Jon Jones hits out at Tom Aspinall calls to be stripped of UFC title you think you can call the shots

Jon Jones has scotched calls from interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall for him to be stripped of his heavyweight crown amid his period of inactivity through injury, claiming the Atherton native should not think he can already call shots just three years into his UFC tenure.

Jones, a current heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound number one, was scheduled to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 295 last month at Madison Square Garden, with a pectoral tendon tear ruling the Endicott native from a championship defense against the returning Stipe Miocic.

As a result, the above-mentioned, Aspinall featured on the card in a short-notice interim title fight with Russian knockout artist, Sergei Pavlovich, stopping the division contender with a blistering opening round knockout win of his own.

And maintaining he would fight the above-mentioned, Miocic in Jones’ absence from the Octagon through injury, Aspinall made calls for the former two-time light heavyweight champion, to be stripped of his heavyweight title to boot.

Taking issue with Aspinall’s requests to UFC CEO, Dana White – who claimed Jones would be fighting Miocic in his return to active competition, the former urged the British heavyweight to cool his jets on talk of forced relinquishing.

“I’ve faced the absolute toughest competition this would had to offer for 15 years now,” Jon Jones posted on his official X account. “During camp for a title defense I sustained a major injury that required surgery for the first time in my career. Now I have newcomers requesting I get my championship stripped. Zero wins over legends, zero title defenses, and already thinking you can call the shots to Dana, that’s hilarious.”

“In my 15 year career I have seen so many guys who are supposed to be the next big thing,” Jon Jones continued. “There’s ever only been one Jon Jones, never forget that.”

Dana White remains firm on Jon Jones - Stipe Miocic title fight next it has to happen UFC

Amid calls from newly-minted interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall for fellow division gold holder, Jon Jones to be stripped of his crown amid his absence through injury, UFC CEO, Dana White claims the Endicott native must stand opposite former championship holder, Stipe Miocic in his return to the Octagon first and foremost.

Jones, the current heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound number one, was scheduled to headlined UFC 295 at the beginning of last month in a Madison Square Garden homecoming, however, a brutal pectoral tendon tear suffered ahead of a slated bout with ex-titleholder, Miocic, forced the shelving of the blockbuster clash.

And as a result, an interim title was once again introduced into the heavyweight division, with the above-mentioned Atherton native, Aspinall landing the interim crown with a blistering opening round KO win over Russian contender, Sergei Pavlovich in a co-main event tile clash.

In the weeks following his title victory in New York, Aspinall has called for both Jon Jones to be stripped of the heavyweight title, and called for his own title fight with former two-time champion, Miocic, claiming he wants to feature in some capacity at a monumental UFC 300 card in April of next year.

However, as far as White is concerned, Aspinall’s hopes are set to fall on deaf ears, with the promotional CEO confirming Jones will make good on plans to fight Miocic in his return to the Octagon first and foremost.

“The Stipe (Miocic) fight has to happen,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Austin. “You know, both of those guys deserve it. Jon – you’ve got the greatest mixed martial artist of all time versus the greatest heavyweight of all time. And they’ve paid their dues, they’ve done the thing. These two wanna fight each other. It’s gonna happen.”

“Whoever wins, we’ll see what they decide to do after that,” White continued. “And then we’ll go from there.”

Tom Aspinall scoffs at Ciryl Gane call out as soon as I get the title he wants to fight me UFC

Newly-minted interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall has labelled a recent call out from former interim gold holder, Ciryl Gane “ironic” – claiming the Frenchman has now only wants to fight him, since he landed the interim title last month at UFC 295.

Aspinall, the current interim heavyweight titleholder, co-headlined UFC 295 at the beginning of last month at Madison Square Garden, landing the interim crown with a spectacular opening round knockout win over Russian striking phenom, Sergei Pavlovich in the pair’s interim title affair.

As for Gane, the former interim heavyweight champion headlined UFC Fight Night Paris back in September, retaining the number two rank in the division with a blistering TKO win over Moldovan common-foe, Sergei Spivak.

And receiving a recent call out from the Frenchman following his interim title success against Pavlovich, the above-mentioned, Atherton native, Aspinall has claimed it’s now “ironic” how Gane wants to challenge him, only since he landed interim spoils.

“It’s pretty ironic, he (Ciryl Gane) loves trying to do the most little amount of work to get the biggest rewards possible,” Tom Aspinall told Mirror Fighting. “I understand, because I do as well but it’s very strange that I called him out for a long time and then as soon as I get the title he wants to fight me. We’ll see what happens, we are going to fight each other one day so it’s all good.”

“I think every fight is a tough fight at the minute,” Tom Aspinall explained. “If you look at the rankings, I am ranked number one in the world but if you are top 10 in the world, you are really, really good. We can all beat each other on any given day. There is not that much between us all, we have tiny gloves and are massive guys. Anything can happen at anytime.”

Jon Jones opens as betting favorite to beat Tom Aspinall ahead of UFC 295 title fight

Despite the fact he has been forced from a UFC 295 heavyweight championship fight this weekend, Jon Jones has opened as a sizeable betting favorite over incoming interim title challenger, Tom Aspinall, as fans clamor to see a fight between the two in the future.

