Charles Oliveira’s head coach, Chute Boxe trainer, Diego Lima has said that a “messed up” is to blame for his student’s lightweight championship limit weight miss ahead of his scheduled title fight with Justin Gaethje tomorrow at UFC 274

Charles Oliveira, who headlines tomorrow’s Phoenix, Arizona card – was scheduled to defend his lightweight championship against former interim titleholder, Gaethje, however, the Brazilian missed the lightweight title limit after an additional hour of time to cut weight, tipping the scales at 155.5lbs.

The Sao Paulo native has since been officially stripped of the undisputed lightweight crown as a result of the weight mishap, with Gaethje now the only competitor between the two who is eligible to win lightweight gold in the main event of UFC 274.

UFC have confirmed Charles Oliveira has been officially stripped of the undisputed lightweight title

UFC has since released an official statement regarding Oliveira’s weight miss, detailing how the Brazilian will fight for a vacant title should he defeat Gaethje tomorrow night in the ‘Copper State’.

“Charles Oliveira missed weight for his UFC 274 main event bout against Justin Gaethje on Friday afternoon in Phoenix, weighing in at 155.5 pounds,” The official statement read. “Due to the weight miss, Charles Oliveira will forfeit a percentage of his purse. As of this moment, Charles Oliveira remains the UFC lightweight champion, but upon the start of the main event headliner tomorrow night he will vacate the 155-pound title.”

“The fight will proceed as scheduled, but the championship will only be on the line for Gaethje. If Oliveira wins, he will be the number one contender for the vacant lightweight championship and will fight the next challenger for the undisputed title belt at a time and place to be determined.”

Ariane Carnelossi, a compatriot of Oliveira claimed following the Sao Paulo native’s weight miss, that the hotel scale which had been used by fighters the night before weigh-ins, had been reset and decalibrated overnight, with a UFC official alleged to have reached out with the intention of informing teams that the scale reading was not the same as previously read due to the reset. Multiple fighters and teams alleged that the misreading of the scale varied from half a pound to two full pounds.

Addressing his student’s weight miss, Lima explained how Oliveira had gone to sleep last night on championship weight, after checking on the scale the organization had provided, before waking and checking once again, only to find he was off weight.

“We went to sleep on weight, we checked the weight on the scale the organization leaves for us downstairs and everything was ok,” Diego Lima said during an interview with Brazilian outlet, Combate. When we checked it in the morning (his weight) was off. We even posted last night that he had mad weight because that’s what really happened. You’re witnesses of this, Charles has never missed weight since he moved up to 155. Even when there was no belt (on the line), he was under the limit, he didn’t use the pound allowance.”

“If I keep saying it, people will think it’s an excuse, but that’s the truth,” Diego Lima said. “We even posted last night he made weight well. He made weight and went to bed.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Conor McGregor Questions How Many Bridges Tony Ferguson ‘Must Burn’ Amid Tirade Against UFC

Tony Ferguson

Former two-weight UFC titleholder, Conor McGregor has taken umbrage with former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson’s recent tirade aimed at the promotion and its president, Dana White – comparing the head honcho and other promotional officials to “drug dealers”.

Tony Ferguson, a former interim lightweight gold holder, is slated to return for the first time in a year this weekend on the main card of UFC 274 in Phoenix, Arizona – drawing fellow division contender, Michael Chandler in a high-profile matchup.

In his most recent outing back in May of last year, Oxnard veteran, Ferguson featured in the co-main event of UFC 262 against Beneil Dariush – suffering a third consecutive loss in a one-sided unanimous decision defeat.

The loss followed a prior unanimous decision loss to current lightweight kingpin, Charles Oliveira, and an eventual fifth round knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in an interim title fight.

However, during his media availability earlier this week, Ferguson alluded to some “retaliation tactics” imposed by the promotion since his last fight with Dariush – resulting in his lengthy layoff from the Octagon.

Responding to Ferguson’s comments regarding the UFC and the above mentioned, White, McGregor, who was previously represented alongside Ferguson at Paradigm Sports Management, before the latter cut ties, claimed that maybe Ferguson was the issue, and not the organization.

“Tony Ferguson, who changes representation around 4 times a year, is saying it’s someone else (sic) fault he is in the position he is in,” Conor McGregor tweeted in a now-deleted post. “How many bridges do you burn before you look yourself in the mirror and say “maybe it’s me that’s the issue”. God bless you pal, I’ll say a prayer.”

Tony Ferguson also called for the UFC to implement a health insurance policy

At last night’s press conference, Ferguson also called for the UFC to implement a health insurance policy for fighters contractually tied to the organization.

“I’d say, let’s get some insurance for these fighters,” Tony Ferguson said during the UFC 274 press conference. “Let’s raise the tier up. You know what I mean – when they (the UFC) did the Reebok deal, they had tiers, so how many fights you had inside the Octagon, I say we do the same thing, man. We all have families, we all have to support our systems – let’s do that sh*t, man. I don’t know, Dana’s (White) not here but – insurance… I’m a grown-ass man, I’ve got to look after my family, so insurance is cool for me.”

UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas has named her top three back attackers in the UFC.

Namajunas knows a thing or two about jiu-jitsu, being one of the top jiu-jitsu specialists in women’s mixed martial arts (MMA). Recently, Namajunas joined Morning Kombat to preview her upcoming title defense against Carla Esparza.

During the conversation, Namajunas was asked about who she thinks has the best back attacks in the UFC right now.

“I mean, shoot, Aljamain Sterling recently,” Namajunas. “He’s so masterful with it. When he gets you there it’s just so hard to get out. I was gonna say, yeah, obviously Demian Maia.

“He’s — I would say probably the best out of everybody in the whole UFC. Charles Oliveira is really great as well. He has some of the coolest submissions in the UFC. So those are probably the top three.”

Namajunas certainly has some nasty back attacks herself, and she’s hoping to show them off against Esparza. The pair will lock horns with the 115-pound title on the line at UFC 274 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on May 7.

“Thug” comes off her first successful title defense over Weili Zhang since topping Zhang for the title initially back in April of 2021. Namajunas looks to make it four straight wins with a potential victory over Esparza.

Esparza actually beat Namajunas back in 2014 for the inaugural UFC women’s strawweight title. She’s currently on a five-fight win streak and looking to reclaim the title once again with a big win over Namajunas.

What do you think of Rose Namajunas and her picks for top back attackers in the UFC? And who are you picking in Namajunas vs. Esparza II? Sound off in the comments section below!
