In the main event of UFC 236 on pay-per-view (PPV) last night (Sat. April 13, 2019), UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway met Dustin Poirier for the interim 155-pound championship.

Poirier came out aggressive right out the gate, rocking the 145-pound champ early. He was able to control the fight up until the third round, where “Blessed” bounced back as “The Diamond” began to fade. However, Poirier caught a second wind, and was able to use his power and boxing to out-damage the Hawaiian striker.

Both men put on an amazing showing, but when it was all said and done, Poirier was awarded the unanimous decision to become the new interim 155-pound champion of the world. He will now face Khabib Nurmagomedov in a unification bout once “The Eagle’s” suspension is up.

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sat. April 13, 2019) UFC 236 pay-per-view (PPV), Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum met inside the Octagon for the interim UFC middleweight title.

Both men put on one of the best 185-pound title fights in UFC history. Gastelum and Adesanya left it all out in the Octagon, with each having big moments. However, it was “Stylebender” who was able to do the most damage, nearly finishing the fight in the closing seconds of the fifth and final round.

Max “Blessed” Holloway will meet Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier in the second of two interim title fights at UFC 236.

Although he already holds the featherweight title, Holloway (20-3) will look to capture the interim lightweight title and avenge a loss all in the same night against Poirier. Holloway will look to improve upon his ridiculous 13 fight winning streak; a win over “The Diamond” would make it 14 in a row.

As for Poirier (24-5), “The Diamond’s” resume reads like a whos who of the best MMA has had in the last decade. This title fight is long overdue for Poirier who has won eight of his last nine in the Octagon.

Round One

Poirier pumps the jab to start. He lands a hard leg kick. Holloway lands a leg kick of his own. Poirier lands a left hand, then follows and eats a right from Holloway. Poirier goes in for the kill, he unloads a barrage of punches. Holloway answers with a right hand. Holloway is hurt. Poirier lands a knee, then wings a right hand. Again, Poirier lands a left hand. Holloway lands. Poirier lands a combo that ends with an uppercut. Holloway lands a left hand over the top. Poirier lands a one-two. Holloway throws a head kick as the round ends.

Round Two

Poirier throws a head kick to start the second round. Holloway lunges in with a right, then gets out of harm’s way. He digs to the body, then goes to the head of Poirier. Poirier wings a left. Holloway switching stances back and forth. He goes to the body again with a right hand. Poirier lands a straight left hand. Both guys land in the pocket. Poirier looks for a takedown but the Hawaiian stuffed it. He peppers Poirier with some rights and lefts. Poirier lands a left hand, he moves in and Holloway circles out. He lands a right hook on Poirier. Poirier lands a right hook that hurts Holloway bad. The round ends.

Round Three

Holloway lands a couple of quick left hands to start the round. Holloway moves in and eats a left hook. Poirier digs to the body. Holloway blitz’ forward with a one-two. Poirier uncorks a right hand. Holloway lands a straight right hand, then gets his jab going. Halfway through the round. Holloway picking it up here, he lands a jab. Poirier lands a right. Holloway wings a left hand then an uppercut. Holloway starting to put the pace on. He throws a flying knee, Poirier catches him and works for the takedown. Holloway defends with hard elbows to Poirier’s head. The round ends.

Round Four

Holloway lands a straight right to start the round. Poirier shoots a takedown and gets deep. He works to complete it as Holloway defends. The fighters grapple and Holloway lands a knee to Poirier’s body as they break. Poirier pops the jab, Holloway is putting it on. He closes in with a right hand, then a left. Poirier answers with a right that hurts Holloway. Both fighters unload against the cage. Holloway digs to the body of Poirier. Poirier wings a right. Poirier lands a knee that busts the Hawaiian open. Holloway is having a hard time seeing because of the blood. Poirier looks for a takedown, Holloway thinks about a choke but there is too much blood. The round ends.

Round Five

The fighters throw their jabs to start. Holloway throws a body kick. Poirier goes over the top with a left hand. He cracks Holloway with a counter left. Holloway lands a right as he moves forward. They trade right hands. Holloway lands a body kick. He moves forward and clips Poirier. Poirier catches Holloway on the reset. Holloway works a combo, Poirier answers with a jab. Under two minutes left in the fight. The fighters clinch, Poirier works for another takedown. Holloway defends as both men are taking a bit of a breather. 45 seconds left Poirier still looking for the takedown. The horn sounds.

The first of two interim title fights will go down at UFC 236 when Kelvin Gastelum meets Israel Adesanya in the Octagon.

Gastelum (16-3) has been in this position before. He was scheduled to face middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker for the title at UFC 234 but an unfortunate injury took hold of the champion and the rest is history.

As for Adesanya (16-0). He will make his sixth walk to the Octagon on Saturday night; he only needed 14 months to do so. In Gastelum, “Stylebender” will face his toughest wrestler to date. Let’s see how this plays out.

