Dominick Reyes hopes the UFC keeps Jon Jones on the roster – if only so he gets another chance to fight him.

Jones’ fighting future remains in question after yet more legal troubles. The former UFC light heavyweight champion was arrested last month on charges of domestic violence and felony tampering with a vehicle. This of course came after his infamous 2015 hit-and-run conviction, and an arrest in March 2020 for driving under the influence and negligent use of a firearm.

Reyes – the last man to face Jones in the octagon – gave his thoughts on the recent arrest in an interview with Fanatics View. The former title challenger said that while he believes Jones deserves to face stiff punishment for his latest infraction, there’s also apart of him that wants to inflict his own form of justice inside the cage (h/t MMA Junkie).

“It’s not a good look for anyone involved, whether it’s the organization, whether it’s Jon, or whether it’s his family,” Reyes said. “No matter what, it’s all bad. This isn’t his first offense, but that’s up to the organization to decide. Me personally, I have a little ‘keep this guy around so I can beat him up again’ kind of thing. Overall, not a lot of words on it, man. It’s just not a good look. Being one of the greatest of all time and doing all that, man, get over it. That chip on your shoulder, whatever it is, just get over it, man. You’re one of the best fighters in the world. I don’t understand why.”

“It’s terrible that it’s a domestic situation and his kids were there and they saw,” Reyes added. “That’s the worst part about the whole thing. The guy needs help. He’s got serious, serious s–t going on.”

Reyes and Jones met in the main event of UFC 247. It was a closely fought, back-and-forth fight – one that many thought Reyes deserved to win. However, the judges disagreed, handing the decision to Jones. Given the controversial outcome and a lack of new challengers for the light heavyweight crown, there was a belief that Reyes could get an immediate rematch. That was not to be, as Jones instead relinquished his title in favor of moving up to the heavyweight division.

With Reyes’ recent struggles and Jones changing divisions, it’s hard to picture a scenario where ‘The Devastator’ gets his wish. However, Reyes remains optimistic and isn’t ruling out the possibility.

“Well, as my body changes and adapts, I’ll gain more weight and become a bigger person overall,” Reyes said. “Maybe I will end up in the heavyweight division by the end of this whole thing. But right now, I’m a light heavyweight. He was talking about going back to light heavyweight. I don’t know, man.”

Do you think we’ll ever see Dominick Reyes fight Jon Jones again?

Journey Newson will have to wait a bit longer before getting his first official UFC win.

The bantamweight initially earned it when he defeated Domingo Pilarte via a 38-second knockout victory on the early prelims of UFC 247 last month in Houston, Texas.

However, that is no longer the case as The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has now overturned the win to a no contest after Newson failed a drug test (per ESPN).

According to Newson’s manager Jason House, the 31-year-old tested positive for marijuana and could face a fine and suspension. The latter will likely be no longer than 90 days as per Texas regulations.

Newson’s record will now stand at 9-2 with one no contest. He was outpointed by Ricardo Ramos in his UFC debut last summer, having previously been on a six-fight winning streak.

What do you make of this news? And do you think it’s time marijuana is legalized as a permitted substance?

Ilir Latifi says he will remain a heavyweight despite losing to Derrick Lewis at UFC 247.

When the fight was booked, many thought it was a total mismatch given Latifi is someone many thought should have gone to middleweight. Lewis, meanwhile, is one of the bigger heavyweights but that didn’t matter in the fight. It was a close scrap where “The Black Beast” won it by decision.

Following the loss, Ilir Latifi makes it clear he will be remaining at heavyweight. He also says he plans on being a giant slayer.

“I’m taking my time to getting used to this division,” Latifi said at a recent Dominance MMA media day (via MMA Junkie). “I had some complications before the fight, and I just pushed on. I needed this fight. It was a big matchup, and I look forward fighting in this division.

