Inaugural UFC and Invicta FC strawweight champion, Carla Esparza mints herself as the new undisputed strawweight champion, defeating Rose Namajunas with a split decision victory, albeit, in one of the most forgettable fights in the history of the organization.

Co-headlining UFC 274, Namajunas, who had previously suffered a submission loss to Esparza in the inaugural strawweight title fight in December 2014, failed to land really anything significant over the course of five entire rounds against Esparza — who managed to force the champion to fight from the outside, and at least force some activity as she engaged in takedown attempts on multiple occasions.

During her time in between rounds, amid the ongoing boos and jeers, Namajunas was urged to continue with her cautious approach by her partner and corner person, Pat Barry — who explained that his student was doing everything right, resulting in the slew of boos from the Footprint Center attendees.

Managing to become a two-time undisputed strawweight champion, Team Oyama staple, Carla Esparza explained that she could only press and force as much action as possible given the lack of activity and counters to work with from Namajunas.

Recording one of the most spectacular knockouts in the history of the UFC tonight — one-time title challenger, Michael Chandler has snapped his two-fight losing run with a shocking front kick knockout win over former interim titleholder, Tony Ferguson on the main card of UFC 274 tonight in Phoenix, Arizona.

Michael Chandler, who had suffered a pair of losses to both Charles Oliveira, and Justin Gaethje entering tonight’s clash with Ferguson — and got off to a less than ideal fight in the process, suffering a knockdown courtesy of a massive sweeping left hook, and ate a series of other shots before managing to relieve some pressure with a double-leg takedown.

Slicing Ferguson with some heavy ground strikes before the close of the frame, within 20 seconds of the second round, Chandler had recorded one of the most devastating knockout wins in recent Octagon memory — springing with a brutal front kick as Ferguson looked to enter an exchange, dropping the Onxard native unconscious.

Following the victory, Chandler called for either a lightweight title rematch against Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje, as well as cutting a promo and welcoming a welterweight fight against former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor.

Former LFA flyweight champion, Brandon Royval has solidified his status as an elite contender at the flyweight limit — stopping Matt Schnell with his first ninth career submission victory courtesy of an opening round guillotine win on the preliminary card of UFC 274.

Royval, who entered tonight’s clash with Schnell ranked as the #6 flyweight under the banner of the organization, having landed prior victories over Tim Elliot, Kai Kara-France, and Rogerio Bontorin — the most recent of which in January.

Surviving an early first round knock down against an aggressive Schnell, Royval was almost himself submitted with a guillotine choke after numerous scrambles, before escaping, and catching Schnell with a front choke of his own, immediately jumping to his back, and forcing a quickfire tap.

Donald Cerrone has been forced to withdraw from UFC 274 after being struck down with a non-COVID illness just hours before the event.

Cerrone’s bout with Joe Lauzon has subsequently been pulled from the card. The welterweight clash between Randy Brown and Khaos Williams will now feature as the main card opener.

The news was announced during the UFC 274 early prelims, with color commentator Joe Rogan revealing that Cerrone had likely succumbed to food poisoning.

“They think what mind have happened is Donald ate something bad,” Rogan said (h/t MMA FIGHTING). “Because he was throwing up, he couldn’t keep food down. He felt terrible. They tried to give him time to recover but I talked to Dr. [Jeff] Davidson and it was just not going to happen.”

Had Cerrone fought tonight, it would have been his first Octagon appearance since May last year, when he was defeated by Alex Morono via TKO. The 39-year-old hasn’t had his hand raised in six fights, and in fighting Lauzon, Cerrone would have had a good chance of rebounding from what is the biggest slump of his career.

At this time, there’s no word of whether Cerrone’s bout with Lauzon will be rebooked.

What’s your reaction to Donald Cerrone’s last-minute withdrawal from UFC 274?

Back-to-back stunning first round knockout victories for Portuguese striker, Andre Fialho — who stops Cameron VanCamp in the opening round of his early preliminary card matchup at UFC 274 — stopping the promotional newcomer with a massive one-punch knockout win in Phoenix, Arizona.

Fialho, a former UAE Warriors champion, debuted in the promotion against compatriot, Michel Pereira on short notice at UFC 270, suffering a unanimous decision loss over the course of three rounds.

Making a quickfire Octagon turnaround tonight, Fialho had landed his first promotional victory courtesy of a Performance of the Night bonus winning stoppage against prospect, Miguel Baeza.

UFC 274

Donald Cerrone is out of his scheduled bout with Joe Lauzon after contracting a non-covid-related illness.

Cerrone was set to feature in the opening fight of UFC 274’s main card. However, during the broadcast, Jon Anik announced that Cerrone would not be able to compete due to illness. Anik noted that it is likely food poisoning, due to something ‘Cowboy’ consumed after weigh-ins.

This will come as extremely disappointing news to many, with both Cerrone and Lauzon holding huge fan appeal on account of their extensive careers inside the UFC.

UFC 274 Bout Rearrangement

With Cerrone vs. Lauzon no longer an option, the UFC needs a new fight to open up the PPV main card. Thankfully, an electric welterweight matchup between Randy Brown and Khaos Williams was in place on the prelims. This fight has now been moved up to replace Cerrone vs. Lauzon, and whilst they may not have quite the same name value, the matchup is just as exciting stylistically.
