Junior-Dos-Santos_Things looked grim for the UFC’s top heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos. With an upcoming title bout with champion Cain Velasquez sidelined for up to a year, “Cigano” was likely looking at being put on the shelf also having to wait for Valesquez’ return.

Luckily for him, and fans, the UFC offered him a coaching job opposite Brock Lesnar on the upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter” and it was an offer the Brazilian jumped at.

Speaking to Portal do Vale Tudo, dos Santos is looking forward to coaching on the reality TV series and relishes the chance to impart some of his knowledge on new fighters.

“I liked the choice and opportunity to be the coach of the reality show will be a great challenge. My English is not 100% but I will do my best and I’m sure I’d be good…he Lesnar is a tough guy, is great. It is different from Cain Velasquez, because it is larger but is a bit slower, but it is as dangerous as Cain. It will be different, but I’ll keep working the same, which is the takedown defense and my boxing…

“I’m still picking my team. The Dorea will be the coach of boxing, Billy, an American friend, should be the coach of MuayThai. I’m thinking of someone else’s Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling and Rodrigo is perhaps the wrestling, which is very good, and speaks both Portuguese and English, which helps in communication. I think early next week we will have the full team.”

Filming for the reality series begins later this month and the series will start broadcasting episodes in March. Both men will meet in Vancouver on June 11th with the winner going on to fight Velasquez for the UFC heavyweight title.

Brock Lesnar_Death Clutch 2Well it was certainly an exciting announcement on Tuesday when UFC President Dana White named UFC heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos as the season 13 coaches for “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Lesnar does not have the best record when dealing with the media in the past and having him on camera for six weeks straight could prove explosive. Added to the fact that some have questioned the former champions will to keep fighting, which leaves some wondering if White made the right choice in naming Lesnar as one of the shows coaches.

White announced the coaches on Tuesday during a media call for the UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 event and was immediately hounded with questions concerning his choice of Lesnar as coach.

“In dealing with Brock, one minute, he can be into something, and the next minute, he can completely be not into something. I’m already prepared for this, mentally, and it’s gonna be a tough season. I know it is…The guy’s a former world champion, has beat guys and held the title. No matter what his record is, what the guy has accomplished in the short amount of time that he’s been in MMA is incredible. To say the guy doesn’t have the credentials to coach ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ is probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.”

Brock Lesnar UFC 116 ufc_comOn Tuesday afternoon UFC President Dana White announced the two opposing coaches for season 13 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Coaching opposite one another will be heavyweights Brock Lesnar (5-2) and Junior “Cigano” dos Santos (12-1).

Filming for The upcoming season will air on March 30 while filming begins at the end of this month. Both fighters will meet in the octagon in June and the winner will then move on to face the current champ Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title.

“It’s gonna be a very interesting six weeks of filming,” said White during a media teleconference Tuesday. “These two will coach, then they’ll fight, and the winner of the fight will fight Cain Velasquez when he’s healthy.”

“The guy’s a former world champion, he’s beat guys and held the title,” said White of Lesnar. “No matter what his record is, what the guy has accomplished in the short amount of time that he’s been in MMA is incredible. He’s obviously got a lot that he can teach, and not only him, but the staff that he has around him have a lot to teach young, up and coming guys, and that’s what it’s really all about.”

“Junior dos Santos is a young, up and coming guy,” said White of dos Santos. “He’s been knocking everybody out, comes off a three round war with “Big Country” (Roy Nelson) and I love when guys do that because it’s good for them, it’s good experience, it gets them in better shape and it takes them to another level. And to put this guy on the shelf for a long time is ridiculous, and much credit to him for not wanting to go on the shelf.”

Lesnar is coming off a title loss to Velasquez last October at UFC 121, while dos Santos earned his seventh straight victory by defeating Roy Nelson by unanimous decision at UFC 117.

miguel-torresFormer World Extreme Bantamweight champion Miguel Torres (38-3) has apparently been contacted to coach the upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter” according to FightersOnlyMagazine.co.uk.

Sources close to the situation confirmed to Fighters Only on Friday that Torres’ name has been in the mix and that he has been spoken to about the possibility, although nothing was confirmed during the talks.

UFC president Dana White stated recently that he’d know who the coaches were by Friday (yesterday) but he wouldn’t necessarily be releasing that information just yet.

“The California Kid” Urijah Faber has been rumored to be one of the coaches for the event, and a “TUF” show featuring some of the bigger known WEC personalities could be a great introduction to those not familiar with the smaller fighters.

At his past Thursday’s WEC 53 post fight press conference, bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz was asked by the media if he’d consider coaching on the reality show opposite Faber. The first UFC 135 lbs champ said he’d love a shot to coach on the show and it would give him a chance to avenge his only loss. Cruz said he’d delay having surgery for his hand to coach on the show.

What transpires over the coming weeks is anyone’s guess, but it’s certain that until the UFC makes some sort of official announcement that rumors will persist as to who the next to coaches for “The Ultimate Fighter” could be.

Dominick CruzGLENDALE, Ariz. – Now that he’s the UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz seems to already be settling into Company Man status – but he hopes a lingering hand injury can get fixed sooner rather than later.

After dominating Scott Jorgensen for a five-round unanimous decision on Thursday at the finale WEC event, WEC 53 at Jobing.com Arena outside Phoenix, Cruz (17-1, 7-1 WEC) said he’ll know next week whether or not surgery on his hand will happen right away, putting him out for several months, or if it will be delayed.

“I work for the UFC now, and I pretty much do what I’m told,” Cruz said at Thursday’s post-fight press conference. “But at the same time, I’ve been going into these last two fights with a hand injury that needs to be addressed so that I can continue to fight at the level that I’m fighting – because it’s something that’s just going to get worse if I don’t get it taken care of.”

Dana-WhiteThe last several weeks have seen a ton of rumor and speculation as to who the coaches for the upcoming thirteenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series.

UFC president Dana White is still trying to figure out which two fighters it will be, but after a comment today at the press conference in Brazil, they should have it figured out by the end of the week.

“We could have it done by Friday.”

That statement could be heavily tied into Thursday’s WEC 53 event with the bantamweight title fight between Dominick Cruz vs. Scott Jorgensen, with the winner possibly coaching against Urijah Faber and eventually squaring off for the UFC bantamweight title.

Other names that have been thrown around over the past few weeks include Wanderlei Silva/Chael Sonnen and Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir.

And just because the UFC brass has identified who the two coaches will be doesn’t mean they’ll be letting the fans know, as White said they’d be keeping that information to themselves for awhile.
