SFL 5: Recap

SFL 5 was a night of submissions, with five of the shows seven fights ending via choke. The shows headliner – rising star Lakwinder Singh Sekhon – lived up to his nickname ‘Lightning’ by choking out his opponent in just 71 seconds but not before coming under some heavy fire himself. Sekhon stays undefeated with all wins coming via way of stoppage. Meanwhile the women’s SFL Challengers champion Manjit Kolekar began her journey in MMA with an impressive second round TKO win against former rival Ritika Singh.

After the impressive knockouts of SFL 4, slick and dangerous grappling skills were showcased in SFL 5, highlighting the ever evolving ground game of India’s elite fighters.

SFL COO Dan Isaac said of SFL 5 “Supreet Bedi [SFL TV host] summed it up perfectly when she said , ‘If you can surprise the COO and matchmaker of the SFL you’re doing something right’. These two shows have been just the tip of the ice-berg , we have ‘never heard of’ talent being signed up almost every week. The SFL training camp is full to capacity and the next few shows are going to wake everyone up to Indian MMA.”

The relationship is intended to support Invicta FC’s goals of identifying the best women’s fight talent around the globe and producing the best possible matchups between women’s mixed martial artists while, at the same time, providing Super Fight League with a means of promoting MMA to a broader demographic in its homeland.

“We are excited about this opportunity to work with Super Fight League and tap into a new market that has yet to really be explored by the women’s MMA world,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp. “Super Fight League has done a great job of pioneering the sport of MMA in India and has helped demonstrate that there is fight talent everywhere on the planet. Even though women’s MMA has made tremendous strides over the last few years as far as adding depth to its ranks, we have really just scratched the surface of what is out there. This relationship between Invicta FC and Super Fight League is an opportunity to expand our reach and discover exciting, new talent.

“Super Fight League is thrilled to form a cooperative relationship with an MMA promotion in The United States,” said Super Fight League Chairman Raj Kundra. “Invicta FC has done some incredible things for women’s MMA in such a short time and I am confident that working with their great organization is a step that will helpfurther the MMA movement in India that we initiated this year with our live event series.”

In June, Invicta FC announced the formation of a similar strategic partnership with Japan-based women’s MMA promotion JEWELS. The main card of the last Invicta FC event on July 28 featured two JEWELS champions – Ayaka Hamasaki and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano.

As of its next event on Saturday, Oct. 6, Invicta FC will have promoted matchups with fighters from seven other countries – Ireland, Scotland, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands and France – in addition to The United States and Japan.

The Indian based Super Fight League promotion is continuing to forge ahead with four more events for 2012 following a disappointing fan turnout for it’s third event.

It’s next show, scheduled for this September according to promotion CEO Ken Pavio, who spoke to MMAjunkie.com Radio recently, and will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between UFC veterans Jeff ‘The Snowman’ Monson (46-13-1) and Todd Duffee (7-2).

SFL 4 will take place on September 8, 2012 in Bengaluru, India.

Monson has rebounded from a decision loss to Fedor Emelianenko last November by going 3-0-1 in his last four matches including a first round submission win over Russian fighter Denis Komkin at last weeks M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo event. ‘The Snowman’ has been fighting for various promotions over the past few years competing for M-1, Strikeforce among others. Other than the loss to Fedor, his last memorable bout was a decision loss to Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament winner Daniel Cormier in an alternate bout for the tournament in June 2011.

Duffee, who signed a four-fight deal with the SFL last February, debuted with the promotion in April at SFL 2, stopping former Bellator heavyweight Neil Grove by first round knockout at 34-seconds. The win ended a two fight losing skid dating back to 2010 for the former UFC fighter. The losses included knockout defeats at the hands of Alistair Overeem for the DREAM heavyweight title and to Mike Russow at UFC 114.

Also announced for future SFL events were bouts between UFC vets Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (12-10) vs. Trevor Prangley (25-9-1) and Japanese Olympian Satoshi Ishii (4-2-1) vs. Jimmy Ambriz (16-18-1).

Press Release – (Mumbai, 24th June 2012) Super Fight League (SFL) is proud to announce the signings of: Jeff Monson, Satoshi Ishii, Rameau Sokoudjou and Michael Page for four fight exclusive deals.

India’s top MMA Organsiation, Super Fight League continues to add to its impressive fighter roster with this second wave of signings, adding to its current stable of fighters which includes; Todd Duffee, James Thompson, Paul Kelly, Trevor Prangley and Professor X.

Jeff Monson
Fighting out of American Top Team, UFC Heavyweight Title Challenger and vet of DREAM, PRIDE and Strikeforce Jeff ‘the Snowman’ Monson (46 – 13- 1) is considered one of the world’s top grapplers. A BJJ Blackbelt and submission artist, Monson also holds a Masters Degree in Psychology.

With victories over Roy Nelson, Sergei Kharitonov, Mark Kerr and Ricco Rodriguez, Monson is an impressive addition to the SFL Heavyweight division.

SFL CEO Ken Pavia said: ‘Jeff has achieved a high level of success fighting all over the
world. We are very excited to add him to our roster and test him in our elite HW division. He is always entertaining and is one of the true personalities of the sport.”

Satoshi Ishii
25 year old Japanese Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii is one of the most popular sports figures in Japan today and joins the stacked SFL Heavyweight division alongside Monson, Duffee, Thompson and Lashley.

Having trained at American Top Team, Xtreme Couture and Blackhouse, Ishii holds a 5th Dan Black Belt in Judo and boasts notable wins over Minowaman and Jerome LeBanner.

SFL CEO Ken Pavia said: ‘With an Olympic gold medal in Japan comes the burden of not being
able to walk the streets of Tokyo without being mobbed. His popularity coupled with his work ethic, drive, and his track record for success are the reasons SFL so aggressively pursued Ishii. We are honored to add him to the roster as another exclusive fighter.’

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
A former KSW Light Heavyweight Champion fighting out of Team Quest, the ‘African Assassin’ Rameau Sokoudjou (12 – 10) will be looking to make an impact at SFL.

WEC, PRIDE, UFC, DREAM and Strikeforce vet, decorated Judo champion Sokoudjou has notable wins over Jan Blachowiz, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona.

Sokoudjou said: ‘I am excited to have found a home in a major organization. SFL has put together some talented fighters. I see explosive fights in my future!’

SFL CEO Ken Pavia said: ‘”There has never been such a thing as a boring Sokoudjou fight. We
are in the entertainment business and he personifies entertainment. As many have found out, he has one and done power so don’t blink. I can’t wait to see him in his October debut with the SFL.’

Michael Page
British based Welterweight kickboxing champion Michael Page (2 – 0) has made a huge impact in his short career, being dubbed the UK’s Anderson Silva due to his unconventional fighting style. One of the UK’s most promising young fighters, Page is an exciting addition to the SFL roster.

I’m really pleased to have SFL sign rising MMA star and world champion kickboxer Michael Page, who’s looking forward to fighting his heart out for the Indian fans and everyone watching around the world.’
