love to my real fans, you win some lose some”

Shortly after the fight, Jackson attributed his poor performance to his weight, claiming he felt sluggish at heavyweight and plans to cut back down to light heavyweight for his next fight. It will be interesting to see how much Jackson’s performance improves if he returns to the division in which he once reigned as champion in the UFC.

What did you think of the finish between Jackson and Emelianenko?

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson has vowed to return to light-heavyweight after
losing via first round knockout to Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator 237. The Russian
heavyweight landed a perfect punch to send ‘Rampage’ face first to the canvas at
the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

The 41-year-old enjoyed his best days at 205lbs and believes he can get back to that weight. ‘Rampage’ came in at a career high 265lbs for his fight against ‘The Last Emporer’ and it clearly hampered him in the fight. The former UFC champion looked slow and out of shape. He took his first KO loss in more than 14 years. Reflecting on his loss on social media Jackson said.

“Sorry guys we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, but you know what, I knew one of us was going to get knocked out,” Jackson said. “But I didn’t know it was going to be (expletive) me. But you know what? I ain’t mad, though. You win some, you lose some. You get paid for all. Y’all remember that.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Despite suffering such a tough loss ‘Rampage’ was in good spirits and determined
to come back better than ever. The American admitted he felt like a ‘hippopotamus’
during the fight and said this would be his last fight at heavyweight.

“It’s all good – I’m not in a bad mood. I just know what I got
to do. I got to get my damn weight down. I felt like a hippopotamus out there.
But that’s my fault. No excuses. It’s all right. I’ll be back. But I ain’t
coming back at heavyweight. I’ve got to lose this weight.”

Can Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson still make
205lbs at 41-years-old?
