TJ Dillashaw will be shelved for the next year and a half after receiving a two-year suspension earlier this year. Dillashaw tested positive for EPO after his first-round TKO loss to Henry Cejudo in January for the 125-pound title.

Now, Dillashaw will sit until 2021 after openly admitting to looking for a competitive edge. In a recent interview with reporter Helen Yee, Dillashaw discussed the 135-pound division without him, claiming the weight class needs him to come back and create some tension. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“That bantamweight division needs me back,” Dillashaw said. “They need the entertainment back and they need me to come back and throw some wrinkles in the weight class and create some tension.”

Dillashaw continued by saying he believes he should get an immediate title opportunity upon his return from suspension, because he never lost the title, but instead had to relinquish it.

“Me. When I come back. That’s why they need me back, they need someone to cause some fire, cause some rift. That is my weight class, I had to give that belt up and fair enough, I understand,” TJ Dillashaw said. “I f****d up, and I had to relinquish it. But, I didn’t lose. That’s my belt, I’m still calling it my belt. I’m still the champion of the world. When I come back I will reclaim it.”

Do you think Dillashaw should get a title shot upon his return to the Octagon?

While Urijah Faber previously wasn’t interested in a fight with TJ Dillashaw, current circumstances have changed things.

Faber had a successful return from retirement in July when he knocked out Ricky Simon in the UFC Sacramento co-main event. He could now be in line for a title shot against bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo in the future.

However, one fight that holds plenty of intrigue is with Dillashaw. The two haven’t seen eye to eye ever since Dillashaw left Team Alpha Male to train in Colorado. And now that Faber is back, he is definitely interested in that fight, especially given the money that would likely be involved:

“I mean the only reason it interests me is because I think there’s probably some money involved in that fight,” Faber said during a recent Q&A with fans ahead of UFC Vancouver (via MMA Fighting). “For a long time I didn’t want to deal with the drama of the whole thing and it didn’t sound enticing to me.

“I was close with his family and what not, especially at the beginning of this. I don’t really feel like I know the guy, or I do know him, a fight with him would be a good one.”

However, any fight will have to wait until 2021 as Dillashaw is currently suspended following a positive EPO test.

Faber wasn’t surprised that the former bantamweight champion was on performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) and believes the playing field will be evened out when he eventually returns.

“As far as waiting around, I’m not really the waiting around type for anything but we’ll see what happens,” Faber added. “He’ll be off the PEDs when he comes back and I’ll be 42 so that should even things out.”

TJ Dillashaw won’t be able to compete until 2021. And it’s only burning him inside further after his last outing in the Octagon.

Dillashaw was knocked out by Henry Cejudo in his attempt to become flyweight champion earlier this year. After the fight, he vacated his bantamweight title as he tested positive for EPO and was suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for two years.

Cejudo would go on to claim the vacant bantamweight crown by knocking out Marlon Moraes — something which only makes Dillashaw want to run things back even more:

“I definitely have some animosity towards myself, towards the sport, just everything,” Dillashaw told Chael Sonnen in a recent video (via MMA Junkie). “I have some enemies that are definitely going to stay my enemies for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t say it’s because (Cejudo) is a (expletive) talker, it’s more just the way he carries himself.

“It’s just something that I want back, not so much because he’s bad-mouthed or treated me a certain way. It’s just something that is burning inside of me, to get my belt back, to get that win back, to get back to where I need to be to get this thing behind me.”

As for Cejudo, the question now is which title he should defend next. Joseph Benavidez appears to be next in line at flyweight and for Dillashaw, that’s the fight that makes sense:

“I think it would be very dumb for Cejudo not to fight Joseph Benavidez,” Dillashaw explained. “That’s his last loss; that’s a fight that he has to make up. I think Joseph Benavidez has a great threat against him, too. That’s the fight that needs to happen, and he can’t be calling himself ‘Triple C’ no more if he’s going to be giving up a belt, so he needs to go down there and get it done and fight Joseph Benavidez.

“I think that’s the next fight for him. It makes the most sense. It’s the biggest draw. It’s a fight that was close, but Joseph did edge that fight out.”

Urijah Faber and TJ Dillashaw have the perfect backstory to make for a great fight inside the Octagon.

The former friends and teammates-turned-rivals have traded insults over the past several years since Dillashaw’s ugly exit from Team Alpha Male. Recently, Faber came out of retirement to pick up a first-round knockout win over Ricky Simon at UFC Sacramento. “The California Kid” is making one last run at the 135-pound title that has eluded him his entire career.

Speaking to MMA Fighting’s “A-Side Live Chat” recently, Faber was asked about a potential clash with “The Viper” down the road. Dillashaw is currently serving a two-year United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension for the intentional use of EPO – a banned substance – to assist in his weight cut to 125 pounds. Faber explained why the matchup does not interest him at the moment:

“I really don’t want to fight TJ. I mean, I really don’t. Especially – you know, the odds are in his favor. He’s like a scientist when it comes to – you know – what he puts in his body.

“And I know that. I’ve heard – whatever he’s doing, I’ve heard about it for years and I’ve never really delved into it, but he’s also younger than I am and he’s been training his butt off. But I love a good fight, and the grit and the intensity and the focus and the backstory is good on that one. But I’d rather test myself for the best.”

Instead, Faber is focused on a possible matchup with current 125 and 135-pound king Henry Cejudo. “The King Of Cringe” recently underwent shoulder surgery, so any potential meeting will have to wait until the first quarter of 2020. However, Faber would likely need to pick up one more win to earn a title nod.

If he does, the Team Alpha Male frontman would love to test himself against a fighter as accomplished as “Triple C”:

“A guy that’s a fair competitor, a guy thats accomplished a lot in this sport, a guy that has done a lot – I mean no one has actually done what Henry’s ever done. He’s the youngest guy from America to get the Gold Medal, he beat some of the best fighters ever in Demetrious Johnson and TJ Dillashaw.

“He also has a win against Joseph Benavidez, who, in my opinion, is one of the uncrowned champions. That’s a guy that I know for sure has never done any PEDs. And, has fought – who knows who has been doing what throughout this time. So, Henry’s beat some very tough guys, and what an opportunity to go test yourself against a historic dude, and vice versa, that’s why he’s called me out.”
