Stipe Miocic isn’t focused on fighting during the COVID-19 pandemic that is impacting the entire world.

Many countries are in lockdown while the sports world is shut down due to the virus. The UFC has postponed three events but Dana White remains adamant UFC 249 on April 18 will be their return event.

Yet, for UFC heavyweight champion in Stipe Miocic, he says the trilogy against Daniel Cormier was set for the summer. But now, with the pandemic shutting gyms down, Miocic says he is focusing on his other job of being a firefighter. So, he isn’t thinking about fighting at all.

“It’s looking like summer. But with this going on right now, honestly I’m not even worried about that,” Miocic said in an interview with UFC reporter Megan Olivi (via MMA Junkie). “I’m worried about firefighting, and the paramedics out there and I got to do what I got to do. There’s so many people out there that need help. There’s people that are going to stay at home and some of them might get sick. I’m putting myself in harm’s way and I’m okay with that. But I’ve got to make sure when I’m home at the end of the day my family is okay.”

This is no doubt an interesting time for everyone. Miocic is deciding to help people out firefighting instead of fighting. Although UFC president Dana White says he has a new location for UFC 249, many fans believe the fight won’t happen due to travel bans and the status if COVID-19.

When Stipe Miocic will return to the Octagon is to be seen. But, the champ did recently get cleared to return following an eye injury. Last time out, he TKO’d Daniel Cormier to regain the heavyweight belt.

What do you make of Stipe Miocic saying he isn’t focusing on fighting during the COVID-19 pandemic?

It appears there has been some movement in getting a Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier trilogy fight booked.

Miocic became a two-time UFC heavyweight champion when he defeated Cormier via fourth-round TKO at UFC 241 back in August. Since then, the plan has been for them to meet one more time in a trilogy fight.

Miocic recently confirmed earlier this month that he was expecting a summer bout with Cormier. And while the coronavirus pandemic could threaten a future fight, “DC” hinted that there has been some advanced negotiations for what is expected to be his last fight:

“Look, I know we’re in a crazy time right now with the world and with the way things are and it’s very up in the air but I think for me with the way things are going and the discussions that we had heading into the fight, into all this, the way that the discussions in terms of the fight were going, where I am going to fight this guy for my last fight, it’s going to be as ideal for me as I could ever hope for,” Cormier said in an Instagram live session with Kamaru Usman on Friday (via MMA Fighting). “It’s gonna be beautiful.”

Although there were no further details, Cormier hinted he could share a card with Usman, who was expected to face Jorge Masvidal during International Fight Week in the summer.

“I know people like getting scoops, and I think if I’m guessing, I think the way things are falling you and I may be spending more time together than most people believe,” Cormier said. “Obviously we can’t say a date and time yet but it is looking like you and I shall and will be sharing a party and I think that’s going to be a good thing.”

It remains to be seen if that is still the case as Usman recently confirmed his fight with Masvidal was off because of the coronavirus.

But regardless of when Cormier eventually faces Miocic, he remains adamant it will in fact be his last foray inside the Octagon:

“I got one [fight left],” Cormier added. “Some guy asked me today, he goes ‘you gonna keep fighting?’. I said no. I said I got one [more fight]. Cause here’s the deal, you fight these guys, they’re 28, 27, I think [Israel] Adesanya’s very young. Some of these guys are very young. I don’t have to fight a young guy.

“Miocic is about to be 38 years old. So I get to fight one more old guy, one more time. That’s it. I ain’t fighting no 27-year-old dude.”

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has revealed his eye injury is almost fully healed and says he expects to complete his trilogy with Daniel Cormier this summer.

According to his agent Jim Walter of Kaulig Sports and Entertainment, Miocic suffered a serious eye injury during his heavyweight rematch with Cormier at UFC 241 in August 2019, he said.

“Mr. Miocic sustained
a major retina injury from multiple eye pokes during his bout at UFC 241. Our
client’s health and safety is our top priority. We are excited for him to
return to action when he is healthy to compete in his seventh consecutive world
title fight.”

In a statement to ESPN the fighter himself refused to put a timeline on his return saying.

“I’ll be ready to
fight when I can see out of both eyes again. I can’t wait to defend my belt.”

Luckily for fight fans Miocic seems to be pretty much healed up and raring to go this summer. He’s slowly getting back into the gym and his vision is almost perfect right now.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, he said. “I’m good man can’t complain. The eye is really good actually. I feel its healed up. It’s getting better everyday and I’m getting back in the gym slowly. I’m just getting in there, trying to get in better shape and seeing how my body feels and making sure I feel good. “

The reporter then asked if his next fight would be against Cormier and despite originally wanting a new challenge after reclaiming his belt, Miocic seemed to be on board with the idea of a trilogy fight, he said.

Ye man! It’s looking like summer. A lot of these fights
are already booked up, so it’ll probably be summer time. If that’s what the UFC
want and the matchmaker. I always say without the matchmaker I wouldn’t be
fighting. It sucks for him (Daniel Cormier) he’s going to lose again.

It looks like we will finally get the trilogy between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.

Miocic regained his heavyweight title against Cormier following a fourth-round TKO win in their rematch at UFC 241 back in August. However, he has been on the sidelines since with an eye injury stemming from the fight.

But as things stand, his eye feels good and he’s slowly getting back into the groove of things:

“Eye is really good actually,” Miocic told TMZ (via MMA Junkie). “It’s healed up, it’s getting better every day and getting back to training slowly.”

When asked about who he would face next in previous months, Miocic didn’t seem to express much of an interest in fighting Cormier again. His agent also claimed he was targeting an opponent he hadn’t beaten before in 2020.

Those comments irked “DC” who would later urge Miocic to do the right thing and give him the trilogy. Luckily for Cormier, it’s what the UFC wants to happen and Miocic appears to be more on board with it:

“It’s looking like summer,” he said. “I think a lot of these fight (dates) are booked up, so probably about summertime. Yeah, (the Cormier trilogy is) what the UFC wants. I’m not the matchmaker. If I was the matchmaker, I wouldn’t be fighting.”

The trilogy is expected to be Cormier’s last fight — win or lose. And unsurprisingly, Miocic plans on giving the former champion a defeat in his final foray inside the Octagon.

“It sucks for him,” Miocic added. “He’s going to lose again.”