“I started my career in heavyweight, and I will probably finish in heavyweight. But I’m a person that loves challenges. I’ve been an underdog all my life, so I could go down to 205 later in the future, too, but right now, I see myself fighting in the heavyweight division. I’m coming for the biggest guys in the division. I’m a giant slayer, so you know it.”

When Ilir Latifi will return to the Octagon is to be seen. But, he wants to return as soon as possible and believes he beat Lewis.

“Right now, just focusing on getting used to the division, and I see myself coming back as soon as possible as I’m ready,” Latifi said. “I don’t see this fight as a loss. I beat a top-five contender in the heavyweight division, a guy that finished a lot of guys in the first round, and to be honest, I think I controlled him pretty easy, three rounds.”

Who do you think Ilir Latifi should fight next at heavyweight?

Ilir Latifi Felt ‘Robbed’ By UFC 247 Judges In Derrick Lewis Fight

Ilir Latifi believes he was “robbed” of a win against Derrick Lewis at UFC 247 last week.

Latifi made his heavyweight debut against Derrick Lewis on the UFC 247 pay-per-view (PPV) last week from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. After three rounds of fighting, Lewis was awarded the decision win in front of his adopted hometown. Speaking to MMA Fighting this week, Latifi noted that he knew it was going to be difficult getting a decision win against Lewis in his hometown.

Add to the fact that Lewis is a huge fan-favorite and one of the UFC’s now most notable stars, it was a tall order for the Swede. Latifi said his true fight that night was against the judges.

“To be honest, I know I was on his home turf,” Latifi. “I’m coming from Sweden. I’m coming to the U.S. I’m coming to Houston. I’m fighting the hometown pride, Derrick Lewis, who is one of the most favorite fighters in the UFC. I like him, too. He’s funny as hell. He’s humble. Nothing to take from that but I knew that I wasn’t fighting just Derrick.

“I was fighting the judges. I was fighting everybody in that arena that night. When I came there, I knew what it was. When the fight was over, you saw Derrick’s face. He knew that he lost that fight.”

Latifi says he controlled the majority of the fight with his grappling. While Lewis landed some nice flying knees, kicks, and punches, Latifi believes he controlled where the fight went for the full 15 minutes they shared the Octagon together.

“If you see it this way, I controlled my opponent for 15 minutes,” Latifi said. “I practically put him in the situation I wanted. I put him against the cage. I was grinding him and making him tired, taking out those power shots. I took him down. He threw some fancy knees and some kicks but I blocked everything and I saw everything.

“I felt very, very comfortable. He didn’t catch me with nothing. It was maybe one punch but I saw everything. I blocked it and I took it with no problem. Not taking credit from Derrick, for being such a heavy guy, doing that stuff is impressive but I think I had total control of the fight. To be honest, I controlled a 270-pound opponent with ease. Most people can’t control their puppy dog for like a minute. That’s the truth. You maybe don’t like it, but that’s what I did.”

Now, Latifi is calling for some accountability on the judges’ part of things. While fighters are penalized financially for breaking rules, missing weight, and more, the UFC veteran feels that the same should be in practice for judges.

“I wasn’t shocked that they robbed me,” Latifi said. “It’s so sad to see that they do that. Because this is the future of the sport. They’re playing around with athletes, fighters’ lives that put everything on the line. We sacrifice so much. We sacrifice our health. We leave our families. We do so much and to leave that in the hands of the judges or a commission that doesn’t understand the sport or favors somebody, that’s wrong. There should be consequences for that, too.

“When fighters do wrong or they break the rules, they get punished for that. But when judges do wrong or rob people from their fights, there’s no consequences for that. It’s bad. It affects the fighters. People can say ‘on to the next one, you did a great fight’ but in a way f*ck that. I did everything for that fight. I came in as a big underdog. I think honestly the judges and everybody there didn’t think I’d last a minute and I came in and dominated him. It wasn’t maybe the way they thought but that’s the truth.”

What do you think about Latifi saying he feels “robbed” by the UFC 247 judges?
