Dana White announced the winner of BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch will get the next Welterweight title-shot… which goes to show you how far ahead GSP is from the rest of the fighters in his division. The next contender is either the guy who is currently 1-1 as a Welterweight or the guy he’s already beaten before and is on a 5 fight Unanimous Decision win-streak over middle of the pack guys, which include 2 fighters dropped by the UFC (Akihiro Gono and Ben Saunders)… of course, I am assuming that St. Pierre will be beating Jake Shields. Silly me to jump to conclusions.

Ryan Couture, who won his pro-debut fight in Strikeforce Challengers 10 over the summer via triangle choke in 1:15 in the first round had been tapped for the Strikeforce Challengers 12 card on November 19th. Couture was back in the Xtreme Couture gym training when he was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a serious staph infection in his leg as seen in the picture above.

The staph infection forced Couture to be hospitalized and undergo surgery to relieve the infection. Couture suffered a few complications after the surgery which put him briefly back in the hospital. But the 28 year-old who gained his spirit from his father, UFC Hall-of-Famer, Randy Couture, is ready to return to the cage for Strikeforce Challengers 14 against Lee Higgins.

Both father and son can be found training at the gym these days, as Randy Couture is booked to face Lyoto Machida at UFC 129. The younger Couture will face Higgins on February 14 in Austin, Texas. More appetizing pics of his staph infection below:

Strikeforce has a lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, whose only fight in 2010 was a win over the lightweight champion of Dream, Shinya Aoki, and who keeps talking about his desire to fight the lightweight champion of Bellator, Eddie Alvarez. So doesn’t Strikeforce have any of its own lightweights for its champion to fight?

No, not really. At least not right now, where the best fight for Melendez really would be outside the organization. But as we look at the state of the Strikeforce lightweights below, we’ll examine whether the promotion can beef up its lightweight roster and make bigger things happen in 2011.
