Jorge GurgelThe knock on Jorge Gurgel, for years now, has been an apparent insistence on showing off his standup game – preferring to trade punches and kicks and knees with his opponents rather than taking the fight to the ground.

It’s a double-edged sword. Fans sure love knockouts. Gurgel seems to know this, and wants to give the fans a show. But the buzz had grown increasingly louder the last few years that he needed to give the slugfests a break and, well, just submit someone already.

On Saturday, the Ohio resident needed just 44 seconds to finally get the submission monkey off his back when he slapped a guillotine choke on Billy Vaughan on the preliminary card of Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson in Columbus. Sure, Vaughan took the fight on four days notice after Tyler Combs dropped off with an injury. But at this point, a tapout is a tapout.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – This is the live blog for the untelevised preliminary card of Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson, which takes place tonight at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The main card of the event, Strikeforce’s first in Ohio, features two title fights and will be broadcast live on Showtime at 10 p.m. Eastern. The preliminary card features six fights – with 11 of the 12 fighters hailing from Ohio.

Highlights on the preliminary card include Roger Bowling, who had a pair of entertaining fights against Bobby Voelkler last year, vs. Josh Thornburg, a Cesar Gracie fighter who will have Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in his corner; Jorge Gurgel, who looks to snap a two-fight skid against Billy Vaughan, who took the fight on four days’ notice; and heavyweight Jason Riley, whose Strikeforce debut last year was a quick submission loss to unbeaten rising star Daniel Cormier.

After years of constant back and forth shuttling between mixed martial arts and kickboxing, Dutch striking powerhouse Melvin Manhoef is committed solely to MMA in 2011. His year kicks off at March 5’s Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson event, when he takes on former No. 1 middleweight contender Tim Kennedy.

Speaking on a teleconference, the 34-year-old Manhoef said while he was not retiring from kickboxing, he would shelve his pursuits in that sport for the foreseeable future while working to round out his MMA game, which has been criticized for holes in his ground defense.
