Things didn’t go Frankie Edgar’s way earlier this morning (Sat. December 21, 2019) at UFC Busan.

Edgar stepped in on short-notice to main event opposite “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung. However, right off the bat, Jung dominated, stunning Edgar with his power, pouncing on him on the ground, flattening him out, and getting in some good ground-and-pound.

After Edgar got to his feet, he was once again planted by Jung’s big power, forcing the referee to step in and call off the bout. Now, hours later, Edgar has taken to Twitter to release a statement on his loss. Here’s what he had to say:

“Well not what I had planned coming out here to South Korea, but win like a man and lose like one too. Hats off to the @KoreanZombie on a great performance. I think it may be time to cut this damn hair. Thank you to my family, team, and fans for the love and support.”

Edgar planned to cut down to 135 pounds before taking his fight with Jung at featherweight. It will be interesting to see if he follows through with those plans. As for Jung, after his big win over Edgar, he now has his eyes set on a title fight with newly-crowned champion Alexander Volkanovski.

What did you make of Edgar’s performance against Jung in Busan?

UFC Busan Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

This is such an interesting matchup, but everything really points to Jung’s favor here. It’s in his own backyard, and he’s taking on an Edgar who is jumping into the fight on short notice. I think this one goes all five rounds, but Jung gets the decision win when it’s all said and done. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Abhinav Kini:

Unfortunately, we’re not getting a Korean Zombie vs. Brian Ortega fight. But a Frankie Edgar fight will do, especially on short notice. These two were supposed to fight at UFC Denver last year and I believe I was picking Edgar back then. However, after seeing their recent performances, I feel this will only go Zombie’s way and it could even be with a finish given how good he’s looked in recent fights. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Jordan Ellis:

Korean Zombie has everything in his favor heading into this fight against Frankie Edgar. The South Korean will fight in front of his home crowd, on the back of a full camp and a big win last time out. The former lightweight champion Edgar will travel the globe on short notice to take a fight 10lbs above the weight he was scheduled to fight at next month. All of this points towards a Chan Sung Jung victory. For me it’s just a matter of how he’ll get it done. And in my opinion he’ll get the finish in quick and empathic fashion. Maybe even as early as the first round. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

Timmy Moran:

A close matchup headlines the UFC Fight Night 165 where Frankie Edgar looks to spoil the homecoming of Chan Sun Jung. Although credit is due to Edgar for stepping in on such short notice, it won’t be enough as the Korean Zombie will have the Korean faithful cheering him on the night of the fight. Expect a five-round war between the two with the Korean Zombie getting the nod via decision. (Prediction: Korean Zombie)

“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung is looking phenomenal as he prepares to take on Frankie Edgar in Busan, South Korea.

The pair will headline UFC Busan this weekend (December 21, 2019) after Edgar stepped in on short notice for the injured Brian Ortega. This came as a bit of a surprise given Edgar was booked to make his bantamweight debut against Cory Sandhagen next month. However, Edgar opted to jump up to 145 pounds and fight Jung instead.

Jung shared the following photo of himself as he prepares to face Edgar this weekend, and he’s looking absolutely shredded.

Edgar and Jung were expected to fight back at UFC Denver in 2018. Unfortunately, Edgar had to pull out due to an injury. Speaking in a recent interview, Edgar admitted that that plays a part in why he decided to take the fight now.

“It played a part,” Edgar said. “I felt like we were very familiar with him. We were so close to fighting just a year ago so it wasn’t that far off. We were supposed to fight and I want to right that wrong.”

What do you think about Jung’s physique ahead of his fight with Edgar this weekend?

Last night, news broke that Brian Ortega suffered a torn ACL and was forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC Busan headliner against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung on December 21.

Now, the UFC is looking for a replacement opponent for Jung. It seems that former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar could step in. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that Edgar is currently the frontrunner to replace Ortega and take on Jung.

Of course, Edgar is currently scheduled to take on Cory Sandhagen at UFC Raleigh in late January next month. However, the report adds that the UFC hopes to keep that fight intact, in addition to Edgar fighting Jung later this month.

“Frankie Edgar is the frontrunner to replace Brian Ortega versus Chan Sung Jung on Dec. 21, sources say. Looking good. Yes, he’s scheduled to fight Cory Sandhagen next month, but UFC is hoping to keep the fight in tact, too. They would have to assess after the South Korea fight.”

The loss of the Ortega vs. Jung matchup is certainly a big blow for fans, as there seemed to be a buildup of animosity between the pair, who took shots at one another through social media before the fight became official. Now, Edgar could potentially fight again at 145 pounds, filling in for Ortega, before cutting to 135 for his bantamweight debut.

What do you think about Edgar stepping in to face Jung, and possibly fighting again the next month?