Round One

Gastelum pressures then backs off. Adesanya throws a push kick as a range finder. Gastelum faints and looks for an opening. Adesanya lands a hard body kick. Gastelum clips him with a left hook. Both fighters look very relaxed. Gastelum clips Adesanya with a left hook, he stumbles and gets back to his feet. Gastelum lands a right hand., then a left. Adesanya looks like he has regained composure. 90 seconds left in the round. Gastelum wades in with a left hand. Adesanya throws a one-two, Gastelum answers. The round ends.

Round Two

Gastelum takes the center of the Octagon quick to start round two. Adesanya lands a body kick, then he circles out. He throws some slow-motion punches then a wheel kick in real time. Gastelum catches him with a jab. Adesanya goes to the head with a kick but Gastelum eats it. Gastelum lands a jab. Gastelum pressures and lands a right hand. Adesanya drops Gastelum with a right hand. He dives on Gastelum but he recovers. Both men get to their feet. Adesanya lands a head kick, then a right hand to follow. Gastelum is in trouble. Adesanya lands a spinning elbow, Gastelum is hurt. He dives for a leg. Adesanya lands a left hand. Gastelum looks for a takedown. The round ends with the fighters on their feet.

Round Three

Gastelum takes the center to start. Adesanya lands a thudding leg kick. Gastelum is bouncing on the outside trying to bypass a nine-inch reach. Adesanya throws a push kick. Adesanya goes head-body-head, Gastelum pressures and lands a kick. Gastelum lands a leg kick. Adesanya lands a straight right hand. Both fighters stand and trade. Adesanya throws a hard inside leg kick. Gastelum wings a left hand. “Stylebender” cracks him with a right, then a left. Gastelum hurts Adesanya with a right hand. He pressures as Adesanya backs up. Gastelum is moving in as the horn sounds.

Round Five

Gastelum waists no time and rushes across the cage. He lands a combo. Adesanya lands a kick of his own. Then lands a front kick. Adesanya lands a straight right hand. Gastelum looks for a takedown, Adesanya looks for the choke. Gastelum escapes. Adesanya chains submissions. The fight gets back to the feet, crazy. Adesanya snaps Gastelum’s neck back with a straight right hand. He crack him with another right hand. The fight slows a bit. Adesanya lands a one-two. Adesanya drops Gastelum with a right. A light heavyweight match up that is sure to entertain will unfold next at UFC 2236 as Eryk Anders and Khalil Rountree meet in the center of the Octagon.

Anders (11-3) is a fighter’s fighter. “Ya Boy” will take a fight in either the middleweight division or the light heavyweight division like he is doing on Saturday night. Eight of Ander’s wins have come via stoppage.

As for Rountree (7-3), “The War Horse” has had an up-and-down UFC career. The TUF season three vet has won four of his last five fights. His only blemish in that stretch was to rising Brazilian fighter Johnny Walker.

Round One

Anders moves forward. Rountree has a noticeable Thai stance. He throws a light leg kick. Anders looks a bit confused here early on. Rountree blasts a hard leg kick, then another. He cracks Anders with a right, then a body kick. Rountree is smashing Anders lead leg with kicks. Anders has yet to land a strike, less than two minutes to go in round one. Again, Rountree slams a leg kick home, then again. Anders is in a bad way. He throws a spinning elbow, but Rountree smashes two more leg kicks into his leg. The round ends.

Round Two

Rountree moves forward with a blitz. He drops Anders with a straight left hand. He throws a hammer fist and dives in. He lets him back up. Anders can hardly stand. Roundtree lands a left hook and a kick. Anders falls. Rountree toys with him, then he lets him up. Rountree lands a right hand then a knee to the body. Anders tries to answer but Rountree drops him with a left hand. Anders gets up as Rountree lets him up. Anders eats a body kick. Rountree floors Anders with a right hook. He stands over Anders and lets him up. Rountree moves in with a one-two. The horn sounds.

Round Three

The fighters touch gloves. Rountree moves up and down looking for an opening. He lands a hard leg kick. Anders fires a straight left hand. Rountree lunges in with a right hand, then a left. Anders fires a left hand. Rountree goes back to the leg kicks. He blasts a couple hard kicks for good measure. Anders wings a left hand. Less than two minutes to go in the fight. Rountree throws a push kick, Anders throws a lazy high kick. Rountree throws a high-low-high combo.

Alan “Brahma” Jouban and Dwight “The Body Snatcher” Grant will square off next at UFC 236 in an exciting 170-pound match up.

Jouban (16-6) will return to action after more than a year away from the Octagon. He last competed at UFC on FOX 28 in February of 2018 where he defeated Ben Saunders via second-round TKO.

As for Grant (9-2). The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout has long been a killer in the training room. The 34-year-old Grant will look to get his hand raised in the Octagon for the first time on Saturday night.

Jouban pressures as Grant uses his footwork to cut an angle. Jouban throws a straight left hand and looks for a takedown. Jouban narrowly misses a head kick on the break. Jouban throws a front flip kick. Grant answers with a leg kick of his own. Jouban is having a hard time locating Grant here in round two. He moves forward and throws a high kick.
