Waterson

Michelle Waterson will no longer be competing at the upcoming UFC 257 pay-per-view event.

That’s according to MMA Fighting who confirmed with multiple sources that Waterson is out of her women’s strawweight fight with Amanda Ribas on January 23. The details as to why are undisclosed as of now.

“Details surrounding Waterson’s withdrawal are not public at this time but the former Invicta FC champion will be unable to compete in January as previously scheduled,” the report stated.

Waterson was looking to build on the momentum of her last outing when she earned a split decision win over Angela Hill in September. That victory ended a two-fight losing skid that saw her get outpointed by Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Carla Esparza.

As for Ribas, the surging Brazilian remains undefeated in the UFC as she is 4-0 with the promotion ever since signing in 2019. Her last outing saw her submit Paige VanZant with an armbar at UFC 251 in July.

There’s no word yet on a replacement opponent for Ribas.

UFC 257 takes place January 23 on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island and will be headlined by the return of Conor McGregor as he meets Dustin Poirier in a rematch in the main event.

Artem Lobov is expecting history to repeat itself at UFC 257.

Lobov, Conor McGregor’s longtime training partner and close friend, is making his return to the MMA world on December 12 after a stint in bare-knuckle boxing. He went 2-1 in BKFC, picking up a pair of wins over Jason Knight and Paulie Malignaggi before being stopped by Knight in a rematch. He recently sat down with our very own Jordan Ellis to discuss a number of subjects, from his upcoming fight at Arena Fight Championship 2 in France to a potential boxing match between McGregor and Jake Paul. Also talked about was, of course, McGregor’s upcoming rematch on January 23.

“I see it going the same way,” Lobov said. “People always say Poirier is a different fighter. I think he’s the same fighter. He was a great fighter back then. He was a top-five featherweight, he was destroying guys, stopping guys left, right and center. If he had won that fight against Conor, he was going to be fighting for the title next, most likely… He was a beast then, Conor just beat him, and he went back to being a beast again. I just feel that Conor’s style is just too much for Poirier, and I feel it’s going to go exactly the same way as it went the first time.”

Though Lobov may be confident in his teammate pulling out the victory, it’s not because of the amount of time he’s personally spent preparing him for the fight. In fact, Lobov said that despite both of them being in camps for upcoming fights, gathering restrictions have limited the amount of time they’ve spent training together.

“We’re in camp at the same time, but we haven’t really had a chance to train together much this time around because of corona,” Lobov said. “Obviously travel has been difficult and you have to quarantine for two weeks anytime you left Ireland and were coming back. So that made it just unfeasible, and as a result we really didn’t get a chance to train together much. But I know Conor is in great shape. The team is out there, John (Kavanagh) is there as well, they have a great team out there. He’s going to be ready come January.”

UFC 257 still doesn’t have an official home as of yet, but Lobov said he is sure to be there to cheer on his teammate as long as travel restrictions allow it. You can bet McGregor is sure to be cheering his friend on for his fight next Saturday.

Lobov’s MMA comeback sees him face off against top French prospect Ylies Djiroun. The 28-year-old suffered a pair of tough, split-decision losses during the PFL’s 2019 season, but bounced back with a win in his last fight, which took place last December. This will be Lobov’s first MMA fight since October 2018, when Michael Johnson handed him his third straight loss to end his UFC career. Overall, he went 2-5 in the organization with wins over Chris Avila and Teruto Ishihara. His contract with AFC is only for this one fight, leaving open the possibilities of him resigning with the organization or returning to bare-knuckle boxing afterwards.

Do you agree with Artem Lobov that McGregor pick up another win over Poirier?

Khabib Has ‘No Interest’ In Rematches With Poirier Or McGregor

KhabibIn a stern refusal from current undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov – the undefeated Russian has doubled-down on his claims that he has “no interest” in scoring a rematch with upcoming UFC 257 features, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, or ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor. In a stern refusal from current undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov – the undefeated Russian has doubled-down on his claims that he has “no interest” in scoring a rematch with upcoming UFC 257 features, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, or ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

With speculation continuing to mount regarding Khabib’s immediate fighting future, the undefeated sambo-specialist has questioned why he would consider making a retirement u-turn, following his somewhat surprising decision to hang up his gloves following the main event of UFC 254 in late October.

