Jon Jones reacts to retirement hint UFC ok my bad I'll keep fighting

Undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has reacted to fan outrage after he dropped the biggest hint yet on his impending retirement from the sport, ahead of an expected fight with former division champion, Stipe Miocic.

Jones, a former two-time undisputed light heavyweight champion, returned from a three-year Octagon hiatus back in March of this year in the main event of UFC 285.

Minting himself as the undisputed heavyweight champion, Jones managed to clinch the vacant heavyweight crown with a spectacular first round guillotine choke win over former interim titleholder, Cyril Gane.

Linked with an immediate fighting return in the main event of UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July of this summer, Jones’ comeback and expected title defense against the returning Miocic has been put on skids, according to UFC boss, Dana White.

Providing an update on his fighting future during last weekend’s broadcast of UFC Fight Night Kansas City, Jones hinted at a showdown with Miocic at an annual Madison Square Garden event for the UFC later this year.

Jon Jones expected to headline MSG event later this year in UFC return

Immediately sending fans and followers of his into raptures with his slew of tweets, notably, onlookers questioned Jones on the mentioning of an incoming retirement from the sport – warranting a response from the Endicott native.

“OK my bad, I’ll keep fighting,” Jon Jones tweeted in response to a Twitter user who asked him to reconsider a retirement.

Addressing Jones’ fighting future at the heavyweight limit, UFC leader, White, confirmed that the organization planned to field a championship fight between the former and the returning, Miocic in the ‘Big Apple’ later this annum

“As far as I know, everything is good and hopefully we have a fight with him (Jon Jones) and Stipe (Miocic) very soon,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Fight Night Kansas City. “That’s where we’d like to do it [Madison Square Garden].”

“That was totally blown out of proportion,” White explained. “This is what you guys do. I say something, you blow it way out of proportion. I said all the build-up and the leadup to that fight [with Gane], all this Jon Jones (coverage), then poof – he’s just gone. Then I don’t know what Stipe said, then it turns into f*cking drama. There’s no drama here.”

Jon Jones had a busy night on Twitter.

The reigning UFC heavyweight champion decided to come out of hiding, targeting the general consensus heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic. Bones’ and Miocic are slated to scrap inside the Octagon later this year. Unfortunately, the highly anticipated matchup won’t take place in July during the promotion’s annual International Fight Week festivities as once expected.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, UFC President Dana White squashed the possibility of a heavyweight showdown between the two behemoths this summer, noting that Jon Jones had seemingly disappeared after his UFC 285 destruction of the division’s top contender, Ciryl Gane.

“Poof, Jon Jones goes back underground and [he said], ‘Let me know when the Stipe fight’s done,’” White said. “He is a fascinating, talented artist to deal with. I haven’t heard a word out of him.”

Miocic was quick to throw in his two cents, suggesting that Jon Jones was the one running from a fight after ‘Bones’ claimed the former two-time titleholder had ducked him for the entirety of 2022. “Weird… because last month you said I was the one running,” Miocic wrote in response to the video clip.

Reemerging on social media around the same time that Max Holloway was putting on another striking clinic against Arnold Allen at UFC Kansas City, Jon Jones took another dig at his would-be challenger.

“I lay low for a few weeks and then you convince yourself that I’m afraid of you,” Jones tweeted to Miocic. “Whatever you need to tell yourself old timer.”

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic Could Be Headed to the World’s Most Famous Arena

During the UFC Kansas City post-fight press event on Saturday night, Dana White confirmed that the promotion was targeting a return to the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, this fall. That is nothing out of the ordinary as the promotion has run November events at the iconic venue in 2019, 2021, and 2022. White offered no additional details, but a tweet by Jon Jones may have revealed when and where his heavyweight war with Stipe Miocic will take place.

When asked about the initially proposed summertime setting, Jon Jones confirmed that is no longer on the docket. “I think UFC has other plans for us,” Jones tweeted.

Asked if a November duel at MSG was likely, ‘Bones’ played coy.

If the bout has been in fact moved to November, fans will have to bear the burden of waiting a little longer for the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history, but you couldn’t ask for a better setting than NYC’s MSG.

Dana White confirms plan Jon Jones Stipe Miocic fight at Madison Square Garden UFC

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed plans for the organization to book an undisputed heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones, and former titleholder, Stipe Miocic for an earmarked pay-per-view card at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Jones, the newly-crowned undisputed heavyweight champion, had clinched the vacant title back in March of this year, landing a first round guillotine choke victory over former interim champion, Ciryl Gane in a dominant triumph.

As for Miocic, the Ohio native has been sidelined since March 2021, suffering a devastating second round KO loss against former champion, Francis Ngannou in the pair’s championship rematch.

Expected to matchup with Miocic at UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July, reports confirmed earlier this week how Jones and the former would see their anticipated clash delayed, potentially until the fall.

Last night Endicott native, Jones, hinted at both a rescheduled clash with Miocic for the promotion’s annual pay-per-view outing at Madison Square Garden – as well as his impending retirement from the sport.

Dana White confirms plan for Jon Jones x Stipe Miocic at MSG

And providing an update on the status of the expected fight, UFC leader, White confirmed the promotion’s plan to book a title fight between Jones and Miocic for a MSG card before the close of this year.

“As far as I know, everything is good and hopefully we have a fight with him (Jon Jones) and Stipe (Miocic) very soon,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Fight Night Kansas City. “That’s where we’d like to do it [Madison Square Garden].”

Recently, White had explained Jones had gone radio silent and had “disappeared” since winning vacant heavyweight gold against Gane – before suggesting media had blown his comments out of proportion.

“That was totally blown out of proportion,” White explained. “This is what you guys do. I say something, you blow it way out of proportion. I said all the build up and leadup to that fight [with Gane], all this Jon Jones (coverage), then poof – he’s just gone. Then I don’t know what Stipe said, then it turns into f*cking drama. There’s no drame here.”

“So, I guess Jon’s back, huh?” White said. “He doesn’t disappear anymore – it’s so f*cking easy to create dream in this sport. It’s f*cking insane.”

Jon Jones decided to take over Twitter while Max Hollway and Arnold Allen were putting on a 25-minute masterclass at UFC Kansas City on Saturday night.

The reigning UFC heavyweight champion was originally slated for a showdown with former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic this summer during the promotion’s annual International Fight Week festivities. Unfortunately, it appears that is no longer the case after UFC President Dana White claimed that Jon Jones had simply disappeared after his UFC 285 return. ‘Bones’ reemerged on social media Saturday night, taking a dig at Miocic while responding to some fan inquiries.

Jones kicked things off, responding to a comment by Miocic who suggested that ‘Bones’ was the one running from a heavyweight clash.

“I lay how for a few weeks and then you convince yourself that I’m afraid of you,” Jones tweeted. “Ha whatever you need to tell yourself old timer.”

From there, Jon Jones dropped a bit of a bombshell, suggesting that his inevitable scrap with Stipe Miocic could in fact be his last.

“How cool would it be to spend my retirement fight dominating the greatest heavyweight of all time, in my home state at Madison Square Garden?”

Jon Jones walking away from combat sports altogether with a win over Stipe Miocic wouldn’t be all that surprising. Having dominated the light heavyweight division for more than a decade, ‘Bones’ transitioned to heavyweight after a three-year-long layoff. Dispatching top contender Ciryl Gane in just over two minutes to capture the division’s biggest prize, a win over Stipe Miocic would likely cement his legacy as the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts history. After that, there would be little incentive for ‘Bones’ to stick around, aside from cashing the occasional paycheck from Uncle Dana.

Continuing to respond to fan inquiries on Twitter, Jon Jones confirmed that July is most certainly out of the question for his meeting with Stipe Miocic. However, ‘Bones’ suggested that a November date at the world’s most famous arena could be in the cards for the highly anticipated heavyweight title fight.

Stipe Miocic calls Jon Jones UFC 290 fight delayed you said I was the one running

Fans will have to wait a little longer for Jon Jones to defend his newly won UFC heavyweight championship against former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic.

All parties involved appeared to be deadset on making the highly anticipated heavyweight superfight happen this July during the promotion’s annual International Fight Week festivities. ESPN’s Marc Raimondi put the kibosh on that, reporting that the fight is still expected, but much more likely for a fall setting rather than a summertime one.

Appearing on the Pat McAffee Show, UFC President Dana White poured further doubt on the fight happening at UFC 290, revealing that he has not heard from Jon Jones since ‘Bones’ dispatched Ciryl Gane in the first round of their UFC 285 main event last month.

“Jon Jones goes back underground … ‘Let me know when the Stipe fight is done,’” White said of the heavyweight champ. “He is a fascinating, talented artist to deal with. I haven’t heard a word out of him. Poof! Gone! He’s back in New Mexico doing whatever he does. He’s shooting guns, he’s got German Shepherds, he’s doing his thing.”

Getting wind of White’s comments, Stipe Miocic pointed out the irony of Jones claiming that he was the one running from the fight no more than a month ago.

“Weird… because last month you said I was the one running, Jonny Bones,” Stipe Miocic wrote on Twitter. “If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the gym.”

Dana White is Confident Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic Will Happen Eventually

It’s an unfortunate turn of events, but given that Jon Jones’ long-awaited return just occurred in March, it was a big ask to see him back inside the Octagon by July. Particularly by heavyweight standards where fans are lucky if they have the opportunity to see the title defended once a year.

Despite the setback, Dana White is confident that the promotion will eventually deliver the goods.

“I love making the big fights, making fights that should happen when they’re supposed to happen,” he told Pat McAffee. “In the history of the company, since I’ve been here, right? Twenty-two, twenty-three years, or whatever it is. There’s only two fights we weren’t able to make: the Fedor fight with Fedor Emelianenko against Brock Lesnar, and then a Francis Ngannou fight. Not a bad record… and I’ll take it.”
