Jon Jones is taking Alexander Gustafsson much more seriously in their rematch at UFC 232.

In their first fight at UFC 165, Jones picked up the win via close decision. He has since admitted to partying way too hard leading up to the fight. Regardless, Jones notched the win and defended the light heavyweight title yet again.

Leading up to their first fight Jones kept hearing how Gustafsson was a ‘Swedish version’ of himself. And although “Bones” beat Gus the first time he won’t treat the Swede like a knockoff version of himself.

“I was getting used to people saying things like, ‘He is a lot like Jon Jones with better hands and better footwork.’ Everybody was saying he was a Swedish version of me,” said Jones during a recent stop on UFC Unfiltered podcast.

“In my head, I was thinking he’s tall, has a presence about him, but he is not me. There is only one me, and it was almost an arrogance that I had. I was feeling like I was a product and he was a knockoff version of me.”

Lesson Learned

In every fight, win or lose, there’s a lesson to be learned. On that night Jones learned a valuable one:

“What he showed me was, hard work can beat talent when talent isn’t working hard. And that is such a true thing. I know I wasn’t doing the right things. I was in the heyday of my partying. Now I know what he is capable of and I will treat him as such. I will train for him like it is supposed to be,” he concluded.

While its true Jones has been away from the sport for some 16 months, Gustafsson has been sidelined for 18. That’s a baffling statistic in its own right.

We’ll see which fighter will be on top of his game on December 29.

Jon Jones defends his credibility in a recent interview where he was pressed about his two drug test violations under the USADA umbrella. Jones will have the chance to prove people wrong once he fights Alexander Gustafsson for a second time with the vacant light heavyweight title being on the line. This will serve as the headliner of the UFC 232 pay-per-view event.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion appeared on Monday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take” to promote his upcoming fight. This is when he brought up how USADA exonerated him from a second steroid positive that resulted in a 15-month suspension.

Latest Drug Test

Jones failed an in-competition drug test for Turinabol at UFC 214 after he beat Daniel Cormier by third-round TKO. This fight took place in the main event in July of 2017 in Anaheim, California. Back in February, it was revealed that the CSAC revoked Jones’ MMA license and fined him $205,000.

“I think what you do is you look at the science,” said Jones (H/T to MMaJunkie). “Instead of judging and saying, ‘Oh well, this guy’s lying,’ because he’s always been a winner. You look at the science. And USADA is a credible drug-testing agency; they always have been. They’ve tested Lance Armstrong and lots of great athletes. The highest level athletes throughout history. They don’t make mistakes. So the fact that I’m here back fighting is because they don’t mistakes. I was able to be proven innocent.”

The UFC 232 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Jones’ Response To Haters

Jones continued by telling those who have criticized him in the past all comes down to them being jealous. Those critics include several ex-champions in the UFC light heavyweight division Rashad Evans and Chuck Liddell

“I’ve been able to do great things in this sport and unfortunately, I had a hiccup with this steroid situation. I’m grateful that USADA came on and proved my innocence by saying, hey, this was a little bit of a misunderstanding. And it goes to show how dominant I’ve been in the sport.”

Michael Johnson Wants Zabit Fight At UFC 232

UFC featherweight and lightweight competitor Michael Johnson is interested in fighting Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 232.

Michael Johnson is looking for a big fight at featherweight.

The former longtime lightweight recently dropped down to 145 pounds. He suffered a submission loss to Darren Elkins this past January in his divisional debut. However, he has since won back-to-back fights at 145 pounds. His latest win was against Artem Lobov at UFC Moncton.

Johnson took the fight on short notice, and unfortunately missed weight as a result. As thanks for taking the fight on late notice, Lobov paid Johnson back the fine he was penalized for missing weight. “The Menace” recently joined MMA Junkie Radio to talk about his next possible move.

The possibility of a fight with rising featherweight prospect Zabit Magomedsharipov arose. Johnson said, while he’s not calling Zabit out, he’d be open to fighting the Russian on December 29th at UFC 232:

“If he wants to fight in December I’m all for that,” Johnson said. “He’s a very tough guy, he’s up and coming and it’d be a great fight as well. He’s ranked.

“None of those guys did call him out and I don’t think anybody really has called him out. I’m not necessarily going on air calling him out, but I’m saying that’s a fight I would take of course.”

Zabit has been extremely impressive since coming to the UFC. He hasn’t suffered a loss in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition since 2013. Upon signing with the UFC in 2017, Zabit has won all four of his Octagon appearances.

He has been able to finish all but one of his fights under the promotion’s banner. Each of Zabit’s finishes have come by way of submission. A match-up with a fighter the caliber of Johnson would certainly be a big test for the 27-year-old.

Next month (Sat. December 29, 2018) the UFC will host a rematch of one of the best fights in the promotion’s history.

Back in 2013, Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson put on a classic of a light heavyweight title contest. Both men endured the most damage of their fighting careers, however, “Bones” emerged victorious with the unanimous decision win. Ever since, Gustafsson has been gunning for a rematch with Jones.

He’ll now get it. Jones vs. Gustafsson II will main event UFC 232 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner will be crowned the new UFC light heavyweight champion. Current titleholder Daniel Cormier will be stripped after the fight starts.

“The Mauler” came closer than anyone to defeating Jones, who has yet to be bested inside the Octagon. Speaking on “The MMA Hour” recently, Gustafsson said he believes Jones is still “the best fighter in the world” (via BJPenn.com):

“He’s a really talented fighter. He’s a very smart fighter,” Gustafsson said. “Whatever Jon does, in that Octagon he has a strategy and he’s a very smart fighter with a good eye, so you can’t relax.

“You can’t relax with this guy, you can’t even give him an inch. You have be on your toes the whole fight, you have to be ready the whole fight.

“So, that’s how I see Jon now. Jon has just been so impressive, that’s why he never lost. So, he is just that guy. He’s been beating everybody, so we all know how he is and how he’s been.

“He’s the best fighter in the world. For me, he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter, so like I said, I can’t relax for a second when I fight him.”
