It’s easy to say someone fought like a champion when they’re on a winning streak, beating contenders, or wearing gold around their waist. It’s not always so obvious when they walk away from a match as the loser. Yet that’s just the scenario around Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal after his Strikeforce light-heavyweight championship loss on Saturday night.

Lawal may have lost the belt to Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante at Strikeforce: Houston (does this mean Cavalcante is now the king?), but the indelible image of the champion desperately clutching at Cavalcante’s legs for a takedown in the final seconds should silence any last doubts about Lawal’s gameness.

HOUSTON – Former pro wrestler Bobby Lashley came into his bout with Chad Griggs at Strikeforce: Houston as an overwhelming 8-1 favorite. A little more than ten minutes later, he staggered out of the cage beaten, bloodied, and with his hype bubble officially burst.

It was a fight that was supposed to be a showcase for Lashley, but somewhere in there in turned into an actual test. It was the first real challenge that Lashley has faced in his relatively short and sheltered MMA career. Instead of rising to the occasion, he wilted under the pressure.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal was upset by Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante Saturday at Strikeforce Houston, as a tough, back-and-forth fight ended with Feijao landing elbow after elbow to Lawal’s head in the clinch until Lawal couldn’t fight any longer.

Feijao said afterward that he prepared for this fight like never before. It showed.
