TJ Dillashaw insists on having a rematch against UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo after his failed attempt to become a two-division champion.

This comes after Cejudo finished the UFC bantamweight champion to successfully retain the UFC flyweight title in the headliner of UFC on ESPN+ 1. This event down on January 19, 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It all goes back to the early stoppage, which is what many people thought happened. The sequence saw Dillashaw being rocked twice and dropped before being finished on the ground. The expectation is that Cejudo will move up a weight class in order to do an immediate rematch against Dillashaw to challenge for the bantamweight title.

During an appearance on Joe Rogan’s MMA podcast, Dillashaw made it known that he’s still looking to get a rematch against Cejudo.

“I felt the best I’ve ever felt before I walked out before the fight,” Dillashaw said (H/T to MMAJunkie). “That’s just another reason why I’m so bitter about this thing, because I didn’t get to show the work that I put in. I didn’t get to show all the science behind Sam Calavitta and what he did with my body. I was stronger for this fight than I was my last Cody (Garbrandt) fight. I walked out two pounds heavier for this fight than I did my last Cody fight. Before I started warming up I weighed 149.”

“He’s been in talks with Hunter (Campbell) and Dana (White) I hope to figure out something soon, because I’ll fight tomorrow,” Dillashaw said. “I’ll fight Henry at whatever weight he wants. Obviously I would prefer ’25 because of all the work, and I want to show I know what I’m doing, and that this was a fluke.”

Raphael Assuncao says current UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw deserved to lose in his attempt to become a two-division champion.

Assuncao is slated to fight former WSOF Champion Marlon Moraes in a bantamweight bout that will serve as the headline of UFC on ESPN+ 2. The winner of Moraes and Assuncao will likely challenge Dillashaw for the bantamweight throne next.

Henry Cejudo finished the UFC bantamweight champion to successfully retain the UFC flyweight title in the headliner of UFC on ESPN+ 1. This event down on January 19, 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“The champion needs to get his stuff together and defend his title,” Assuncao told MMAjunkie. “Now they’re talking about a title defense against Cejudo, so that kind of complicates things a little bit. I think T.J. should’ve stayed at his weight and done what he was supposed to do at 135. He went down to 125, and now I’m sure he regrets what happened. He should’ve stayed at his weight class and taken responsibility at his weight class.

“Just like when I should’ve fought for the title before and Cody (Garbrandt) took my place. It didn’t go well twice for him. In the back of my mind, I don’t want to be a hater, but it’s like, ‘See, that’s what you get.’ It should’ve been my turn. Same with T.J. That’s what you get when you should’ve defended your own title.”

UFC on ESPN+ 2 is set to take place on Saturday,  February 2, 2019 at Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil.

The sport’s most famous referee and modern day MMA renaissance man “Big” John McCarthy has weighed in on the Henry Cejudo vs. T.J. Dillashaw stoppage.

The world leader in MMA made their anticipated debut on the ESPN platforms last weekend. The evening culminated with Cejudo mowing down Dillashaw in just 32 seconds. To say that referee Kevin MacDonald’s stoppage has been controversial may be an understatement.

MMA Fighting‘s Marc Raimondi caught up with McCarthy at Bellator 214’s media day yesterday. “Big” John had something to say.

“When you say ‘good stoppage, bad stoppage,’ I’m not into saying what’s good or bad. Kevin made a decision. It’s his decision, he’s the one that’s got to live with his decision, along with TJ and the UFC themselves.

“If you’re going to ask me, there’s things that I want a referee to think about,” he continued. “If you’re going to ask me would I have stopped it at that point, no. I wouldn’t have stopped it at that point. This is the reason why: this is not a fight between two guys who are just brought together like ‘oh we’re going to match this fight up,’ whatever fight it is. It’s not, you know, Fighter A against Fighter B.”

Huge Fight

McCarthy continued on that they were fighting for the future of the UFC flyweight division. That gave the fight more weight according to McCarthy.

”This is a fight where both guys have earned the right to be in the position. They’ve both created a background that’s put them in the position of being champions, and now these are champions going after each other — one to save his entire weight class basically, the other to prove ‘those guys are not as good as me.’”