The 31-year-old grappler, who had lost his father and renowned sambo coach, Abdulmanap earlier this year as he passed away amid complications stemming from COVID-19, announced his decision to retire with immediate effect following his triangle win over then interim-champion, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje — citing a promise he made to his mother that he wouldn’t feature in the Octagon again without his father by his side.

Since his retirement in October, UFC president, Dana White, who initially stated that the mixed martial arts community as a whole was lucky to even see Khabib compete on ‘Fight Island’ given his recent circumstances, has claimed he will meet with Khabib in the not too distant future, to discuss his possible fighting future

Remaining adamant that he’ll follow through with his decision to stop fighting, Khabib has detailed how he plans on continuing his academic studies, as well as tending to his own personal farm and livestock – questioning why exactly he’d return to the sport if not for only a fight purse.

Speaking at a recent press conference following his purchase of an MMA promotion, called Eagle Fighting Championship, Khabib voiced his lack of interest in possibly re-running title pairings with either Poirier or arch-rival, McGregor.

First, he (Dana White) will probably offer money,Khabib told Russian reporter, Igor Lazorin when asked about White’s possible offer. “What for? I choked both (McGregor and Poirier). Why should I do this?

When asked further about how the promotion may look to force the issue on a rematch with McGregor given the monetary success of their UFC 229 matchup back in October of 2018, Khabib explained how financial gain hasn’t ever really been a determining factor in his career.

Yes, only money,” Khabib. “There is no sports interest there. I choked both of them, both were champions, both surrendered to me. As our proverb says: a horse doesn’t run until the donkey wins. Donkeys don’t even take part in competitions where horses run. I have no interest in fighting against these opponents. Imagine the UFC offered you $100 million. This is already a problem. But there is no sports interest there.

While Khabib’s immediate future remains unknown, the lightweight division is set to continue rolling, with former interim champion, Tony Ferguson and surging grappler, Charles Oliveira slated to meet in just ten day’s time at UFC 256 – as well as the important 155-pound rematch between Poirier and McGregor on January 23 at UFC 257 — set to land on ‘Fight Island’.

Fight Island

The UFC will be returning to Fight Island next month.

That’s according to BJ Penn who reported Tuesday that the January 16 Fight Night event as well as the UFC 257 pay-per-view event would take place in Abu Dhabi.

Recent fight contracts have been said to have Fight Island as the location. However, it is unclear if the January 30 event would also take place on Fight Island.

The January 16 event will be headlined by a mouth-watering featherweight clash between former champion Max Holloway and rising contender Calvin Kattar. UFC 257, of course, is headlined by the return of Conor McGregor as he meets Dustin Poirier in a rematch that will take place in the lightweight division this time.

The news isn’t completely a surprise.

Fight Island was previously mentioned by Dana White as a likely location for UFC 257 and it appears there is now more confirmation of that.

The UFC head honcho also revealed that he would be trying to get fans in attendance in addition to making International Fight Week take place on Fight Island.

“I’m looking to make it International Fight Week. The new Etihad Arena will be open, and that thing was designed with us in mind. Concerts, pool parties, all kinds of cool stuff. And, yes, I hope to bring fans back. … That’s what I’m shooting for.

“… It would be good to have fans. And the thing is, from ‘Fight Island’ we can get fans all over the world there. It’s an easy destination to get to, a fun destination to go to, and we can just (expletive) blow the doors off this thing.

“I’m ready for some fights with fans. I’m ready to go to a live concert. I’m ready to have some parties. I’m gonna go to all this sh*t. I want to mingle with the fans again. I want the fans back. We’ve figured this whole thing out up to now. We’ll figure out how to do do this safely and pull this thing off in Abu Dhabi.”

It’s looking more and more likely that there will be fans in attendance for McGregor’s return at the very least.

What do you make of the UFC returning to Fight Island for January?

Bas Rutten: Dustin Poirier’s Best Chance Against Conor McGregor Is On The Ground

McGregor Poirier

Former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten believes the ground is the avenue for success for Dustin Poirier against Conor McGregor.

Poirier meets McGregor in a lightweight bout that will headline the upcoming UFC 257 pay-per-view event taking place January 23 in Fight Island.

