Let the shenanigans begin.

Derrick Lewis will get his first shot at the UFC heavyweight title next month (Sat. November 3, 2018). “The Black Beast” challenges heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of the UFC 230 pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden.

Lewis is nothing short of highly entertaining, and he proved that with his recent “promo” for the fight that he posted on his Instagram. Lewis shared a hilarious video montage to hype his fight with Cormier, featuring some footage of them exchanging words at a press conference this past summer.

Unexpected Title Bout

News of Cormier vs. Lewis really threw the mixed martial arts (MMA) community for a loop. There was a ton of controversy surrounding the UFC 230 main event. Initially, a main event wasn’t announced for the card, with only a high-profile co-main event named.

Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier were penciled in for a lightweight match-up. However, it was recently announced Poirier suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from the contest. Diaz pulled from the event soon after that. The UFC also had announced that a women’s flyweight title fight would main event the Madison Square Garden card.

Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks were initially given the nod for the coveted main event slot. However, the UFC was able to put together a last-second jaw-dropper for fight fans. It was announced UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier would take on knockout artist Derrick Lewis in the night’s main event.

Lewis is coming off a hard-fought victory from this past weekend (Sat. October 6, 2018) at UFC 229. After getting dominated for three rounds, and almost certain to lose on the judges’ scorecards, Lewis pulled off a miraculous Hail Mary victory. With seconds left in the fight, Lewis uncorked a devastating overhand on Alexander Volkov.

The Russian was dropped to the mat and Lewis poured on the ground-and-pound for the stoppage win. The victory was enough to earn him a post-fight bonus, and a UFC heavyweight title opportunity because of it. Albeit, an opportunity much sooner than he expected due to the short-notice nature of the fight.

But a title shot nonetheless, and now Lewis is promoting the fight like only he can as a result.

Following his removal from UFC 230’s co-main event, Dustin Poirier has updated his health status via social media.

“The Diamond” was supposed to face Nate Diaz in a much anticipated lightweight co-main event at UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden on November 3. Unfortunately, injuries are apart of the game.

In the wake of Poirier’s injury announcement and subsequent removal, many fans wondered if Diaz would be rebooked against a different opponent. That, however, would not happen and Stockton’s own Diaz would be removed from UFC 230 entirely.

As for Poirier, he has broken his silence regarding his latest injury. And the No. 3-ranked lightweight isn’t too concerned.

“Small setbacks happen.. I’m flying out to LA next week to get a second opinion on my injury and I’ll have an idea of when I can return to compete, I can’t wait to get back in the Octagon!!

“Thank you all for the support”

It appears Poirier is in good spirits despite his small setback. Be that as it may, it’s still unclear when he will be able to return to training, let alone the Octagon.

Hopefully “The Diamond” has a speedy recovery. And hopefully, a Diaz rebooking isn’t too far out of the question upon his return.

Daniel Cormier Details Why He Took UFC 230 Title Fight

Cormier reveals how much longer fight fans can expect to see him in the Octagon.

Daniel Cormier didn’t expect he’d be fighting on UFC 230 next month (Sat. November 3, 2018).

Cormier is scheduled to take on Derrick Lewis in the main event of the Madison Square Garden card. He’ll be defending his heavyweight throne against “The Black Beast,” who has established himself as one of the UFC’s most entertaining fighters. It’s certainly a risk for Cormier, who has a superfight with Brock Lesnar waiting on the horizon.

However, as he tells ESPN, the UFC offered the “Champ Champ” a deal he couldn’t possibly refuse:

“I didn’t think I was going to fight on this card, but the deal I got was so good,” Cormier said.

“There was no way I could say no, honestly. Especially with a guy like Derrick, who is not known for the best cardio. I’ve got to start fast and hope I can push harder than him, even with a short camp.”

Cormier has had a storied journey throughout his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. With no shortage of accolades – a former King Of The Cage, Strikeforce, and of course UFC heavyweight (and light heavyweight) champion – “DC” is certainly one of the all-time greats. He’ll now get the opportunity to headline a UFC pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden.

Recently, Cormier has made it very clear that his time inside the cage is coming to a close. He has stated before he has probably two fights left in him. Those being Brock Lesnar and a possible rematch with Jon Jones. With the addition of Derrick Lewis to the mix, Cormier seems to be sticking to his number:

“Counting the Lewis fight, I think I’m down to two fights left,” Cormier said. “Maybe this will be a blessing in disguise, the fact that I don’t have a crazy, long fight camp to beat myself down.

“That may prolong it for me, but right now, I think I have this one and maybe one more. I can still fight in March and hit my retirement date. The one opponent that would matter to me most is Jones, because he’s beaten me twice.”

“(The second win was later overturned to a no contest due to a Jones positive drug test.) The one that would mean more financially would be Lesnar. I think I would always pick the one that means more, but my wife might have something to say about that.”
