Many expected Nate Diaz to call out Conor McGregor after his big win over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 last week.

However, he instead opted to call out fellow fan-favorite Jorge Masvidal, who happened to be in attendance for the show. The mixed martial arts (MMA) community has certainly gotten behind the matchup, and negotiations are allegedly ongoing. As for McGregor, he was watching the PPV event, and drew inspiration from Diaz’s performance.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani of ESPN, when asked if he felt “boxed out” when Diaz opted not to call him out for their trilogy bout after the win, McGregor denied such a claim.

“No, Nate and I – we spent almost 50 minutes in the Octagon together,” McGregor said. “The damage is done. They were intense bouts. Very intense bouts. But Nate is a crafty individual. He opened up the deck. Nate is a crafty, crafty individual. And Jorge, Jorge is on a two-fight win streak at the minute, the game is very forgetful, he had a – didn’t really have a great run in the lightweight division.

“And he’s on a two-fight streak, and he was in present in the arena. Nate is a crafty individual. But no, I did not feel I was boxed out. I’ve done – I’ve boxed Nate out in reality. So, we’ll see what happens. If he does not want the trilogy bout then no problem, no problem. I don’t blame him. Damn, look at the fights, look at the damage. They were intense bouts. It does not matter not, it’s time for me to just get back in.

“I was over that also, I was ready to go against anyone. I was preparing for the end of July. And this happened [broken hand]. That’s it. I must deal with it, accept it, and learn from it. And that’s what I will do.”

McGregor has bee battling some issues outside of the Octagon as of late. Once those are squared away, the Irishman seems to be interested in returning before the end of the year. While he still desires an immediate rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor is ready and willing to fight anyone the UFC puts in front of him.

What do you think about McGregor not seeming bothered by Diaz calling out Masvidal instead of him?

Nate Diaz impressed a lot of people last week when he made his highly-anticipated Octagon return at UFC 241.

Diaz outclassed Anthony “Showtime” Pettis in the co-main event. After, he called out Jorge Masvidal to meet him inside the cage next. Many believed Diaz would call out Conor McGregor for their trilogy bout. The Irishman was, indeed, watching the pay-per-view (PPV), and drew a ton of inspiration from Diaz’s performance.

Speaking to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Sports Center, McGregor explained why he was so motivated by Diaz’s performance.

“I’ve studied every single scenario that’s happened to me. I’ve studied every single scenario that has happened in the game. I am eager to come back here. So we will see what will happen in the future but I’m going in confident with a lot of knowledge gained about myself, about my skillset, about my mindset. And I look forward to implementing them and getting back on track. Look at Nate Diaz, last fight three years ago, defeated by me and came back and won. And it was a motivating experience for me. Look at Stipe Miocic came back against a knockout loss.

“Won his title back against a man that knocked him out. There’s so many stories of this and mine is going to be the greatest one of all. And that’s what I’m aiming for. Even Urijah Faber, a former foe/friend of mine. He came back 40 years of age. The game is far from over for me and I’m very excited. I had a little road bump, I was preparing for July in Madison Square Garden. I was in phenomenal condition mentally and physically, the best I’ve ever been. I learned so much from the damage I took in that last camp what not to do.

“And how to approach this next time. And I gained, I was in phenomenal condition. Then I little slip up again. I’m just trying to find that balance, and get motivated again. And I’m looking for inspiration from everywhere. Like I said, I took great motivation from watching Nate go out and do his thing. Even looking at Nate, there’s many things that were amazing about that whole performance for me from Nate, but one of the most important ones that stood out for me – the very first thing he said post-fight was “The Nick Diaz Army.”

“He gave a shout out to his brother. And I hope his brother is doing well, I hope Nick is doing well, a soldier of the game, of the real fight game. And he gave him respect straight off the bat. That’s why the fan’s love Nate, that’s why I love and respect Nate. Even now with the cannabis strain that he’s coming out with. I hope he has his business mind screwed on, because he’s in a position now where he can make a generation like I have. And I hope to see that and these are the things I’m looking at, taking motivation from, to use in my game to push me forward.”

McGregor has not yet been announced for a return to action. He did note that he believes he’ll fight before the year is up. As for who his opponent will be, that remains to be seen.

UFC 241 was a momentous occasion for Stipe Miocic and for more than one reason.

Miocic regained his heavyweight title from Daniel Cormier after knocking him out in the fourth round of their UFC 241 headliner this past weekend.

The Cleveland native was dominated for much of the fight and clearly behind in the scorecards. However, he rallied and with an adjustment that saw him go for Cormier’s body more, eventually came away with the TKO victory.

Miocic is now a two-time heavyweight champion while he also reestablished himself as the greatest in his division. The news would only get better from there on out. Speaking after the win, Miocic learned that his dad was cleared of his cancer. He would dedicate his win to him before joking about the casual way his dad announced the news.

You can watch Miocic interact with his dad as well as the entire sneak peek of UFC 241’s Thrill and the Agony below. The video also features Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis and some reactions from Miocic’s coaches:

Stipe Miocic is once again the heavyweight champion. He reclaimed the belt by beating Daniel Cormier by TKO in the fourth round at UFC 241.

Yet, it didn’t appear he was going to win the fight early on. Cormier used his wrestling and striking effectively and was up 30-27 on many people’s scorecards heading into the fourth round. For Miocic, he was not happy with his performance early on.

“It was terrible (the beginning of the fight), my God. It seemed that I could not fight,” Miocic said to Combate (as transcribed by BJPENN.com). “I thought, ‘should I be here? Then I started to open more, found the distance and began to see openings. Okay, we’re fine, I get it now”

Then in the fourth, he started to attack the body which set up the TKO win. Why he decided to switch the gameplan like that was simple. He was watching past fights from Cormier’s where he saw Anderson Silva have a ton of success hitting ‘DC’ in the body. So, after his original game plan didn’t work he remembered that fight which helped him win.

“In the third round (I decided to change my strategy). I started to see it between the third and fourth rounds. My coaches were talking to me and I said ‘let’s attack his body’. He leaves it really open and nobody takes advantage of it,” he explained. “I remember Anderson Silva hit him with a body kick and that hurt him a little bit, so I thought of attacking him there, and it worked.”

Now, with the help of Anderson Silva, Stipe Miocic is once again the heavyweight champion of the world.
