A Strikeforce 135-pound match pitting two of MMA’s top female stars is being targeted for a July 22 Challengers Series card, MMA Fighting has learned.

Sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that a bout pitting former champion Sarah Kaufman against Liz Carmouche is in the works, and has been verbally agreed to.

The 25-year-old Kaufman hasn’t fought in Strikeforce since losing the belt to Marloes Coenen back in October 2010. Afterward, she took a fight in a Canadian promotion to stay active, defeating Megumi Yabushita via TKO.

Carmouche, meanwhile, is coming off a strong performance in her first real time in the Strikeforce spotlight. Though she ultimately lost in the fourth round due to a triangle submission, Carmouche dominated champ Coenen for most of their title bout in March. Had Carmouche won, it would have been considered one of the biggest upsets in women’s MMA history. Though Carmouche came in undefeated at 5-0 and had won her only prior Strikeforce fight, she had taken the fight on short notice, replacing the injured Miesha Tate. She had less than two weeks to prepare for the fight.

Carmouche is now 5-1, while Kaufman boasts a 13-1 record.

Strikeforce Challengers 17 will be the promotion’s first-ever event in Las Vegas. It takes place at The Pearl at The Palms. Strikeforce just announced the event last week, and so far only one other fight is known, the main event matching Roger Bowling against Bobby Voelker in the rubber match of their trilogy.

Zuffa-Strikeforce Deal Could Mean Uncertain Future for Women’s MMA

Of all the Strikeforce fighters who are struggling to figure out what the sale of their employer to its biggest rival will mean for them, it’s the women on the roster who are in perhaps the most precarious position.

Despite UFC president Dana White’s assurances that it’s “business as usual” for Strikeforce after being purchased by Zuffa, the female fighters now find themselves working for a company that is owned in part by a man who isn’t a big fan of what they bring to the table. As you can imagine, it’s a situation that makes some of them very nervous about the future of women’s MMA in general, as well as for their own jobs.

“I am a little worried,” said 135-pound Strikeforce fighter Miesha Tate. “I just don’t know what’s going to happen. Now we’re all under Zuffa, and the one man who’s the big voice there can’t appreciate women’s fighting.”

I can’t help but think that maybe, as a child, Nick Diaz saw one too many after-school specials about bullying and came away with the wrong message. Somehow, somewhere in the spooky corridors of his mind, the notion took route that you can’t allow yourself to respect anyone until after you’ve beaten them in a fight.

For instance, look at the way he was immediately capable of acting like a civil human being to KJ Noons after winning Saturday night’s bout. The same was true when he fought Frank Shamrock. Before that fight he wouldn’t even shake Shamrock’s hand, opting instead to give him the finger when Frank offered (though in fairness, in certain parts of Stockton the bird is one of those all-purpose gestures).

My point is, if the only way Diaz can treat someone with the respect he’d like for himself is to beat them up, he should probably go ahead and get in the cage with Jason “Mayhem” Miller. This stuff about throwing water bottles at him in the hallway of the HP Pavillion and trying to fight him when neither of them is getting paid, that’s bush league stuff. Not only is it unprofessional, it’s financially unsound.

Coenen put on a good show throughout, doing well in the stand-up game in the early going and then finishing the fight with one of her trademark submissions from her back. Coenen was already prepared to promote her next fight afterward, saying to Strikeforce’s No. 1 contender, Miesha Tate, “Let’s get it on.”
