TJ Dillashaw’s partnership with Monster Energy has come to an end.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reports that Monster Energy has parted ways with the former UFC bantamweight champion. The news was made official by Monster’s Hans Molenkamp. Dillashaw was signed to a promotional deal back in December.

Recently, “The Viper” was handed a two-year suspension by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after admitting to the use of EPO in January:

“Monster Energy has parted ways with TJ Dillashaw, according to Monster’s Hans Molenkamp. The company signed him to a promotional deal in Dec. 2018. Dillashaw, the former UFC bantamweight champion, is currently serving a two-year suspension after he tested positive for EPO in Jan.”

Dillashaw’s last outing resulted in a first-round TKO defeat at the hands of 125-pound champ Henry Cejudo. It marked the end of Dillashaw’s four-fight win streak. Dillashaw will be eligible to return to fighting on January 19, 2021, after his two-year suspension is up.

Dillashaw Owns Up

Speaking on an Instagram video shortly after his suspension, Dillashaw owned up to his mistake, and fully accepted the two-year suspension he received:

“I messed up. I’m having a hard time trying to forgive myself for this. Which I should have a hard time. I should have a hard time forgiving myself.

“I understand the criticism and scrutiny coming my way. But what I really feel bad about is the kind of bad light I’m bringing on my coaches, my family, my teammates. They had no involvement in this, and I feel the worst for it. I got a 15-month old son and I want to be a role model for him.

“I’m sure there are a lot of other kids out there too. It’s tough. But I gotta man up to what I did. I accepted all penalties; I didn’t try to fight this thing. I’m gonna sit for the next two years as of January 18.”

Joseph Benavidez is surprised by the fact it took as long as it did for USADA to catch TJ Dillashaw.

The former UFC flyweight title contender sounded off on an issue that many fighters, fans, and media members have already given. Now, it’s Benavidez’s turn to give his take. Dillashaw recently accepted a two-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Dillashaw was caught with EPO in his system and is ineligible to compete until January 2021.

During a recent interview, the top flyweight made it known that he wasn’t surprised at all by the news. He also thinks that all of the criticism that Dillashaw has received is deserved.

“I wasn’t surprised at all that he finally got caught,” Benavidez told MMAJunkie. “Wasn’t surprising at all. There’s nothing I can really say as far as, like, that hasn’t already been said. I’m not gonna sit here and say the guy is this and that because if you look at the internet and everyone, it’s already been said. So there’s nothing worse you can say than what everyone already thinks, which I think is warranted. Everything that people are out there giving him, it’s 100 percent warranted for what he did.”

Consequences

According to Benavidez, he thinks that this news just goes to show the true character of Dillashaw. He also thinks that Dillashaw should be happy, as he got off easy from USADA.

“It just goes to show, there’s consequences for what you do and you can’t hide who you are forever,” Benavidez said. “I’m surprised it took that long for him to get caught, and hid what he’s about this long. But you can’t hide that stuff forever. It’s great that it came out. There are consequences and if anything, I don’t think the consequences are that much.

“It’s not that bad. Get some surgeries. You got paid the day after the fight anyway. So it’s not like you’re getting suspended for the year. But like I said, it’s all the other things. All the disgrace and everything that is warranted, and maybe hurts more. Like I said, the truth will come out at some point and you can’t hide that stuff forever.”

Benavidez is expected to face Jussier Formiga in a rematch on June 29, 2019, at UFC Minneapolis.

TJ Dillashaw getting shoulder surgeries done while serving his suspension.

The former UFC bantamweight champion mentioned in a recent post on his official Instagram account that he just had surgery on his right shoulder. After he recovers, he plans to get another surgery done in two months on his left shoulder. He wrote the following in the caption of the photo:

“Battle scars added to my hawk. Surgery went well, torn rotator cuff, labrum and some biceps tendon repair. Two months from now I’m getting my left shoulder done, it’s the worst of the two. The recovery time is long and sucks but it will be nice to have them finally fixed. Been needing these surgeries for three years now.”

Dillashaw recently accepted a two-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Dillashaw was caught with EPO in his system and is ineligible to compete until January 2021.

Dillashaw noticed that some people commented on the post where they suggested that he might consider not posting for a while and let time pass due to ‘all the haters.’ This led to Dillashaw responding by writing the following:

“Let em I made the mistake. If talking to someone like that is what makes them feel better that’s on them.”

2008 Olympic wrestling gold medalist and current flyweight champion Henry Cejudo isn’t about to sacrifice his morality for the fight game.

“The Messenger” defeated T.J. Dillashaw in January to retain his flyweight strap. Since then, Dillashaw has tested positive for EPO twice, been suspended by USADA for two years, and relinquished his 135-pound title.

It’s been a stunning fall from grace for Dillashaw, who was beginning to creep into the conversation for pound-for-pound best. The performance-enhancing connection is going to be hard for Dillashaw to escape moving forward.

Due to that, Cejudo recently said if and when Dillashaw does return, he wouldn’t fight him again. It has nothing to do with money for “The Messenger,” it’s all about character.

“I’ll never fight him again, dude,” Cejudo said backstage at UFC 236 (via MMAJunkie). “And I’m not, it’s not like I’m scared or whatnot. I shook his hand, and, this is a sport. This isn’t baseball – you’re not hitting a baseball, there’s another human being, dude, so I want no part of him.”

“It doesn’t matter what they’re going to offer me, what they’re going to give me. In my eyes, T.J., there’s bad intentions, literally. There’s no desire for me to want the fight. I’ve always been drug-free.”

Cejudo, like everyone else, has heard the rumors about Dillashaw and doping. However, he gave the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) runner-up the benefit of the doubt.

“I’ve heard on T.J., and I really never brought it up, he was on supposedly in the days prior to USADA, even Cody (Garbrandt), himself, was like, ‘Hey, watch out dude, he’s dirty,’” Cejudo said. “People would come up to me, and I never really brought it up because I thought that that part of MMA is over, but I think once you find out he’s on it, it’s like, this dude ain’t playing fair.”

“It’s a little dirty man. It’s not good for our sport. He could have hurt me.”

Cejudo will now his attention to Marlon Moraes and the bantamweight title. The two fighters verbally got into it at the UFC’s Seasonal Press Conference on Friday.

“Marlon Moraes, man, he’s a dead man walking,” Cejudo said. “That’s all I can tell you guys. He is a dead man walking, Every day, I cannot allow the UFC to have someone who looks like Mr. Clean and talks like Michael Jackson. I can’t have a schmo. I cannot have it.”

“It’s animosity, dude. He’s trying to take my dream. He’s trying to take my legacy from me. I’m not going to allow that.”
