Top UFC Light-heavyweight contender Thiago Santos expects to earn himself a title shot with a highlight reel win over Glover Teixeira at UFC Vegas 13.

Speaking during the event’s media day Santos was asked his thought on the UFC looking to book Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya against Light-Heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz early next year, resulting in this main event seemingly not being for an immediate title shot.

“Yeah, we’ll see what’s going to happen after that fight,” Santos said regarding the matchup. “First I need to beat Glover Teixeira, I’m going to do by best and show everyone that I’m back and that I’m really number one contender and yeah, we will see what’s going to happen after I fight. I believe whoever wins the fight deserves to go for the title shot.”

“”I know Dana White spoke about Adesanya but no one knows, no one has contracts I need to do my best, and Saturday I need to win my fight and we will see.””

Santos himself has a history with the current Light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz, facing off against him in February of 2019 capturing the victory by stunning knockout in the third round. Since then Santos went on to a failed title shot against Jon Jones in which he severely injured his knee and was forced to take a long lay off from the sport.

His return bout against Glover Teixeira comes months in the making originally being scheduled as the main event on two prior dates, each being canceled and both fighters respectively tested positive for COVID-19.

Glover Teixeira is coming off a dominant victory over Anthony Smith in May, this fight saw the 41-year-old add to his winning streak taking it to a total of four coming into this weekend’s main event.

Thiago Santos Confident Of Knocking Out Blachowicz Again In A Rematch

UFC light-heavyweight contender Thiago Santos is confident he will be able to knock out the newly crowned 205lb champion Jan Blachowicz for a second time if they rematch for the title.

Blachowicz captured the belt recently made vacant by Jon Jones by stopping Dominick Reyes inside two rounds at UFC 253 this past weekend. Santos is actually the last man to beat Blachowicz who stretched his win streak to four on ‘Fight Island’. The Brazilian stopped Blachowicz in the third round of their 2019 bout. Santos earned a title shot with the win but came up short against Jon Jones who got a controversial split decision win to retain his title against Santos at UFC 239.

Speaking to MMA Junkie Santos expressed his belief that the Blachowicz who won the light-heavyweight title against Reyes is no better than the fighter he fought last year, he said.

“I didn’t see him so different. Sure, he has more experience. Everyone tries to learn and improve their game, but I didn’t see such a difference between Blachowicz now and Blachowicz who I fought before.”

“I told my friends, people close to me, and I knew Blachowicz could win the fight by TKO, so I called it,” Santos said. “I knew before. Blachowicz has hands, has power, and Dominick should have moved more. He wasn’t moving well; I felt he was a little bit strange. He did the wrong game. He should have moved, but he went to fight, and Blachowicz he’s good in 50-50 fight, he’s dangerous. He has hands, so I think Dominick did the wrong game (plan) and Blachowicz did what he should do.”

Before he can fight for the 205lb belt once again Santos must first get past Glover Teixeira who is also hoping to secure his second shot at UFC gold. ‘Marreta’ is excited by the prospect of beating his countryman later this year before turning his attention to a rematch with Blachowicz.

“I’m so excited for that opportunity, but my focus now is on Glover Teixeira my next fight,” Santos said. “I need to show everyone that I deserve the opportunity for the belt again, and I will do it. After I win against Glover Teixeira, sure, my focus is going to be on Blachowicz and a title shot.”

Top Light Heavyweight contenders Thiago Santos and Glover Teixeira have been rescheduled for a third time, this time they are set to headline a November Fight Night card in a crucial light heavyweight bout.

Thiago Santos and Glover Teixeira were first set to headline a Fight Night card on Sept. 12 but Teixeira tested positive for COVID-19 and the fight was moved to Oct. 3. Unfortunately, then Thiago Santos tested positive for the virus leaving the fight to be re-booked to headline a Nov. 7 Fight Night card according to ESPN.

Santos opened up to the sports network about his sickness he said aid he experienced a headache and fatigue for “two or three days,” but has since fully recovered to 100% health.

Santos believes the fight makes too much sense as to why they decided to try and book it for the third time, with title implications on the horizon for the division.

“The fight makes sense and Glover and I deserve this position,” Santos said.

“We deserve to fight and see who gets the title shot. I had a good fight with Jon. For a lot of people, I won that fight. I should fight for the title again now, but a lot of things happened and Jan and Reyes are fighting — but I should be next. And I will prove this again when I fight Glover.”

While we haven’t seen Santos since his close decision loss to Jon Jones, Teixeira meanwhile is riding a 4 fight win streak and both top contenders will have a good chance at getting a title shot with a victory in November.
