Rodtang Smashes Through Jacob Smith, Vows to Reclaim Flyweight Title After Weight Miss - ONE 169 Highlights

Rodtang Jitmuangnon scored another dominant victory against British standout Jacob Smith on Friday night in the ONE 169 co-main event.

After seemingly fighting the first round on autopilot, Rodtang started to pick things up in the second, showing flashes of his larger-than-life personality. Unfortunately, that typically spells disaster for his opponents.

Like their first fight in May 2022, Smith was more than willing to engage with ‘The Iron Man’ and go toe-to-toe, but that decision cost him big in the third round when Rodtang landed a nasty elbow near Smith’s right eye that immediately busted the Brit open and had him quickly retreating. Smith ultimately made it out of the round, but by then, the damage was done.

Things got a little chippy between the two with Smith and the Thai seemingly headbutting one another at one point in the fourth. In a rather hilarious moment, ‘The Iron Man’ put Smith on the mat with a leg kick and then proceeded to kiss him on the top of the head before the fight resumed.

Things sort of went that way during the championship rounds with Rodtang just out there dominating his opponent and having fun every step of the way. To Smith’s credit, he went the full 15 minutes with Rodtang, but in the end, it was another decisive decision victory for the Thai superstar.

Official Result: Rodtang def. Jacob Smith via unanimous decision.

Unfortunately, Rodtang will not leave Lumpinee Stadium with the ONE flyweight Muay Thai world title. ‘The Iron Man’ failed to meet the weight and hydration requirements for their ONE 169 co-main event, meaning only Smith was eligible to win the belt.

Speaking with Mitch Chilson in the ring, ‘The Iron Man’ made it clear that reclaiming the ONE flyweight Muay Thai title is a top priority, but that will come down to whether or not ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong decides to give him that opportunity.

Rodtang Misses Weight, Loses Title

Superstar Muay Thai fighter Rodtang Jitmuangnon has been stripped of his ONE Championship title due to being unable to make hydration and weight.

Rodtang Misses Weight, Loses Title

Hosted at Lumpinee Stadium, in Bangkok, Thailand, ONE 169 was set to go down with three title matches. A heavyweight MMA championship between Anatoly Malykhin and “Reug Reug” Oumar Kane, a strawweight kickboxing title fight with Jackie Buntan and Anissa Meksen, plus a flyweight Muay Thai world championship match between Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Jacob Smith.

Making weight and hydration has been a struggle for “The Iron Man” in the past, but in more recent fights he seemed to have it under control.

Rodtang and Jacob Smith have agreed on fighting at a 135.5 lbs catchweight.

As reported by Nicolas Atkin:

“Rodtang has lost his ONE Championship flyweight Muay Thai title on the scale after missing weight for ONE 169. Understand Jacob Smith has accepted a catchweight of 135.5lbs so the fight will go ahead, but only Smith can win the vacant belt. Smith will also receive a percentage of Rodtang’s 10 million baht purse.”

The Iron Man” and the UK-born Jacob Smith fought years prior with the Thai-born Rodtang dominating the matchup. On November 8, at ONE 169, Smith was coming for revenge. The two will still fight but a title will not be on the line and Jitmuangnon has been stripped due to a weight miss.

K-1 Legend Takeru Faces Off with Rodtang Following 2nd Round Comeback KO - ONE Friday Fights 81 Highlights

K-1 legend Takeru Segawa scored his first win under the ONE Championship banner in spectacular fashion on Friday.

After coming up short in a five-round war against two-division ONE world champion Superlek in January, ‘The Natural Born Crusher’ stepped into the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand for a clash with Burmese knockout artist Thant Zin at ONE Friday Fights 81.

In the opening round, Thant appeared to be in complete control, catching Takeru early with his patented right hand and even sitting down the former three-division K-1 king in the closing seconds of the first round.

Takeru

However, things took a turn 60 seconds into the second stanza when Takeru started to let his hands go and light up the 19-year-old prospect out of Myanmar. Up against the ropes, the Japanese star landed a nasty front kick to the body that folded Thant and put him on the canvas. Thant answered the referee’s count, but a follow-up right-left combination from Takeru put him down for the count moments later.

Takeru

Official Result: Takeru Segawa def. Thant Zin via KO (strikes) at 2:47 of Round 2.

Takeru

Immediately following the fight, ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion Rodtang Jitumuangnon stepped inside the ring for a heated face-off with Takeru, teasing a long-awaited clash between the two combat sports icons.

Rodtang Confident Jonathan Haggerty vs. Superlek ends in knockout: “Number one in Muay Thai and kickboxing”

Superlek Rodtang jonathan haggerty ONE 168

The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon has faced both Jonathan Haggerty and Superlek Kiatmoo9 in Muay Thai. The Thai-born striker offers his prediction on the ONE 168 Muay Thai title match upcoming on September 6.

Rodtang on Haggerty vs. Superlek

The General’ Jonathan Haggerty is an English-born striker who has grown up fighting in ONE Championship. Last year, in the first round, he knocked out the legendary Nong-O Hama to capture gold in Muay Thai. Next, he knocked out Fabricio Andrade to earn the kickboxing world title. Most recently, he defended his Muay Thai crown via TKO against Felipe Lobo. Despite early struggles in ONE, it’s been smooth sailing since going up in weight.

