Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has revealed he has been approached with an offer to serve as an opposing coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter – serving opposite former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, who also revealed this week how he had been approached regarding a feature on the show.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, slumped to his fifth consecutive loss back in September of last year in the main event of UFC 279, suffering a fourth round guillotine choke loss to common-foe, Nate Diaz.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion has been sidelined since July 2021, where he suffered a fractured left tibia and fibula, resulting in a doctor’s stoppage loss to Dustin Poirier

Tony Ferguson reveals offer to coach on TUF against Conor McGregor

Making a welterweight division excursion in his loss to Diaz, having seen a previously scheduled fight with Li Jingliang for the same UFC 279 event shelved, Tony Ferguson has revealed he was approached regarding an opportunity to coach TUF against Conor McGregor.

“I’ve been asked to coach on TUF against ol’e fathead, or anyone of my choosing if that cake-eatin’ sum’bish’ wouldn’t show *mack*,” Tony Ferguson posted on Instagram. “What a vagina. I’m always ready anytime anywhere. I choose you McKancker @thenotoriousmma (Conor McGregor) see ewe soon thee champ -cso- #MyMat.”

Winning The Ultimate Fighter 13 at the welterweight limit back in June 2011, Ferguson managed to stop Ramsey Nijem with a first round knockout. Ferguson had been apart of the former UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar’s team.

Without a victory since January 2020, McGregor’s most recently stopped former lightweight title challenger, Donald Cerrone with a high-kick knockout, while Ferguson’s most recent win came against the Denver native to boot, courtesy of a 2019 doctor’s stoppage triumph.

It’s a hard pill to swallow, but Tony Ferguson has now lost eight fights in a row. Justin Gaethje broke his iconic 12-fight win streak in the UFC lightweight division and most recently, he lost to Michael Chiesa via submission at UFC Abu Dhabi.

Ferguson was naturally overwhelmed by the loss but he didn’t lay down both his gloves in the Octagon. He was unsure about retirement and kept a glove just in case an exciting fight opportunity emerges.

If he returns to the Octagon for one last ride, Jon Anik has the perfect opponent for Ferguson…

Jon Anik Expects Tony Ferguson To Find Success Against Fellow UFC Lightweight Veteran Joe Lauzon

Anik recently appeared on Submission Radio on YouTube and talked about Ferguson’s career as of late. He credited “El Cucuy” for making a double-digit win streak in a competitive division like lightweight, and admitted how the eight losses on this record baffle him.

“The rainbow-colored nature of Tony Ferguson’s Wikipedia page, bro. I mean, it is indeed crazy to see 12 green stripes followed by eight red stripes.”

Anik wants to see Ferguson in the UFC Hall of Fame as soon as possible. He isn’t keen on seeing the veteran fight again but suggested that Joe Lauzon could be a viable option for his upcoming and most likely, final, bout.

“I was googling Joe Lauzon to make sure that he never fought Tony Ferguson because as I sit here and think about opponents that might make sense for Tony to try to realize some sort of success. Joe Lauzon still has fights left on his contract and for whatever reason, hasn’t competed, but I think that fight makes some sense”

Lauzon made his debut in the UFC in 2006 and is a veteran with over 25 fights under his belt. He holds wins over Jens Pulver, Jeremy Stephens, Chiesa, and Diego Sanchez, among other notable lightweight fighters.

The UFC commentator highlighted that Lauzon still has fights on his UFC contract. However, he hasn’t fought for the promotion since October 2019 so it’s hard to anticipate whether he would return for a bout with Ferguson.

Michael Johnson UFC Tony Ferguson

Having previously defeated former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson back in 2012, lightweight division staple, Michael Johnson has offered the Oxnard veteran an opportunity to avenge his loss 11 years later, and also snap his run of five consecutive losses.

Featuring on a UFC on Fox card in New Jersey back in 2012, Ferguson suffered his first promotional loss in the form of a unanimous decision defeat to Johnson, fracturing his forearm during the contest after blocking a kick.

Ferguson, a former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, would embark on a division-tying run of 12 fights undefeated in the eight years following the loss to Johnson, including his interim title success.

However, in the last three years, Tony Ferguson has slumped to five consecutive losses, including defeats against Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, and most recently, Nate Diaz in September of last year.

For Johnson, the once surging lightweight contender who also holds wins over another former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier courtesy of a 2016 UFC Fight Night Hidalgo main event KO, has experienced a topsy-turvy Octagon tenure.

Returning at UFC Fight NIght Orlando back in December of last year, Johnson returned to the winner’s enclosure with a close, unanimous decision win over former UK lightweight, Marc Diakiese.

Michael Johnson offers Tony Ferguson a rematch of their 2012 matchup

Offering Tony Ferguson a rematch in their next respective Octagon walks, Johnson claimed fans would be interested in seeing the duo rematch.

“Yo @TonyFergusonXT not sure if you’re still in the big game, but if so and you want to come back to ‘55 I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself,” Michael Johnson tweeted. “Or we can do it 170 also!! Let’s give the fans what they want!!!!”

Winning interim lightweight gold back in October 2017, Ferguson submitted promotional alum, Kevin Lee with a third round triangle in the main event of UFC 216.

Nick Diaz explains why he doesn’t like Tony Ferguson’s ‘Obnoxious’ fighting style: ‘It’s like a spastic type’

Former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is one of the most beloved fan favorites in the sport of mixed martial arts due to his exciting fighting style and the incredible success he had with it from 2013 to 2019. Nick Diaz however is not one of those people that enjoys the way Ferguson fights.

Nick Diaz recently stated the following in an interview when asked about the former interim champion’s fighting style:

“No, I don’t like it. It’s obnoxious. Yeah, I can’t stand that type of style. I mean I’m not gonna knock it because that’s what you have to do. In general, it’s like a spastic type of person (who) makes up (for) a lack of technique with those types of tactics. You have to avoid those tactics and it’s an annoying type of guy to fight.”

“That’s mixed martial arts for you, though. But just because it’s mixed martial arts, doesn’t mean that you should depend on these tactics that you’re allowed to do. If you have a strong base and you throw those in, then it’s one thing, but a lot of times people will make up for their lack of strong base and technique with stuff like what he does.”

From 2013 to 2019, Ferguson racked up 12-straight wins, securing nine finishes, along with the interim title he was wrongfully stripped of.

Tony Ferguson was unfortunately never given his crack at undisputed gold, and has since lost his last five-straight fights following his record-tying (at the time) win streak, the last of which coming to Nick Diaz’ little brother Nate. He’s the first UFC lightweight to ever win 12-straight fights, and the 12th-straight win improved him to 15-1 in the UFC.

Diaz on the other hand left the sport in 2015 following his fight with former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. That was his first fight in nearly two years as well, and we wouldn’t see him compete again until September of 2021 when he fought former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 266.

Diaz KO’d Lawler in round two the first time around, but would get TKO’d in round three of the rematch. He has since expressed an interest in returning to the octagon this year in 2023.

Who would you like to see Nick Diaz face upon return?
