UFC Bantamweight champion Petr Yan already has his sights set on an opponent following his upcoming title defense at UFC 259.

The champion spoke to Fanatics View’s James Lynch about who he believes should challenge for the title after the upcoming fight with Sterling and he instantly thought of one name.

“Might be TJ Dillashaw after popping, I want fight with him yeah,” Yan said.

The former Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw was suspended for two years in 2019 after testing positive for using performance-enhancing drugs. At this time he was stripped of his title and has remained on the sidelines ever since.

Lynch asked Yan if he thought given the suspension, Dillashaw should or shouldn’t be fighting for the title, however, the champion said that it would be up to the UFC.

“It’s up to the UFC, you know it’s whatever they decide, if the terms are right I’m going to fight him whenever. Let’s make sure he’s not going to use anything prohibited this time.”

Yan is set to defend his Bantamweight title on March 3rd at UFC 259 against Aljamain Sterling in a bout that was originally scheduled for December of 2020.

Sterling is coming off a dominant first-round submission victory at UFC 250 against Corey Sandhagen, while the champion is coming off his successful bid to win the belt against Jose Aldo at UFC 251.

The bout was forced to be postponed in December after Yan pulled out due to undisclosed reasons.

Currently, no date has been set for Dillashaw’s return to the sport, however, his suspension is currently up meaning that he could return at any date in the future.

In his last bout, Dillashaw made the move down to Flyweight to challenge for the title against Henry Cejudo. This move didn’t end up well for the former Bantamweight champion resulting in him being finished by TKO early into round one.

730 days. That is how long former UFC Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw has been forced to sit out for. 2 years later, he is now officially allowed to leave the sidelines and step into the Octagon.

Dillashaw’s last fight would come against Henry Cejudo who successfully defended his belt in only 32 seconds. The loss was devastating. The two-time champ had not achieved his dream of becoming a two-weight world champion and post-fight he protested the ‘early’ stoppage. The bantamweight kingpin would go on to prepare for a rematch with Henry Cejudo at his home of 135 lbs. However, little did he know, his career would take a drastic turn.

Months later, another career-defining moment took place. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) would go on to make a shocking discovery from drug tests submitted by Dillashaw. Recombinant human erythropoietin, better known as EPO, was found in his system surrounding his Flyweight debut.

EPO is an performance-enhancing drug, often times used to better an athlete’s cardio. In this case, USADA’s latest perpetrator, used it to be faster than ever regardless of a draining weight cut to 125lbs.

The Vice President of UFC Athlete Health and Performance, Jeff Novitsky explained the situation.

“I’m quite familiar with EPO from my days investigating professional cycling teams.” Novitsky said. “It’s a very effective substance. It’s not a substance you find in contaminated supplements, it’s injectable only. You have to know what you’re doing when it enters your system.

”On a scale of seriousness in anti-doping, it’s up near the top.”

Dillashaw would not contest the organization’s decision for suspension. In other words, Dillashaw knew exactly what he was doing and is paying the price… until now that it is.

Per USADA’s press release, Dillashaw’s suspension has now ended. Today marks the first day he’s eligible to fight once again in the UFC. The illuring question that is now on everybody’s mind is who should the former king face in his return? Petr Yan is fighting Aljamain Sterling in his first title defense. Cory Sandhagen is fighting Frankie Edgar. 4 out of the top 7 bantamweights are now officially booked against each other, with Jose Aldo and Cody Garbrandt potentially facing off in April.

That leaves Rob Font as the sole contender in the top 7. Font has been campaigning for the ex-champ ever since his KO win over Marlon Moraes. This could be a fight that makes sense, however, according to Dana White, TJ Dillashaw may possibly get a title shot upon request.

Whatever the fight may be, TJ Dillashaw is back. Fight fights (and USADA) will have a watchful eye on his comeback.

Cory Sandhagen doesn’t believe TJ Dillashaw should get an immediate title shot.

Dillashaw is eligible to compete in the UFC as of later this month and has gone on record stating that he would like to fight for the bantamweight title immediately upon his return.

However, Sandhagen — who is set to face Frankie Edgar on February 6 — believes a win for himself should earn him the next crack.

“I think it’s gotta be a title shot, if it makes sense in my head. That’s why I took the fight more than anything,” Sandhagen said in a recent interview of what’s next should he defeat Edgar (via Middle Easy). “I think if I beat Frankie and I keep myself busy, and I don’t play this game of ‘Oh I’m the number two guy so I deserve it after that.’ I’m not going to play that game with the UFC.

“I wanted to stay busy, I wanted a big name, I wanted someone that is good, and Edgar’s it.”

Sandhagen would certainly be deserving of a shot with a win over Edgar as that would put him on a two-fight winning streak with six wins in his last seven UFC outings.

However, Dillashaw is the bigger name as well as the former champion so it wouldn’t be surprising if he were to leapfrog Sandhagen for the next title shot.

But as far as “The Sandman” is concerned, Dillashaw needs at least one win over a top guy before getting a chance at regaining his title — especially after a two-year suspension due to a failed drug test.

“I think TJ definitely needs a win over one of these top guys too, before he comes back and fights for a belt,” Sandhagen added. “I heard him say he’s playing the financially secure card, and ‘I’ll wait for a title shot,’ this and that.

“We’ve been putting in work while you’ve been gone. So that would kind of be a bummer if they just gave it to him.”

For now, nobody knows what will happen as current champion Petr Yan still has to defend his title against Aljamain Sterling.

Regardless, do you agree with Sandhagen?

Rob Font wants TJ Dillashaw or a headlining spot next.

Font earned arguably the biggest win of his career following an emphatic first-round knockout of former title challenger Marlon Moraes at UFC Vegas 17 last night. It put him on a three-fight winning streak in addition to four wins in his last five outings.

Following the victory, Font called for a fight with the returning former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw next. He explained why he wanted Dillashaw further at the post-fight press conference while adding that if that wasn’t the case, he would prefer a headliner fight at the very least.

“I would love to fight that guy,” Font said of Dillashaw (via MMA Fighting). “He’s an ex-champ. Big name, huge name.

“If I don’t get that fight, I just would love to headline a card. I want someone big, either a big name, some type of headline, I would even fill in for the champ, we’ll figure something out.”

With Jose Aldo also calling for a fight with Dillashaw, it’s possible Font may be overlooked. However, his finish over Moraes was certainly more impressive than Aldo’s unanimous decision win over Marlon Vera.

The finish also went just as planned according to Font.

“It went the way I planned, I just figured it would happen in the second round” Font explained. “I figured it would be a rough first round either on the ground or standing, but after that I felt like I was gonna be able to push forward and get the finish in the second round.”

Add in the fact that Aldo — albeit controversially — lost a decision to Moraes and Font certainly has a better claim at getting the Dillashaw fight.

Regardless of who he ends up facing next, Font hopes to eventually become champion in 2021 alongside New England Cartel teammate Calvin Kattar who faces Max Holloway next month.

“2021, Calvin Kattar and myself will be fighting for the title,” Font added.
