After months of lobbying for a fight, Nate Diaz has finally been given a date for his final walk to the UFC Octagon.
On September 10th, the Stockton native will compete in the final fight of his contract when he faces fast-rising welterweight star Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279. The two will be the featured bout of the evening, competing in a five-round non-title main event. Following the contest, Nate Diaz will become a free agent for the first time in 15 years.
The Ultimate Fighter alumni showed a strong interest in exploring free agency following the completion of his UFC contract. Despite a recent skid that has seen him dropping three of his last four and fighting on a fairly limited basis with long stretches of inactivity in between bouts, Diaz remains one of the most popular and polarizing names in combat sports. As a result, everyone seems interested in getting into the Nate Diaz business, including former YouTube star turned professional boxer, Jake Paul.
Paul has lobbied for a showdown with Diaz in the squared circle, but according to UFC president Dana White, that may not be in the cards.
“I don’t know [if Diaz will fight Paul],” White told Yahoo Sports. “He said, ‘I would never do that.’ That’s what he said to me. He said, ‘That s***’s goofy.’ I don’t know. That’s what he said to me.”
Where Will Nate Diaz Land Following His UFC 279 Main Event?
With so many possibilities, it’s hard to say where Nate Diaz will land following his exit from the UFC in September. It’s clear Diaz is not interested in being tied down to any one organization. Luckily for Diaz, most promotions outside of the UFC have allowed their contracted fighters to pursue other interests. Bellator could be a potential landing spot, but the promotion has started to outgrow the practice of signing every UFC fighter whose contract expires.
Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship would make a lot of sense and one that the promotion is open to according to BKFC president David Feldman. While speaking to MMA Junkie Radio, Feldman expressed an interest in being in the “Nate Diaz business” pending the outcome of his UFC 279 bout with Chimaev.
“The one thing I always want to worry about is that these fighters should still be fighting and not saying he definitely should be fighting. But after a tough fight like that, does he want to continue fighting? Is his heart in it? Is his body still in it, and is he ready to do it? If those answers are yes, 100 percent we would be in the Nate Diaz business, a hundred percent.”
As for the possibility of Nate Diaz squaring off with Jake Paul in the squared circle, never say never. Sure, Diaz may have downplayed the possibility when speaking to his current boss, but given the amount of money that could be generated from a Paul vs. Diaz main evented pay-per-view, the Stockton star could change his tune.
UFC alum, Dan Hardy has heavily criticized the promotion for their booking of a scrutinized September main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz – claiming the promotion are setting up an “assassination attempt” as the latter plans his exit from the UFC. Hardy, who is expected to return to combat sports in November in […]
Hardy, who is expected to return to combat sports in November in the form of a boxing match with fellow UFC alum and sport veteran, Diego Sanchez, claimed that the organization’s decision to book a fight between the unbeaten berserker, Chimaev, and veteran contender, Diaz as an almost criminal offence.
“It feels like we’re getting to the point where someone should start thinking about pressing charges,” Dan Hardy told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “It doesn’t feel like a fair fight. It feels like a very, very cruel thing to do to someone that is a legitimate legend. Because they’ve spoke out against the organization, they’re going to get executed live on TV. That’s kind of how it feels, and it makes me feel uncomfortable to think that’s the way it’s going to go down.”
Dan Hardy claims a “horrendous” battering is likely in store for Nate Diaz at UFC 279
As far as Hardy is concerned, a moral victory against Chimaev for Diaz, albeit against the odds, is surviving a brutal, one-sided beating – or a quickfire trashing.
“I hope, desperately hope, that Nate at least comes through it alright, but after watching what Khamzat did to Rhys McKee, and to John Philips – yes, of course, Nate’s got good Jiu-Jitsu, but there comes a point where Jiu-Jitsu is nullified by good wrestling,” Dan Hardy explained. “It happened in the early days of the UFC, and it would happen against Nate if it hits the floor. I think he gets nullified and I think he gets beaten up horrendously from the top position. I think it’s going to be uncomfortable to watch. And I think it’s going to leave the UFC in a very, very bad light.”
“I just hope Nate comes through it alright, because I think he’s got good opportunities outside the UFC,” Dan Hardy continued. “It’s just a shame that they’re (the UFC) going to do this assassination attempt on him before he leaves.”
