Julianna Peña claims Amanda Nunes rematch was closer than people give her credit for UFC

Despite suffering a unanimous decision loss to former two-weight UFC champion, Amanda Nunes back in July of last year in the pair’s championship rematch, former bantamweight titleholder, Julianna Peña has claimed that her unsuccessful re-run wasn’t particularly one-sided as its made out to be.

Peña, the current number one ranked bantamweight contender and former undisputed division champion, has been sidelined since headlining UFC 277 back in July of last year, suffering a unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44- 50-43) loss to the former two-division gold holder.

Julianna Peña claims Amanda Nunes took the easy way out with retirement

Suffering multiple knockdowns and lacerations in her title defense rematch with Nunes, Peña, who recently went on a tirade against the Brazilian following her retirement from mixed martial arts back in June, claimed their rematch last year wasn’t as one-sided as it appeared.

“I’ll always want to fight her (Amanda Nunes) if she decides to return, absolutely,” Julianna Peña told ESPN during a recent interview. “There’s fights that are on my bucket list of things that I want to get back, things that I want to do, and she’s absolutely one of them. I definitely think she knows that because all they’re looking at is probably highlights.”

“What I would encourage fans to do is go back and watch that fight and actually take into account, without the commentary or anything, just watch the fight,” Julianna Peña explained. “You’ll see that it was a lot closer than people want to give me credit for. They see the drops, they see me getting knocked down and yeah, it absolutely happened. But I let her take the time to go make those adjustments and revamp her entire style. I felt like it was kind of a snub for her to not let me have the same opportunity.”

Julianna Peña calls for trilogy UFC title fight with Amanda Nunes: ‘I’m getting my belt back’

Yet to book her Octagon return since dropping her undisputed UFC bantamweight crown to current two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes in the pair’s title rematch back in July, Julianna Peña insists a trilogy rubber match between the duo should be next – as he eyes another title coronation.

Headlining UFC 277 against Bahia favorite, Nunes back in July, Peña suffered a rather one-sided championship loss against the Brazilian in the pair’s rematch

Suffering a unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) defeat to Nunes, in December of last year, Peña turned in one of the most shocking upset wins in the history of professional mixed martial arts, submitting Nunes with a stunning second round rear-naked choke.

Entering the pair’s first tangle as a sizeable underdog, Peña managed to survive a grappling-heavy opening round against Nunes to eventually wear on the Brazilian in the second with a slew of strikes, before taking the latter down, and locking in a rear-naked choke – sans hooks, securing a submission win.

It appears to be a trilogy title fight or bust for Julianna Peña

Yet to return to the Octagon since suffering her one-sided title defense loss to Nunes, Julianna Peña insists she only wants to compete in a trilogy rubber match with the Brazilian next, maintaining she will reclaim the bantamweight crown.

“Everyone keeps asking me what’s next…. I’m getting my belt back that’s what’s next!” Julianna Peña posted on her official Instagram. “A trilogy with @amanda_leoa (Amanda Nunes) is the fight to make. I did everything I said I was going to do going into that first fight. I gave Amanda the immediate rematch within six months and man, maybe I should have sat out for two years like she does?”

“She told all y’all she could have finished me in RD2 (round two) but I guess she wanted to get her face rearranged for three more rounds and leave on (emoji) instead (emoji) she even said we head-butted and you guys believed it. Never happened! She had to go home and change and revamp her ENTIRE STYLE to beat me. I take it as a compliment,” Julianna Peña continued. “She outsmarted me the second time I give her that. We are 1-1 and this time I will not miss! @ufc this #trilogy needs to happen LFG!”

With the UFC set to return to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in January of next year for a UFC 283 event at the Jeunesse Arena, speculation has been rife regarding an Octagon return for undisputed bantamweight and featherweight queen, Nunes, however, at the time of publication the Brazilian has yet to be matched.

Seth Fuller has hit back at Joe Rogan for criticizing his scoring at UFC 277.

MMA judge Fuller faced heat from Rogan, who was on commentary duties alongside former UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier, for his work at the promotion’s latest pay-per-view event. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the state athletic commission that he works for, forbids officials from speaking about their scoring publicly.

Although Fuller acknowledges that he’s prohibited from discussing the matter, he defended his scorecard amidst criticism from the community.