Jones, the current undisputed heavyweight champion and current pound-for-pound number one fighter on the organization’s books, was slated to headline UFC 295 this weekend at Madison Square Garden, taking on the returning former two-time titleholder, Stipe Miocic, until an injury forced him from the bout.

Snapping a three-year-plus hiatus from the sport back in March, Endicott native, Jon Jones suffered a pectoral tendon tear ahead of his UFC 295 title fight with Miocic, forcing him from the flagship event, and resulting in the introduction of an interim heavyweight championship into the division.

As for Aspinall, the Atherton native will now challenge surging Russian heavyweight knockout artist, Sergei Pavlovich in an interim title fight – with the victor expected to face either Jones or Miocic next year in a title unification bout, with the latter pairing earmarked to be rebooked once Jones returns from injury.

However, a slew of markets are already offering odds on a future fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall – with the former opening as a -195 betting favorite to beat the British heavyweight, who is a current +165 betting underdog.

If onlooking punters or bettors are looking to place bets – both prop and outright on this weekend’s action at UFC 295 in ‘The Big Apple’, they can check the proven casinos with high payouts before so, in order to determine the best markets and bookies to stick their bets on with.

Landing the vacant heavyweight crown at UFC 285 back in March, Jon Jones returned for the first time since 2020 – stopping former interim heavyweight champion and French favorite, Ciryl Gane with a blistering opening round guillotine choke – adding to a trophy cabinet which also boasts two separate runs at undisputed light heavyweight champion.

Himself returning to the Octagon back in July of this year on home soil atop a UFC Fight Night London card, Briton contender, Aspinall turned in a spectacular first round knockout win over Marcin Tybura at The O2 Arena – having suffered a debilitating knee injury the year prior in another main event bout against Curtis Blaydes.

During his initial winning run under the banner of the Dana White-led promotion, Aspinall, the current number four ranked contender picked up notable victories over the likes of Sergei Spivak, and Alexander Volkov, as well as a submission win over former undisputed heavyweight champion, Andrei Arlovski.

Tasked with surmounting the challenge that is Sergei Pavlovich this weekend in Madison Square Garden, Aspinall would become just the second fighter in the promotion to defeat the former Fight Nights Global champion, who dropped a knockout loss to Alistair Overeem in his Octagon debut.

Also featured on UFC 295 this weekend; a vacant light heavyweight title fight featuring former Octagon champions, Jiri Prochazka, and Alex Pereira is set to take main event honors in the organization’s return to New York City.

Following the announcement of their impromptu interim heavyweight title fight at UFC 295 next month, Tom Aspinall has opened as a narrow betting favorite to beat six-fight riser, Sergei Pavlovich at Madison Square Garden, and land interim divisional spoils.

Aspinall, the current number four ranked heavyweight contender, is slated to make his second Octagon walk of the year – on just two weeks notice, following a triumphant return from a brutal knee injury, with a July knockout win over Polish veteran, Marcin Tybura in London.

As for Pavlovich, the surging number two rated heavyweight challenger has enjoyed a stunning six-fight winning run since dropping a knockout loss to Alistair Overeem in his Octagon bow – most recently wrapping up a first round KO win over perennial contender and common-foe, Curtis Blaydes back in April.

However, despite Pavlovich’s roughshod run through contenders en route to a top-spot in the heavyweight pile, the Russian has opened and is currently sitting as a +110 betting underdog to defeat Tom Aspinall – with the UK heavyweight still sitting as a betting favorite on many markets as high as -130.

A host of online sportsbooks and online betting sites are offering odds and prop bets on Tom Aspinall’s interim heavyweight title fight with Pavlovich next month in Madison Square Garden, as the two gear up for their first crack at promotional spoils.

Returning from a brutal knee injury back in July of this year, Atherton native, Aspinall would score a first round knockout win over the above-mentioned, Tybura having dropping a opening round TKO due to a gruesome and brutal knee injury in July of last year, in a homecoming fight against common-foe, Blaydes in London.

The injury setback came as Cage Warriors alum, Tom Aspinall’s first loss under the banner of the UFC, having rode a winning streak over Jake Collier, Alan Baudot, former champion, Andrei Arlovski, as well as Sergey Spivak, and Alexander Volkov – the most recent of which via a first round straight armbar submission.

18-1 as a professional, former Fight Nights Global heavyweight titleholder, Pavlovich debuted in the Octagon with a first round knockout loss to former title challenger, Alistair Overeem back in 2018 in Beijing – before landing a slew of consecutive finish victories.

Of note in his three most recent wins, Pavlovich turned in opening minute knockout wins over both Derrick Lewis, and Tai Tuivasa, before cannoning through Blaydes with a blistering opening round stoppage via strikes in his headlining premier back in April of this year.

As well as Aspinall’s interim title fight with Pavlovich at UFC 295 in November, the monumental New York card also features a massive vacant light heavyweight championship fight between former Octagon gold holders, Alex Pereira, and Jiri Prochazka – in a headlining clash in ‘The Big Apple’.

Aspinall’s return against Pavlovich takes place in place of a previously slated heavyweight title fight clash between incumbent undisputed gold holder, Jon Jones, and former two-time gold holder, Stipe Miocic, until an injury ruled the pound-for-pound number one from the homecoming event.
