Lightweights Alexander Hernandez and Renato Moicano will both be aiming to secure back-to-back wins when they meet at UFC 271.

MMA JUNKIE was the first to report the matchup, which will take place February 12 at a yet-to-be-announced location.

Hernandez (13-4) will go into the bout on the back of a sensational first-round KO of Mike Breeden earlier this month. The 29-year-old has been hot and cold in the UFC since defeating Beneil Dariush on debut in 2018. He followed that win up with one over Olivier Aubin-Mercier, before losing to Donald Cerrone via TKO in his next fight. Including that crushing defeat, Hernandez has lost half of his last six fights.

Moicano (15-4-1) got back to winning ways in June by defeating Jai Herbert via second-round rear-naked choke. The former 145-pounder had stepped up to the lightweight division in March last year, earning a 44-second submission victory over Damir Hadzovic. In December, Moicano lost to Rafael Fiziev via first-round KOan outcome that the Brazilian later protested as an early stoppage.

Renato Moicano is targeting a ranked opponent next.

Moicano returned to the win column with an impressive and dominant victory over Jai Herbert at UFC Vegas 30 last night. Dominating the Briton on the ground, Moicano eventually sunk in the rear naked choke in the second round to get the tap and he was pleased to say the least.

“I felt like I had to go out strong and get a submission or a finish,” he said afterward (via MMA Junkie). “That was what I trained to do and that’s what I did, fortunately. … I was just so happy he tapped.

“I don’t even know how to explain it, what it’s like to win a fight. To me, it’s the best feeling in the world and I’m going to be feeling like this one week from now. I’m really happy.”

Now 2-1 at lightweight, the former featherweight contender wants to break into the top 15 at 155 pounds. He has two specific names in mind as well.

“My next fight will be against a top 15 (opponent), for sure,” Moicano added. “I keep asking the UFC for the best. I want the best names they can give me, and that’s what I’m looking for – guys like Islam Makhachev, (Gregor) Gillespie, all those guys.

“The best wrestler, the best striker – it’s even better for me. I want to fight the best.”

Whether he gets those names remains to be seen, but Moicano is definitely a fighter to be reckoned with at lightweight.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Renato Moicano has handed former Cage Warriors lightweight champion, Jai Herbert his second consecutive loss since his transition to the UFC — in the form of a second round rear-naked choke at UFC Vegas 30 to open the main card.

Utilising his elite grappling and wrestling early in the bout, Moicano, who himself was returning from a big knockout loss to the rising, Rafael Fiziev at UFC 256 last December, managed to take Herbert’s back with seconds remaining in the second round, following a prolonged beating and bloodying of Herbert in the fourth minute.

Locking his hands and finding his forearm under the neck of the former Cage Warriors 155lbs best, Herbert, Moicano handed the British fighter his second straight loss, following a damaging knockout defeat to his compatriot, Francisco Trinaldo on ‘Fight Island’ last year.

Below, catch the highlights from Moicano’s submission stoppage over Herbert.