Joe Rogan & Daniel Cormier criticized Seth Fuller’s scoring at UFC 277

During the heavyweight prelim contest between Hamdy Abdelwahab and Don’Tale Mayes, Fuller was bashed for scoring the fight 29-28 for Mayes, whereas judges Kent Basinger and Dan Mathisen scored the bout 29-28 for Abdelwahab, who came out on top by split decision.

Fuller did not realize the controversy until after the show was over and he received a text message from an unknown number.

“Are you even watching the fights f*cktard?” the message read (ht MMA Junkie). “No one in the world had Mayes except you. Sad when even the commentators are clowning your terrible ability to do your job.”

As for the commentary team, Rogan and Cormier had some harsh words for Fuller upon hearing the decision.

“I mean, come on,” Cormier said on the broadcast. “… Somebody gave Don’Tale the third round, Joe.”

Rogan responded, “That guy needs a talking to. We need to check and see what he bet on.”

Fuller hits back at Rogan

In the response video, Fuller defended his actions and hit back at Rogan.

“I figure I’ve judged about 80 cards and several hundred fights themselves,” Fuller said. “I’ve judged and reffed, because I do both. Now again, is that experience enough? I don’t know in what profession 10 years of doing something is not considered seasoned. … This ‘regional’ judge Steve Armstrong, here he is at UFC 5 cornering Guy Mezger – UFC 5.

“He’d been doing it since before this. How much more seasoned do you need to be? The other judges, Ken Basinger, Dan Mathison, Aaron Menard have also been doing it over a decade. These are seasoned judges. For them to talk about it again, every time a judge makes a score they don’t like, they have to insult them.”

He stated that he holds no ill will toward Rogan, but felt the need to vindicate himself from the public.

“The commission (might go), ‘Hey, this is why we shouldn’t have put this guy on the main UFC. This is why we shouldn’t have put Steve Armstrong in the main UFC. This is why we shouldn’t have put these local judges on the main UFC card.’ To me, that’s a bunch of BS,” Fuller said. “To me, if I’m doing it wrong, then cite me for doing it wrong.

“But if you’re pretending that I’m not experienced, or I was careless, or I didn’t think or concentrate or didn’t do my absolute best and that I don’t care about these fighters and don’t care if the result is the correct result, according to the rules that they agreed to, then you are crazy. You’re just plain wrong. It’s not OK.

Valentina Shevchenko

Despite her continued dominant reign atop the flyweight division, undisputed champion, Valentina Shevchenko has been knocked from her number one rank in the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings – with former opponent and newly minted, duel-weight champion, Amanda Nunes returning to the summit.

Valentina Shevchenko lodged her seventh straight title defense back in June

Valentina Shevchenko, who co-headlined UFC 275 back in June, managed to successful rack up her seventh successful defense of the flyweight throne, defeated Brazilian challenger, Taila Santos in a hard-fought, split decision earning effort in Singapore.

The Kyrgyzstan technician had managed to leap to the number one rank in the official pound-for-pound rankings off the back of the aforenoted, Nunes’ bantamweight title loss to Julianna Peña back in December of last year.

However, post-UFC 277 over the course of the weekend, and with the release of the updated rankings, Bahia standout, Nunes has managed to reclaim the number one rank in the official list – after she turned in a hugely one-sided win over bantamweight champion, Peña in the pair’s rematch, reclaiming her spot as the bantamweight pacesetter in the pair’s rematch.

Recovering from December submission loss woes to the Washington native, Nunes, who was credited with three separate knockdowns and a further six separate takedowns against Peña in their American Airlines Center headliner, scored a unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) re-run win.

Off the back of her title win as Nunes added the bantamweight crown back to a cabinet which already contains the undisputed featherweight strap, the Brazilian was almost immediately linked with a trilogy bout with her flyweight champion counterpart, Shevchenko.

Twice defeating Shevchenko during their Octagon tenures, Nunes managed to first land a unanimous decision win over the flyweight queen back in March 2016, however, narrowly retained her title at UFC 215 courtesy of a highly-contested split decision win in Alberta, Canada.

Valentina Shevchenko moved to the flyweight ranks following her second defeat to Nunes. And has since embarked on a perfect run of nine consecutive wins.
