Dan Hooker

Lightweight contender Dan Hooker is more than willing to replace Dustin Poirier and fight Tony Ferguson according to his coach Eugene Baremen. ‘The Diamond’ was supposed to square off against Ferguson at UFC 254 on October 24 but that fight has fallen through as Poirier failed to come to financial terms with the UFC for the bout.

Speaking to Submission Radio The Head Coach from Auckland’s City Kickboxing revealed Hooker is willing to square off against Ferguson at UFC 254 although he would advise against it, he said.

“October is a bit early for us, otherwise we would jump in there straight away for sure. But if they can push it back. Dan just got off concussion protocol now, so of this week. So, he’s only just started back training. So, obviously October might be a hard push. He would do it. I would have to talk him out of it, but he would probably do it one hundred percent. But Dan’s just back now, he’s getting fit again, it’s good to have him back in the gym. So, yeah, if they can’t come to terms, and it sounds like they haven’t come to terms, then we’ll jump in there and fight Tony for sure.”

Hooker is coming off a loss to Poirier last time out. The two lightweight fighters went to war over five round with the former interim lightweight champion edging it out on the judge’s scorecards.

‘El Cuccy’ also suffered defeat in his last outing. The TUF champion snapped his 12-fight win streak against late-replacement opponent Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in May. Ferguson was originally set to finally square off against lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov before the coronavirus pandemic derailed those plans. The 36-year-old instead squared off against Gaethje who put on a striking clinic before ultimately getting the fifth round TKO victory over Ferguson.

Dustin Poirier

Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has suggested his eagerly anticipated fight against Tony Ferguson is back on.

Poirier was expected to face off against ‘El Cuccy’ at UFC 254 on October 24 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Dana White had got fans excited about the possible match-up after confirming to media Poirier was “probably” the man who would welcome Ferguson back to the Octagon for the first time since his lopsided loss against Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.

Unfortunately, last week thing his a snag. Poirier revealed negotiations where currently being held up as the UFC refused to meet his asking price for the fight, he said.

“I’m in. I just need to be compensated if they want this fight. Simple as that I’m a prize fighter and the prize needs to be right.”

Speaking with ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani on Thursday (September 10), Poirier confirmed his targeted pairing with Ferguson was put on the backburner.

“UFC and I did not come to terms. I will not be fighting on October 24.”

Things seem to have changed for the better over the weekend. Poirier took to social media on Monday morning with a much more positive message regarding his fight against Ferguson, he wrote.

“Tony’s the type of guy who would manage his opponent and get him a new contract for the fight to happen.”

Poirier is coming off an impressive win over Dan Hooker. ‘The Diamond’ went to war with his opponent and emerged victoriously after five rounds of fighting. Prior to that he lost a lightweight unification fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September 2019.

Ferguson snapped his 12-fight winning run last time out, suffering a fifth round TKO loss at the hands of Gaethje. Prior to that he was the certified lightweight number one contender for year. During his prolonged win streak ‘El Cucuy’ picked up wins over the likes of Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Kevin Lee, Rafael Dos Anjos and Edson Barboza. He was only denied a shot at lightweight king Nurmagomedov by pure bad luck.

Ben Askren Slams Dustin Poirier For His UFC 254 Fight Cancellation

Ben Askren has been keeping himself relevant since retiring around this time last year, and he’s got someone else to say some choice words about. As we’ve heard, Dustin Poirier versus Tony Ferguson is no longer happening.

This started when Poirier had the following to say to ESPN yesterday:

“I’m in. I’m at American Top Team. I just need to be compensated if they want this fight, simple as that. I’m a prize fighter and the prize needs to be right.”

He then told ESPN earlier today that the negotiations didn’t work out:

“UFC and I didn’t come to terms. I will not be fighting on Oct. 24.”

ESPN also reported that Poirier will be heading home to Lafayette, Louisiana next week. This is incredibly unfortunate considering how great of a card this is, hopefully they can figure something out.

Former multiple-time Bellator and ONE Championship Welterweight Champion Ben Askren had some input to add to this situation.

“Dumb, Poirier could’ve gained a ton by winning this fight. Gotta bet on the home team sometimes.”

It’d be a true shame if they don’t end up working this out. Dana White stated that this was a backup for the title fight on the card, in case anything should happen, and it’s pretty obviously a No. 1 contender fight.

With everything Poirier’s done in his career, from the wars he had with Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez twice, Justin Gaethje, Cub Swanson, Chan Sung Jung, Max Holloway, Dan Hooker, to everyone he’s knocked out, he deserves to be paid accordingly.

He’s improved so much throughout his career, from coming to the UFC and battering Josh Grispi, who everyone thought was the future, to everything he’s done since. Poirier’s one of the very best fighters on the entire planet.

If they end up working this issue out, which they should becuase of everything Poirier’s done for them, we’ll have an incredible night of fights to look forward to. The fight card as of now is posted below:
