Former UFC strawweight champion, ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas has opened up on her traumatic experience during the infamous bus attack, perpetrated by former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor during fight week ahead of UFC 223 in April of 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
McGregor, who was then entangled in the ultimate beginnings of his now scalding rivalry with undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov — along with a group of associates travelled to the parking lot of the Barclays Center, in a bid to draw out the latter after an earlier incident involving McGregor’s SBG teammate, Artem Lobov and Khabib.
Briefly held back by security, McGregor eventually got his hands on a moving dolly, which he threw through the window of the reversing bus — shattering its glass. Sat amongst the red-corner fighters, Khabib was beckoned out of the bus by McGregor who began slamming his fist on the buses window, as UFC welterweight contender, Michael Chiesa dealt with a cut on his forehead.
Also seated on the vehicle; defending strawweight champion, Namajunas who was scheduled to attempt the first defence of her 115-pound title against two-time opponent, dominant former champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
“It was like an eternity in that bus, because I had no idea who that was that was attacking us,” Namajunas said. “All of a sudden I see a big ol’ fist kind of bang on my window and then I see one of the security guards grab one of the dudes. I didn’t know it was Conor (McGregor) until a little bit later. When he threw the dolly, the bus was backing up into the elevator spot as he threw it to the window right in front of me. But had the bus not been moving, it would have hit my window.“
According to the former champion, the entire incident brought back unsettling memories of bus journeys of her youth where objects would be hurled at the vehicle as it travelled through neighbourhoods.
“In my head, once I found out it was Conor, I was a little relieved, but I still was on edge,” Namajunas said. “It just took me back to when I was a kid, riding to school through bad neighbourhoods on a bus and people throwing sh*t at our bus. And I’ve never been completely cornered like that. We were just sitting there not in control. So, what did I do in that moment? I said the Lord’s prayer again and then it did make me feel a little bit better at that moment, and it got me through that tough moment.“
“And everything that was from my childhood, this is what I fought to get out of, and this is like back to stupid street sh*t,” Namajunas explained. “I don’t want to be around that any more. That’s what I fought my way out of.“

Dana White has an intense interview with Waleed Aly of the Channel 10 show to promote UFC Fight Night 142 in Adelaide and UFC 234 next February. This is when Aly brought up the UFC 223 bus attack.
Back in April during fight week of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event, McGregor and several members of his entourage decided to fly from Ireland to Brooklyn, New York to get revenge on current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
It all started once the UFC lightweight champion got into an argument with McGregor’s training partner, Artem Lobov, earlier that week. This led to McGregor attacking the fighter bus that had Nurmagomedov on and he was arrested as a result, then was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief.
Aly brought up how there haven’t been any real punishments involving these fighters for their actions. This includes the bus attack and their UFC 229 post-fight brawl.
“We have a hearing that’s coming up in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) that’s coming up in December. They will lay down fines and suspensions and whatever they’re going to do. They’re actually coming after me for the promotion of the fight. So it was a bad night and believe me everybody asks me this question, White said (H/T to News.com).
Dana White Fires Back
White continued by stating that this incident isn’t good for business as they don’t need outside drama in order to sell fights.
You know, ‘This happened and it was bad, but it’s good for your business’, it’s really not good for business when things like that happen. We don’t need that type of stuff to sell a fight.”
This led to White defending himself by stating that McGregor was definitely punished for his actions.
“We do a show called UFC Embedded where we follow the fighters around. So those cameras were there when that happened because of that. But do you understand, he (McGregor) got arrested. He went to jail! He had to go before the New York Attorney-General. So they already took care of it, what am I going to do? What’s a suspension going to do? He was suspended, he couldn’t fight because he was in jail!”
Dana Doesn’t Back Down
Aly doubled down with his take and made it known that he wasn’t criticizing White but trying to get an answer from him.
“I’m levelling, that’s what I do. I put on fights. This guy was arrested, he was down there because we were supposed to be talking about a fight he was going to be in. He came and attacked a bus and got arrested and went to jail.”
White brought up how the UFC is overseen by the NSAC. Following their UFC 229 post-fight brawl, they’re both suspended for their actions.
“Now we’re overseen by the NSAC, so these guys can’t fight. They’re both on suspension, they’re going to get fined a certain amount of money. Whatever that number is that they suggest and then there’s going to be a suspension held out. That’s what Nevada does, they govern us. So what else am I going to do? Suspend them for another year? It doesn’t make sense.”
Finally, the UFC President made it known that reality is always better than a script that is written for MMA. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong.
“Let me tell you what, reality is better than any script you could ever write. If you think that we would put our top guy in a position where he attacks a bus. Hurts other fighters then gets sued by all of them and then gets arrested. We’re not that good.”
The fiasco that was Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov is done – for now. However, the aftermath of McGregor’s UFC 223 media day bus attack lives on.
One of the fighters injured during the ordeal was UFC welterweight Michael Chiesa. Chiesa was cut by shards of glass from McGregor tossing a dolly through a fighter bus window. He was removed from his scheduled fight with Anthony Pettis as a result.
Chiesa is now suing McGregor over the incident, much to the dislike of the Irishman’s fans. Speaking to “The MMA Hour” recently, “Maverick” revealed that some McGregor fans have actually been sending some hurtful messages to his mother and girlfriend (via MMA Fighting):
“I’m gonna tread lightly with this, obviously I can’t say a whole lot. But it just has not been good. Even my girlfriend and my mom get messages and comments. They’re not a part of this and it’s kind of a shame when — my mom’s a sensitive lady and I do my best to protect her and stuff.
“And when she tells me about some of the mean things that are getting sent her way it’s really, it’s a shame. Anybody can say whatever they want to me. This is about me, this isn’t about my family. And, you know, today hasn’t been great.”
Chiesa wasn’t the only fighter affected by the attack.
Flyweight Ray Borg had some glass residue enter his eyes, affecting his vision and canceling his fight as well. McGregor was targeting UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Of course, McGregor and Khabib fought earlier this month (Sat. October 6, 2018) at UFC 229. “The Notorious” was defeated via fourth-round submission.
His lawsuit with Chiesa is ongoing. From the sound of how things are proceeding, ‘Maverick’ most likely wants it over sooner than later.