Although it is simply business for Poirier, he will undoubtedly be looking to get revenge after the Irishman comfortably dispatched of him via first-round knockout in their 2014 featherweight meeting.

And while Poirier has improved tenfold since, the same can be said for McGregor according to Rutten.

“The Diamond, he grew a lot, he’s a completely different fighter. But then again, Conor did that as well,” Rutten told Submission Radio. “He’s got his great hands. Can he stop the takedowns? Because now everybody knows, well, let’s see, he lost four times, four times by way of submission.

“OK, so your best bet is to get him on the ground, that’s what you need to do. But that’s easier said than done, of course, because Conor’s distance is so good. Again, if I was him, I would immediately start at southpaw and start with low kicks, low kicks. If you can neutralize that front leg, because it’s going to be very hard for him to check because he can’t turn his hip in.”

For Rutten, it’s imperative that Poirier — who has less pressure this time — doesn’t keep the fight standing against McGregor due to the latter’s striking prowess.

Ultimately, that, along with plenty of emotion, was what led to his demise six years ago.

“I think Conor has the bigger pressure, because it’s Conor,” Rutten explained. “He always will fight that, because everyone, they gravitate towards him. And Dustin, because of the first time he lost, of course he wants to win. But if he can just see this as a regular fight, whatever. Last time also it was like the big long left hook, it kind of hit the back of the head. It was a legal shot because he turned, it wasn’t Conor’s mistake that he did that.

“But now he knows, don’t be in that position, stay at distance. But then again, stay at distance with McGregor, he knows exactly how to use his reach. He’s really good with that. But I think there’s less pressure for Poirier, that I do believe. And I also think Poirier also knows that he needs to have this fight on the ground as fast as he can.”

Do you agree with Rutten? Or do you believe Poirier is capable of getting a knockout on the feet?

Dustin Poirier Expecting ‘Different’ Fight, Wants To Outsmart Conor McGregor

Poirier McGregor

Dustin Poirier is expecting a completely different fight when he faces Conor McGregor in January.

The lightweight rematch between the pair was made official on Monday as it will headline the UFC 257 pay-per-view taking place January 23.

For Poirier, it’s a chance to not only cement himself as the best lightweight in the world — given Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s alleged retirement — but also earn revenge following his first-round TKO loss to McGregor in their featherweight bout back in 2014.

However, it’s simply business for Poirier this time around as he won’t be fighting with emotion like their previous outing.

“He was obviously a great fighter in finishing a bunch of guys before me in his UFC career, but at this point we’re both so much more established and have so much more experience, just more mature fighters, and I think you get a completely different fight here,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “I was emotional in the first one. I wanted to hurt the guy. This time I just want to outsmart him, just want to beat him. This is business. This isn’t any ill will towards the guy.

“When I was younger, I used to fight with a lot of emotion. This isn’t the same thing for me. This isn’t about getting even for me. This isn’t like a revenge type of thing for me. This is about moving my career forward, about putting my family in a better spot. It’s not trying to get back a guy who got me. This is just business.”

McGregor hasn’t competed since January and has only fought a total of two times in the last two years. Poirier, meanwhile, has fought five times since the start of 2018 and has also won five of his last six outings.

And despite the Irishman’s inactivity, Poirier is not underestimating him or any any facet of his game — including the ground game.

“We have to get in there and find out how it aligns,” Poirier said. “Watching footage and stuff like that, I can tell you the guy has one of the best counter-twos in the game. No doubt about it. His timing, his balance, his understanding of distance when guys are being too heavy on their front foot and throwing power shots. He’s a great counter puncher. He really is. I give him credit for that.

“I’m sure he’s always evolving and working to get better. I think people, because he’s been submitted, he’s such a big puncher, people underestimate his ground game. I think his jiu-jitsu and his grappling is better than people give him credit for. I really do. I’m not underestimating this guy in any aspect of mixed martial arts. I’m expecting him to come out as a mixed martial artist, not a boxer, not a one-puncher. He’s coming to fight, and so am I.”

Hopefully, it is the same case with McGregor. Otherwise, it might end up being Poirier that gets to box Manny Pacquiao in the future.

“He might be (overlooking me), and that would be a huge mistake,” Poirier added. “That would be a huge mistake. I might be fighting Pacquiao.”

What do you think of Poirier’s comments?
