UFC 274 takes place Saturday, May 7, 2022, from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The main event will feature Charles Oliveira defending his lightweight championship against Justin Gaethje.
The co-main event will spotlight a strawweight rematch between champion “Thug” Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza over seven years in the making.
And of course, who can forget an El Cucuy sighting? Tony Ferguson will try to snap his three-fight skid when he takes on “Iron” Michael Chandler prior to the two title fights. Buckle up, because this is one fight that could very easily steal the show.
Also on the card will be two pairs of legends squaring off when Donald Cerrone takes on Joe Lauzon to kick off the main card followed by a rematch between Ovince Saint Preux and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. You never know how many more times you’ll get to see these legends compete, which makes both contests a must-see.

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler is hoping that two results go his way on the UFC 274 main card this weekend. While a pair of title fights will head Saturday’s pay-per-view slate in Phoenix, Arizona, one blockbuster collision of entertaining veterans is threatening to steal the show. Setting the table for Rose Namajunas and Charles…
But despite being another setback away from a three-fight losing skid and a 1-3 record in the UFC, Chandler believes he’s as close as one victory away from another shot at staking his claim on the lightweight throne.
Chandler: Who’s Not Gonna Wanna See Me Go 5 Rounds With Gaethje?
During a UFC 274 media day interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Chandler discussed what he’s expecting for his future should he dispatch Ferguson inside the Footprint Center this weekend.
Despite the lengthy winning streaks amassed by top fives Beneil Dariush and Islam Makhachev, whose likely fight later this year is seen by many as a title eliminator, the former three-time Bellator champ believes there isn’t a single fan who would argue against him challenging the victor of Saturday’s main event, especially if ‘and new’ is read out.
“I do think there’s gonna be a very large, explosive fight for me this fall, this winter. Whether it’s Conor (McGregor), whether it’s for the title,” claimed Chandler. “There’s not an MMA fan on the planet who watches ESPN MMA that doesn’t want to see me fight Charles Oliveira again or Justin Gaethje again, especially Justin Gaethje. In a five-round title fight, are you kidding me? Everybody wants to see that.
“This sport is all left up to time and circumstance. It would be the right time for me again, obviously,” added Chandler. “And the circumstances would be right, people wanna see me rematch those guys.”
With that in mind, as well as his own success, Chandler is rooting for the most recent of his former opponents to have his hand raised this weekend. If all goes to plan, “Iron” is expecting to boast number one contender status by next week.
“My money’s on Justin Gaethje, which, one again, solidifies me as the number one contender to fight him next by the end of the year,” concluded Chandler.
Following his tirade against the UFC’s practises, and promotional president, Dana White earlier this week during his media availability, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson called for the promotion to implement health insurance for the fighters on the organization’s roster – with those requests echoed by fellow former interim lightweight titleholder, Justin Gaethje.
Tonight’s press conference in the ‘Copper State’ ahead of this weekend’s UFC 274 card at the Footprint Center was manned by UFC play-by-play commentary leader, Jon Anik, who explained how the aforenoted, White would be present in Phoenix, Arizona later in the week.
Fielding questions from assembled media at the press event, defending lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira – who headlines the card against Gaethje, questioned if critics of his had actually consumed his recent rallying wins against both Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler – as he continues to receive questions about his heart and will to traverse adversity.
With attention switched to main card features, Tony Ferguson, and the aforenoted, Chandler, the two shared a joke regarding reigning welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman’s attempt to emulate Ferguson for his former Sanford MMA teammate, Chandler – with both jokingly agreeing that the Auchi native left a lot to be desired with his imanari roll setups.
Speaking of both Gaethje and defending undisputed best, Oliveira, Tony Ferguson – who attempts to snap a three-fight losing skid against Chandler, insisted that future re-runs with the challenger and champion most definitely interest him in the future.
When asked if he would echo prior calls for an increase in post-fight bonus amounts akin to his calls ahead of UFC 262 last May, Tony Ferguson, instead explained how he would rather the UFC implemented a health insurance policy for fighters, explaining how he needed to think of the long term financial stability of his family.
“I’d say, let’s get some insurance for these fighters,” Tony Ferguson said during the UFC 274 press conference. “Let’s raise the tier up. You know what I mean – when they (the UFC) did the Reebok deal, they had tiers, so how many fights you had inside the Octagon, I say we do the same thing, man. We all have families, we all have to support our systems – let’s do that sh*t, man. I don’t know, Dana’s (White) not here but – insurance.”
Momentarily, Gaethje insisted that he liked the idea of another increase to the fighter bonus system for UFC 274, before taking sides with Ferguson and calling for the introduction of health insurance.
“I want bigger bonuses, bigger bonuses,” Justin Gaethje interjected. “And health insurance – but bigger bonuses.”
Replying to the Arizona fan-favorite, Ferguson said, “I’m a grown-ass man, I’ve got to look after my family, so insurance is cool for me.”
Challenging for strawweight spoils in Saturday’s co-headliner, Carla Esparza – who attempts to land a second career win over now-champion, Rose Namajunas, claimed that she would defeat the 2014 version of herself, who had just landed the inaugural UFC strawweight crown – adding to prior Invicta FC success.
Earlier this week, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier claimed that he would probably face the victor of the high-profile main card clash between Chandler and Ferguson next, however, when drawn for an answer on his interest in fighting the Louisianan next, Chandler remained coy on the matchup, averting his full attention to this weekend’s bout with Ferguson instead.

