Former super middleweight king and light heavyweight titlist Andre Ward believes Deontay Wilder will avoid taking a third fight with Tyson Fury. The 36-year-old boxing great turned pundit expressed his belief after seeing power puncher Wilder suffer a dominating defeat at the hands of ‘The Gypsy King’. Speaking to ESPN post-fight the 168lb legend explained why Wilder wont and shouldn’t invoke his rematch clause, he said.
“These types
of things can happen to anybody, but they happen often times to guys who
exclusively depend on one thing and we know what that is for Deontay Wilder and
that’s power. ‘He’s building his whole reputation, his whole foundation, on
fear. When you have that kind of reputation and when you have all these
knockouts, sometimes your team can become enamoured with you. ‘Instead of
challenging you and saying, ‘Son, you may fire me, but I’m going to point out
every flaw you have because one day we’re going to face a guy who’s not going
to follow the script’.
“Tonight,
Tyson Fury did not follow the script. And often times for a puncher the fall is
abrupt, and we saw that tonight. ‘I don’t believe that Deontay Wilder is going
to exercise that rematch clause in the next 30 days. His pride will tell him
to, but I don’t think he will and I don’t think he should.’ Asked why, he
continued: ‘He’s shattered psychologically. Now that doesn’t mean he won’t ever
win a boxing match ever again. But I know the psychology of a guy with that
kind of reputation.
“When it’s taken from you. He could have justified getting hit with a big shot and say he was caught cold, but you got beat up, you got out-classed and you got stopped on your feet. ‘Your team, the ones who are your biggest cheerleaders, the ones who are calling out all the good in you, thought enough of you to throw in the towel. ‘And not just any team member, but one who had a career in the sport of boxing, has been knocked out before. He knew what Wilder was going through and he saved him from getting knocked out cold.” (Transcribed by The Metro)

Welterweight contender Mike Perry emerged victorious against Al Iaquinta at Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground 11. The event touted as the future of grappling by the former middleweight title challenger was headlined by a tag-team match up between Kyle Boehm and Vinny Magalhaes against Craig Jones and Nicky Rodriguez. However, it was the UFC stars who enjoyed a heated rivalry who attracted the most attention.
In round one it was ‘Raging Al’ started off better securing a takedown almost immediately. Perry responded well off his back though, going after an arm bar submission which forced his opponent to slam for the escape. Back on the feet Iaquinta again secured the takedown and was again forced to defend submission attempts – this time a leg lock. After some time trying to secure the submission Perry eventually released and the two fighters ended regulation time in a stalemate on the feet.
The first over time saw Iaquinta start on his opponents back, however he was unable to secure the upper body and Perry quickly escaped. ‘Platinum’ also opted to start on his opponents back and did a much better job at maintaining position. He worked hard to secure the rear-naked-choke but ultimately had to settle for two minutes of top position.
In the second period, Iaquinta
again started on the back and surprising went after a twister submission.
However, after just 17 seconds the referee said Perry was out of trouble and
awarded him the escape. Iaquinta kept the bout alive by quickly escaping
himself – just 23 seconds was all it took to get out of Perry’s seatbelt position.
During the final overtime period Iaquinta started from the spider armbar setup and nearly extended the limb, but a gutsy effort saw Perry work out of the submission in just 14 seconds for another quick escape. Despite being thrown off during his attacking period in 10 seconds Perry had already done enough to secure the win by fastest escape.

John Fury, father and former trainer of Tyson Fury has urged his son to retire. His call comes after ‘The Gypsy King’ captured the WBC and Ring Magazine heavyweight world titles by beating American powerhouse Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas this weekend – 14 months on from their controversial draw. During which Fury dominated the fight but suffered two late knockdowns which swayed the judges to giving Wilder a portion of the decision. There was no doubt this time as Fury battered his man from the opening bell, ultimately securing the seventh round stoppage win.
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain Fury’s dad said his son has achieved all he can in boxing and should now call it a day, to spend time with his wife and five children, he said.
“I want my son to retire now. He’s done enough. It’s been an
uphill battle for him. He’s done enough. I want him to pack it in now.
“I think it’s in the back of his mind. He can’t do anymore. He’s
won every professional title. Enough is enough. There’s more to life now. He’s
given it his all. He’s got no more to prove. He’s proved he’s
been a worthy champion from this country. He’s been 13 years as a pro and he’s
always been the opponent.
“Whatever he’s gone into, it’s been an uphill battle
for him. He’s 32 years old. He’s got a young family and I do believe his
children deserve their father. He’s done enough and that’s my opinion.”
Fight fans around
the world will be hoping 31-year-old Tyson doesn’t listen to his father on this
occasion. An all-British heavyweight mega-fight with WBO, IBF and WBA champion
Anthony Joshua is still to be made.
Until Fury has claimed the win over his long-term domestic rival many people will argue that his career is not complete. Let’s hope the man himself feels the same. (Transcribed by Daily Mirror)

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wants an Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury fight to happen later this year.
Fury became the WBC heavyweight champion following his seventh-round TKO win over Deontay Wilder last night. In the process, he established himself as arguably the best heavyweight in the sport today.
Wilder does have a rematch clause which he must reportedly trigger within 30 days. However, given the nature of the fight, many in the combat sport world would prefer to see Fury face domestic rival and current WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion Joshua.
And despite the accusations heading his way about wanting to protect his star fighter, Hearn wants to make the fight happen and says Joshua wants it as well:
“Of course I am!” Hearn replied to a fan who said he wouldn’t let Joshua near Fury following the latter’s win. “And AJ wants it bad..this fight is gonna and has to happen this year!”
Hearn added there was no need for a Fury vs. Wilder trilogy and called for a title unification fight with Joshua to happen in the summer:
“No need for a third let’s go straight to it in the Summer! #undisputed”
Of course, things like this have been said in the past before as well. We’ll just have to wait and see if the stars align for the heavyweight title unification fight everyone has been dying to see.
