Israel Adesanya claims betl never mattered to him fight just for fun after UFC 293

Former two-time undisputed middleweight champion has claimed he will not pout his efforts toward recapturing the divisional crown, and striking himself as a three-time gold holder, however, stresses he is now just fighting “fun fun” after his loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 earlier this month.

Adesanya, a two-time undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, headlined the promotion’s return ‘Down Under’ to Sydney, Australia earlier this month, slumping to his second title loss in less than a year, as he dropped a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Sean Strickland.

Having lost the middleweight championship back in November of last year to a fifth round rallying TKO defeat to Brazilian rival, Alex Pereira at Madison Square Garden, City Kickboxing ace, Adesanya reclaimed the title with an April win over the former – stopping him with a second round KO in Miami, Florida.

Israel Adesanya breaks silence after UFC 293 title loss earlier this month

However, pegged to compete for middleweight spoils in an immediate championship rematch with Strickland by UFC CEO, Dana White in the immediate aftermath of his loss, Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya has claimed he will now only compete “for fun” as he plots a third title ascension.

“The belts never mattered to me,” Israel Adesanya said on his official YouTube channel. “I mean, it does obviously, but how many times have I said it’s just a fancy tiara that brings more money and this and that, rah, rah, rah.”

“That belt is just a nice accessory,” Israel Adesanya explained. “I’ve already got belts, I have many belts. I’m just going to do it again. Just for for – just for fun.”

Reflecting on his shocking upset loss to Covina native, Strickland at UFC 293, Adesanya described the bout as a “bad dream” – claiming he was unable to set up any of his offensive action throughout the five round back-and-forth.

Israel Adesanya claims UFC 293 title loss to Sean Strickland was a "bad dream"

Israel Adesanya has finally opened up about his shocking loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293.

On September 9, ‘The Last Stylebender’ stepped into his latest title defense as a massive 7-to-1 favorite. 25 minutes later, Israel Adesanya was understandably dejected after delivering a flat performance that resulted in Sean Strickland securing his first world title. Eager to unravel the mystery of what went wrong, fans were waiting with bated breath to hear from Adesanya following the loss. Instead, the ‘Stylebender’ left his coach, Eugene Bareman to field questions on his behalf at the post-fight press conference.

More than a week removed from the upset, Israel Adesanya shed some light on his mindset following the bout and what went wrong in an interview on the two-time titleholder’s YouTube channel.

“Like a bad dream,” Adesanya said when asked about how he felt following the defeat. “One of those where you, not even a nightmare. A nightmare is like, ‘Oh sh*t. F*ck.’ A nightmare, you’re scared. I was just like, you try to hit the guy, and it just felt like noodle arms. Like, ‘What the f*ck.’ It just felt like a bad dream.

“Feeling it and watching it were completely different. I called Eugene (Bareman) right after and we talked and the same thing. We’re quietly confident.”

Continuing to speak about that night, Israel Adesanya gave credit where credit was due, complimenting Sean Strickland’s game plan and his ability to switch gears on the fly. Something he was unable to do.

“I just wasn’t able to get my rhythm because of his pressure,” Adesanya said. “He was right there constantly. Whenever I was setting him up, because he was right there, his coach would help him out, and I would be like, ‘F*ck.’ Good game plan from them, but also for me, I wasn’t able to adjust on the fly. It was his night. It was his night and yeah, he got it done. I made another dream come true.”

What Comes Next for Israel Adesanya?

As for what comes next, Israel Adesanya has every intention of getting back inside the Octagon and having some fun whether it’s for a title or not.

“We’ll see,” Adesanya said on a return. “No, the belt has never mattered to me. How many times have I said it’s just a fancy tiara? The belt is just a nice accessory. I already got belts. I got many belts. I’m going to do it again just for fun, just for fun.”

With two title losses in less than a year, fans are seemingly ready to see some new blood compete for the middleweight title. Sean Strickland’s coach, Eric Nicksick, suggested ‘Tarzan’ could be back in action as early as December for a potential clash with South African standout Dricus Du Plessis. That’s assuming the UFC doesn’t book a rematch between Strickland and ‘The Last Stylebender.’

If Adesanya does not secure another opportunity to reclaim the middleweight title, who would you like to see him fight in his next outing?

Newly-minted undisputed middleweight champion, Sean Strickland has shockingly revealed that following his stunning UFC 293 title victory against rival, Israel Adesanya earlier this month – he somehow managed to drink a cup of his own urine.

Strickland, the incumbent middleweight titleholder, managed to turn in one of the biggest upset victories in the history of the UFC, defeating former two-time divisional champion, Adesanya with a stunning unanimous decision win at UFC 293 earlier this month in Sydney, Australia.

And already pegged to defend his championship in an immediate title rematch against City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya next, Strickland has hit the headlines in abundance since winning the undisputed crown.

Just three days removed from his title win, Strickland revealed he broke a panel on his championship belt, which he elected to attempt to repair with some makeshift alterations in the form of some duct tape.

Furthermore, footage emerged of the hugely outspoken Covina native, Strickland chasing Monster Energy rep, Hans Molenkamp around a gym – all whilst armed with a fully functional flamethrower – which was lighting at the time.

And now, after further video evidence showed Strickland stabbing a heavy bag in a bid to teach viewers how to stab somebody, the newly crowned middleweight champion revealed he somehow drank his own urine after his title win at UFC 293.

“Back to your normal programing… my brain “Sean make sure you throw way that coffee cup in your car you pissed in so you don’t forget,”” Sean Strickland posted on his official X account. “The next day “Goddamnit I drank the wrong cup.” The moral of the story here is throw away the piss cups or you might accidentally drink it.”

Whilst linked with a title fight rematch against Adesanya next, Strickland has also received a title fight call out from the surging number one ranked contender, Dricus du Plessis, as well as former foe, Jared Cannonier, who holds a win over Strickland.

Octagon legend Ken Shamrock believes the UFC needs to tread carefully when it comes to their new middleweight world champion, Sean Strickland.

On September 9, Strickland shocked the world with a stunning unanimous decision victory over Israel Adesanya to capture his first piece of UFC gold. Strickland, who was known more for his outlandish and sometimes vile commentaries, entered the bout as a massive 7-to-1 underdog, but that didn’t stop him from shutting down Adesanya’s offense over the course of their 25-minute affair and nearly put ‘The Last Stylebender’ away in the opening round.

Before booking the UFC title tilt earlier this month, Adesanya suggested that the promotion was hesitant to pull the trigger for fear that Strickland would “embarrass the company” during his press appearances. As it turns out, ‘Tarzan’ almost didn’t even make it that far after claiming that he had punched an unruly fan in the streets of Australia ahead of his first title fight.

Strickland’s coach Eric Nicksick revealed that the promotion nearly pulled his fighter from the event, replacing him with one-time title challenger Jared Cannonier after ‘Tarzan’ had essentially ratted on himself.

Ken Shamrock Hopes the UFC Keeps Sean Strickland on the Leash but with a Lot of Slack

With Sean Strickland operating as a bit of a loose cannon, many believe the UFC needs to try and reign in Strickland a bit to avoid any potential unwanted attention. UFC icon Ken Shamrock echoed those sentiments during a recent interview with InsideFighting. The proprietor of the legendary Lion’s Den gym suggested that Strickland’s brash attitude is very reminiscent of Irish megastar Conor McGregor which is certainly not a bad thing when it comes to promoting fights and making money, but believes it could come back to bite the UFC if they aren’t careful.

“To me, I think that, especially in the world of fighting, you’ve got all kinds of characters and you’ve got to be ready for them. It’s marketing. As long as people want to hate you, or they like you, just as long as they tune in. So it doesn’t matter,” Shamrock said.

“I think McGregor is the perfect example. He crossed the line a few times on things that were a little bit questionable, but it still raises the viewerships. As an owner or as a person promoting fights, you want that, but you’ve got to be able to keep it somewhat under wraps, where it’s not going too far, where you’re hurting people in the process. So, I don’t mind it. I think everybody has character. Everybody is going to be who they’re going to be, and you have to allow that to a certain point. Trying to make everybody go by the same rulesets when it comes to character is a mistake” (h/t MMA News).

Strickland is yet to book his first middleweight title defense, but recent reports suggest that ‘Tarzan’ is hoping to return at UFC 296 in December. Who would you like to see the new 185-pound king defend his crown against first?

And already hitting the headlines following his title win, hugely-outspoken Covina native, Sean Strickland had to repair his actual championship belt in some makeshift fashion in his return to the United States – duct taping a right side panel of the title to the leather belt.

Continuing in his provocative behavior following his championship coronation in Australia, footage has emerged of Strickland chasing the above-mentioned Molenkamp throughout a gym, all while armed with a fully lit flamethrower

Yet to be booked to make his first attempted defense of the middleweight crown in the immediate aftermath of UFC 293, Strickland has been pegged to potentially defend his title in an immediate championship rematch against the above-mentioned, Adesanya.

Furthermore, the Californian has also received call outs from the surging number one ranked, Dricus du Plessis, as well as one-time title challenger, Jared Cannonier – whom defeated Strickland before his championship win in a close, debated decision victory back in Decemebr atop a UFC Apex facility card.

Remaining coy on his fighting future following his title win, Strickland is currently on vacation with his girlfriend – whom has been credited with making a huge difference in the newly-crowned champion’s life prior to his title win.

To say Strickland’s recent title win was a shock is an understatement. While the American had proven himself as a competent top-10 middleweight, hardly any analyst, fighter or media member picked him to win.

However, he did Strickland would drop Adesanya in the first round and would continue to walk down and win a comfortable decision. Many have talked about Adesanya’s lack of performance rather than Strickland’s outstanding one.

Jon Anik gives his thoughts on Israel Adesanya’s performance

Talking to MMA Fighting,  Jon Anik would give his thoughts on the recent title fighting and would give an honest and fair assessment. Anik claimed that while Strickland was always capable, Adesanya could have been overlooking his opponent going into the bout.

“This sport oftentimes produces the unthinkable,” Anik said. “And anything can and does happen in some of these other sports, but just not with the frequency with which it happens in our sport. And there were a lot of people asking me if there was betting value on Sean Strickland, and I didn’t even necessarily know how to answer that question.

“Was he capable of this masterpiece? Yes. Can he execute like this again? I would think probably. But I do believe that the other side discounted him a little bit and didn’t necessarily understand what he was capable of, and they paid the ultimate price.” (H/T MMA News)

It isn’t clear if the UFC will pursue a rematch between Strickland and Adesanya, or whether Strickland will take on one of the other middleweight contenders.
