If the UFC decides to let Cris Cyborg walk, the former women’s 145-pound champ thinks the promotion is making a mistake.

Cyborg’s contract with the UFC is set to expire in the next few months. When that happens, the Brazilian knockout artist has teased going elsewhere, perhaps even embarking on a career in boxing. However, as she tells Brazilian news outlet PVT, if the UFC lets her walk without a fight, she thinks the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotional juggernaut would be “losing” (via MMA Fighting):

”I don’t know what they will do moving forward,” Cyborg said. “I will keep fighting no matter where I am. My fans love watching my fights. If they decide to remove my division, and remove me from the UFC and let me go, I think the UFC would be losing with that, and the promotion that signs me would be winning. My fans follow me wherever I go.

“I’m very thankful because my fans are with me no matter if I win or lose. I want to continue working. The UFC is a great platform to continue (building) my division. I think that even Amanda felt good at 145, other fighters have as well, because they don’t hurt (their bodies) that much, but that’s out of my control.

“My manager will meet them and see what’s the next step, but if they decide to remove the division, I will definitely continue shining somewhere else, like I’ve always done. Let’s see what happens.”

Future Uncertain

Last month, Cyborg suffered her first loss in over a decade. She was knocked out in under a minute by Amanda Nunes. “The Lioness” went into the fight as the UFC’s 135-pound champion. Now, she holds both the UFC’s bantamweight and featherweight titles, as the first female “champ-champ” in UFC history. After the fight, Cyborg expressed interest in an immediate rematch with Nunes.

However, Nunes herself said she’d make Cyborg wait quite a while before giving her a rematch. That’s left Cyborg’s future in the UFC and MMA up in the air. Also, UFC President Dana White said he’s not interested in making the rematch so soon, as the initial fight was very decisive.

Amanda Nunes may have fought her last fight at 145 pounds after just winning the title.

Weeks after winning the strap, “The Lioness” took to Twitter today (Mon. January 14, 2019) and said “145 never again.”

In the video, she is struggling to put on a pair of her jeans.

This is likely due to the weight she put on in preparation for her jump up to featherweight:

It’s unclear how serious Nunes is about not fighting at featherweight again.

“The Lioness” made quick work of Cris Cyborg in the first round of their fight at UFC 232 last month. With the win, she is now the first-ever female “champ champ” in UFC history. The Brazilian already had the 135-pound championship heading into the fight. Nunes is now the first woman to defeat Cyborg in over a decade.

There aren’t many challengers left for Nunes at bantamweight. Perhaps a title defense at featherweight against someone like Megan Anderson, or a rematch with Cyborg would make more sense. Nunes was reluctant to give any details about her future at featherweight following her victory.

Perhaps she truly has fought her last bout at featherweight.

Report: UFC 232 Draws Impressive PPV Numbers

UFC 232 draws an impressive PPV (pay-per-view) buyrate according to longtime pro wrestling and MMA journalist Dave Meltzer.

It was reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the event pulled in 700,000 buys. Thus, it makes it the second highest selling PPV of 2018 for the Las Vegas-based promotion. That should make UFC President Dana White very happy.

It’s only behind the UFC 229 show that did 2.4 million buys, making it the best selling UFC PPV in history. Obviously, that was due to having the Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight serve as the main event.

It was a stacked card that had some drama, which appears to only help not hurt the success of this show that wrapped up the year for the UFC. The promotion decided in order to keep Jon Jones on the card to move the event from Las Vegas to os Angeles on a week’s notice.

Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson in a bout for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title headlined this show, which saw Jones reclaim the strap. Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s featherweight title co-headlined, which saw Nunes destroy the former champ in order to make UFC history.

Aaron Bronsteter mentioned how the average 2018 PPV buyrate was 447,307 while last year saw 339,583 and in 2016, it pulled in 655,230. It should be noted that McGregor fought on PPV three times while former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey fought once.

Recent Shows

For those who like comparisons, UFC 231: Holloway vs. Ortega did between 40,000 to 300,000 buys in early December. In November, UFC 230: Cormier vs. Lewis drew 250,000 buys and October,  UFC 228: Woodley vs. Till had a buyrate of just 130,000.

Finally, it should be noted that all these numbers are estimates as the UFC does not publicly disclose numbers.