‘The Kicking Machine’ Superlek Kiatmoo9, of Thailand, is carving out a legendary legacy in Muay Thai. Throughout his career, the top pound-for-pound athlete has earned titles in True4U, WBC, Lumpinee Stadium, and ONE Championship.

Superlek

Between Muay Thai and kickboxing, Superlek is on an impressive 12-fight win streak with notable wins over Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon, K-1 Champion Takeru Segawa, kickboxing champion Daniel Puertas Gallardo, and the ultra-talented Panpayak Jitmuangnon, among others.

Now, Superlek is going up in weight to challenge the two-sport king Haggerty for his Muay Thai crown. Rodtang offered his prediction for the title fight going down at ONE 168. He said:

“Haggerty’s strength is he has been fighting in this division for a long time. He can punch very hard and violently. Superlek’s strengths are his powerful kicks and exceptional defensive abilities. I’ve never seen anyone that can knock Superlek out before.

“I’m confident that we’re going to see an exciting fight, full of thrills every second. I’m looking forward to watching this fight. Both are number one in Muay Thai and kickboxing. No matter who they fight, that fight is a must-see.

“It has a high chance to end with a KO.”

Fans React to Rodtang’s Newest Booking “Piss poor matchmaking once again”

Rodtang ONE 169

The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon has his next booking to defend his Muay Thai world title, and fans are not impressed. Later this year at ONE 169 hosted in Atlanta, USA, ONE Championship paired the Muay Thai champion against Jacob Smith.

Fans laugh at Rodtang vs. Jacob Smith

The Thai-born Rodtang has been a superstar for ONE Championship. The Muay Thai champion is popular on social media and has over 270 victories. Many of his recent fights have been brought into question as they are largely unworthy of facing a champion in Muay Thai. The Jacob Smith fight is one more to add to this list and fans are unhappy.

Some of the recent opponents of ‘The Iron Man’ include the debuting Edgar Tabares, winless in ONE Jiduo Yibu, lower weight class fighters such as Joseph Lasiri and Danial Williams, plus a loss to Superlek Kiatmoo9. Now, he has been paired against the UK-born Smith, an opponent ‘The Iron Man’ already defeated in a dominant fight years ago. In his most recent fight, Smith is coming off of a loss and has only had a single victory in ONE since signing with the organization three years ago. Fans let ONE know their discontent with this matchup.

MuayThaiJME on Twitter said:

“Honestly not sure how anyone can like Rodtang Hitting new lows even I didn’t think were imaginable As much as I like Jacob, he was embarrassed by Rodtang last time out, he’s coming off a loss, & that loss was to the guy Rodtang just beat Piss poor matchmaking once again Shameful.”

RISE fighter Jay Snoddon added:

“I like Jacob but this match literally makes zero sense. Jacob gets merked by Rodtang, then loses to Denis Puric who fights Rodtang and loses in Kickboxing. Now, Jacob for whatever reason gets a title shot?!?”

CombatCr said:

“A truly pathetic slice of matchmaking, a fight that absolutely no one needs to see. Rodtang is a fighter not even worth paying attention to while he’s in fights like this (that we’ve already seen, and do not need to see again at all) while there are so many better options.”

Thesilverwolfgg added:

“Just why? Rodtang easily beat Smith last time and Smith hasn’t done anything to earn this. All the title fights in ATL are beyond lopsided. Man @ONEChampionship thinks we’re really stupid out here in the west.”

On Instagram, _thomasdonnelly said:

“He only wants the easy fights? Chatri needs to stop this cherry picking bullshit”

Rodtang vs. Jacob Smith is not a match that the fight community is impressed with but it is the co-main event at ONE 169.

A staggering fourth title fight has been added to ONE Championship’s debut in Atlanta and it features one of their biggest stars, Rodtang Jitumuagnon.

As the biggest name in Muay Thai today, “The Iron Man” has become a social media sensation because of his always entertaining fighting style.

Having featured on ONE Championship’s debut event in the United States last year (ONE Fight Night 10 in Denver), he’s now set to return to the US in November as reported by Sports Illustrated.

The ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion will be putting his belt on the line in a rematch with England’s Jacob Smith at the State Farm Arena on November 8.

They last met back in May of 2022 where Rodtang secured a unanimous decision win to advance in the flyweight Muay Thai Grand Prix.

The Thai star returned to action in June where he went three rounds with Denis Puric in a kickboxing bout that delivered one of the best fights of the year so far in ONE Championship.

He last defended his world championship back in November of 2022 where he convincingly beat strawweight champion Joseph Lasiri over five rounds.

This now makes for a total of four world championship fights for Atlanta, two in MMA and two in Muay Thai.

Three-division champion Anatoly Malykhin will be defending his heavyweight title against Oumar “Reug Reug” Kane in the main event whilst two-weight king Christian Lee makes his long-awaited return to defend his lightweight crown against Alibeg Rasulov.

The other title fight sees Tawanchai defend his ONE featherweight Muay Thai world championship against Jo Nattawut in a trilogy fight between the two Thai strikers.

November 8 has also been rumoured to feature a boxing match between former UFC rivals Rashad Evans and ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