Joe Lauzon has ruled out talks of retirement after his upcoming encounter with Donald Cerrone at UFC 274.
Having last fought in October 2019, Lauzon has remained semi-retired from competition since his last active year in 2017. ‘J-Lau’ did not officially move on, with one fight in the following two years each, and stated that he would not return unless there was something that strongly interested him.
Three years departed from his last outing against Jonathan Pearce, an offer to fight Donald Cerrone ultimately convinced Lauzon to come back to action. Both Cerrone and Lauzon are veterans of the sport and have amassed a combined 33 fight-night bonuses in their time with the UFC.
Speaking to media ahead of his bout this weekend, Joe Lauzon talked about his relationship with Donald Cerrone. “We’re friendly,” Lauzon said. “But we’re going to try to murder each other Saturday night.” (h/t MMA Junkie).
Joe Lauzon is open to more fights
Coming out of his break to compete against Cerrone, members of the community speculated about what the future looks like for Lauzon. It seemed like this might be his last fight. However, the 37-year-old American fighter is open to more fights in the future if he believes them to be worth the efforts.
“I have to like the opponent, I have to like the date, and I have to like the location,” Lauzon said. “If this is the last fight, cool. If this is not the last fight, cool. But just keep sending me names.”
Lauzon last fought in 2019 to stop Pearce in the first round via a TKO. While Cerrone has been the more active fighter, he hasn’t won a bout since 2019 and goes into UFC 274 with high stakes. This could be the last time fans get to witness both men in action as they continue through the later part of their careers.
Do you think this is the last fight for Joe Lauzon & Donald Cerrone?

Cerrone, a one-time lightweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, potentially fights for his future with the organization this weekend in the ‘Copper State’ – attempting to snap a run of six fights without a victory.
The Colorado native most recently featured at the welterweight limit against Alex Morono in May of last year at UFC Vegas 26, suffering an opening round knockout loss.
Donald Cerrone’s most recent win came against Al Iaquinta In May 2019
Returning to the lightweight division for the first time since a September 2019 headliner against event main event feature, Justin Gaethje against Lauzon this weekend, Cerrone let out his emotions during his media availability this week ahead of UFC 274, discussing the importance of his son during his fight camp; a key point of inspiration to the veteran
“It’s not me, it’s my son,” Donald Cerrone told assembled media as he fought back tears. “I can’t wait to walk out of that tunnel and see the look on his face. I can’t wait. He finally knows what I do. It’s crazy how emotional I get but any time I was working out and I didn’t want to do it, that’s who I thought of. I cannot f*cking wait.”
“I cannot wait to see him smile like, ‘Wow, this is my dad’ so to me that’s why I wanted a sold-out crowd,” Donald Cerrone said. “To walk out of that tunnel, blow the roof off this place and look over and see my son like, ‘Wow, dad, that’s you.”
Cerrone, 39, detailed how his young son now has somewhat of an understanding of his father’s profession, which has now created a dialogue between the two surrounding Cerrone’s fights.
“He’s almost four and he’ll be able to grasp that,” Donald Cerrone said of his son. “He still doesn’t know what I do. Like, ‘You’re going to Vegas to go to work, dad?’ He doesn’t know what that means. He loves Ninja Turtles, he loves fighting, so I can’t wait to ask him, ‘What Ninja Turtle is daddy going to be tonight?’ ‘cause I’m going to go out there and kick some f*cking ass so watch out.”(Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler is aware of the dangers he’ll face when he shares the Octagon with Tony Ferguson at UFC 274.
At this weekend’s pay-per-view, set to go down from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Chandler will make his fourth UFC walk. Despite holding a negative 1-2 record on MMA’s biggest stage, not many fighters have faced the level of competition and thrilled audiences like he has in just three appearances.
Having narrowly fallen short of title glory against Charles Oliveira last May and suffered defeat in a Fight of the Year war with Justin Gaethje six months later, the former Bellator champion is looking to keep in touch with the elite contenders at 155 pounds in his fourth straight PPV outing.
To do so, he’ll have to have his hand raised this Saturday at the expense of fan favorite Ferguson. Pre-fight, Chandler has given an honest assessment of what it’s like preparing to face “El Cucuy.”
To put it simply, it’s a “scary” prospect.
Chandler: Nobody Can Emulate Ferguson
During UFC 274 media day on Wednesday, Chandler was asked whether any name on his impressive and lengthy MMA résumé boasts similar attributes or styles as the current #7-ranked lightweight contender.
Given Ferguson’s unique offense, it’s perhaps no surprise that the answer was “no.”
Pointing to Ferguson’s unrelenting conditioning and durability, Chandler branded a date with “El Cucuy” as one to fear. Nevertheless, the 36-year-old is certainly not one to back down from a fight.
“No, I really don’t (have anyone on my record like Ferguson),” admitted Chandler. “Obviously, everybody’s got two arms and two legs, and we’re talking about boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and grappling, and so, of course, there’s similarities here and there. But I think, when you add in the wrinkle that Tony Ferguson doesn’t get tired, he doesn’t get finished, he keeps on coming — that’s a scary fight.
“He’s got elbows that’ll cut you up, he throws them from everywhere. He keeps fighting off of his back when he does get taken down. I can’t think of anyone that can emulate Tony Ferguson, because nobody can,” added Chandler. “He’s a puzzle to solve, and we’re gonna try and solve it Saturday night.”
One entertaining veteran of the sport will be leaving the arena on a three-fight losing skid and a sizeable distance away from contention. But whatever the result, fans will certainly be expecting an entertaining affair when “Iron” and “El Cucuy” throw down Saturday night.
Who do you think will return to lightweight contention at UFC 274, Michael Chandler or Tony Ferguson?