Without a victory since August 2019, Diaz has found himself on the receiving end of recent, consecutive, rather one-sided beatings at the hands of welterweight contenders, Jorge Masvidal, and Leon Edwards.
As for Chimaev, the brusier has enjoyed a run of five consecutive victories since his UFC debut two years ago – rushing through the quartet of John Philips, Rhy McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, and Li Jingliang – to go with a UFC 273 win over Gilbert Burns.
Khamzat Chimaev insists that he is willing to make a return to the middleweight limit of 185lbs should welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman elect to sit out should he defeat incoming title challenger, Leon Edwards in August. Khamzat Chimaev insists that he is willing to make a return to the middleweight limit of 185lbs should welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman elect to sit out should he defeat incoming title challenger, Leon Edwards in August.
The Chechen bruiser most recently featured at UFC 273 back in April against former welterweight championship chaser, Gilbert Burns, scoring the most high-profile victory of his Octagon tenure to date with a unanimous decision effort.
As for Diaz, the Stockton fan-favorite will complete his contractual obligations when his five round headliner with Chimaev concludes on September 10. – as the veteran plans his exit from the promotion to boot.
Khamzat Chimaev appears willing to accommodate the welterweight champion post-UFC 279
#3 ranked welterweight contender, Chimaev has, however, opened the door to a middleweight division return should he defeat Diaz, and Usman defeats Edwards – amid consistent rumblings of clashes with both Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira.
“After (Nate) Diaz, maybe I’m gonna go up (to middleweight),” Khamzat Chimaev told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “If (Kamaru) Usman wanna wait a long time, maybe I’m gonna go up to ‘84 (sic) and fight somebody there – because I wanna take both belts.”
Expected to likely challenge for welterweight gold with a victory over Diaz in two months’ time, Chimaev, as mentioned earlier, has been continually linked with a middleweight outing against either champion, Adesanya, or fellow berserker – Pereira – who themselves are expected to meet in a middleweight title offing before the conclusion of 2022.
During his promotional-perfect tenure, Chimaev has landed a quintet of John Philips, Rhys McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, Li Jingliang, and the aforenoted, Burns.
Ahead of his high-profile Octagon return at UFC 279 in September, surging welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has claimed that he and Nate Diaz will determine who is the real “gangster” between the duo – as well as insisting that Chechens “eat gangsters for breakfast”. Chimaev, a native of Chechnya, looks to add the veteran one-time […]
Ahead of his high-profile Octagon return at UFC 279 in September, surging welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has claimed that he and Nate Diaz will determine who is the real “gangster” between the duo – as well as insisting that Chechens “eat gangsters for breakfast”.
Chimaev, a native of Chechnya, looks to add the veteran one-time lightweight title challenger, Diaz to a run of five prior UFC victories, most recently defeating welterweight title chaser, Gilbert Burns earlier this year.
Featuring in another high-profile slot at UFC 273 earlier this annum, Chimaev was forced the distance for the first time in his Octagon tenure, as he defeated Brazilian contender, Burns over the course of three rounds in a unanimous decision effort.
Linked to both an immediate title tangle against champion, Kamaru Usman, and a title-eliminator against Colby Covington, reports confirmed last week that Chimaev would headline UFC 279 on September 10. against Diaz – with the latter completing his contractual obligations with the promotion at the event, ahead of an expected period of leave.
Khamzat Chimaev plots a definite finish over Nate Diaz ahead of UFC 279
Claiming that he will be preparing a “funeral” for Diaz ahead of their T-Mobile Arena headlining clash in September, Chimaev today claimed that he would “eat” self-proclaimed “West Coast gangster” Diaz for breakfast at UFC 279.
“I’m happy he’s (Nate Diaz) fighting with me, you know,” Khamzat Chimaev told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “He’s one of the legends, he’s one of the – everyone speaks (of him) like ‘Gangster, gangster.’”
“Now, I’m gonna show who’s the real gangster,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “I told before, we from Chechnya, we grow up on the war. And we eat gangsters for breakfast, you know.”
Riding a run of five consecutive wins into his September return, Chimaev, who will headline his first promotional event at UFC 279 – holds prior wins against John Philips, Rhys McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, recent feature, Li Jingliang, as well as the aforenoted, Burns.
